I use to work at Gamestop back in the day, i had so much fun working there back in the day .I agree Rich those warranties were awesome.. You break it and you had it go right back to the store and get a new one no questions asked. But now to see what Gamestop has become is just awful. I only step foot into a store if im out and they are in the area, when i go in it just makes me sad.

@SilverSurfer-mg6ti the problem in all that is that you're assuming there was intent to damage it. People accidentally damage their own stuff without realizing what they're doing is causing damage. Not everyone knows about consoles needing to vent air properly, and just keep it in an enclosed tv stand. Warranties do absolutely cover damage done by the owner, unless that damage is done intentionally. It's been reaffirmed in many many lawsuits that the only way someone can be disqualified from a warranty (at least in the US) is if they can prove the owner was doing something they knew would damage it, which anyone knows would be next to impossible to prove in court anyways.

@SilverSurfer-mg6ti then the store can just not offer a warranty? A lot of stores don't offer them, that's why Gamestop's was popular. Stores like Walmart offer very expensive and very limited warranties, that do indeed cover accidental damage from the user; I would know I worked for them for over a decade... It quite literally even says in their extended warranties that accidental damage is covered, but has a very short window (something like 6 months). Why they would willingly do that you ask? Because accidents rarely occur, and most electronics can be refurbished and resold. Walmart for instance takes broken tvs and ships them off to be refurbished and resold on their website. I'm sorry but who are you exactly to say what stores should and shouldn't have to do? Or this idea you seem to have where warranties are somehow this universal thing. Just because you know how to take care of something properly doesn't mean everyone else does or should. All that matters is that the terms of the warranty are clear. Court cases here in the US have been pretty clear on stating that if they are going to have a clause to void the warranty due intentional user damage, they have to prove the user intentionally damaged it. There's no such thing as a clause for damage caused by user, because if that were the case broken hinges on laptops would never be covered, since them opening and closing the laptop caused the hinges to fail. Your logic just doesn't pan out in the real world.

Well most countries if you peel that off you do void it. In the US that doesn't void the warranty. You can't assume every country will have the same exact warranty rule.

Bought the spider man game. Had the glitch where I couldn’t download it to the hard drive. Bought it digitally from Sony and returned the same day with the receipt. GameStop would not refund my purchase but said they would give me another copy of the game. I said I didn’t need it since I got the game digitally. I offered to take store credit. They said no. Here’s another defective game or nothing. Told them I will never shop at any GameStop again. I hope they go out of business.

Shop at best buy? No thanks. Took away my elite plus status half-way through the year after I spent over $3,500 to earn it. I no longer get points to redeem on certificates. Games aren't even on the store floor anymore. While gamestop is struggling I rather shop there than going to a place that sells bluray players but starting next year won't sell me anything to watch on it.

None of these game stores ever give you anything for your trade in stuff nor do they have any good prices on the games they sell. They basically buy your stuff for cheap and then sell it based on what it's worth online. I'm tired of getting ripped off. Even other stores do this, not just GameStop.

I always buy new games on disc/cartridge, beat it, and then I sell it on eBay for 95% of the retail price. Saves so much money, and my Internet is fast so I don't mind having to download all the game data once I put the disc in.

I'm glad you mentioned this because the other day, I went to trade in games for store credit and was told for $2 more you can renew your membership. I said yes, and then when i got home, my receipt said that it was $25.00. I went to complain about this by calling the store, they gave me another number to call, then that other number told me to go to the store, then the store told me to call the number. So this back and forth pissed me off. (Also on top of that, there was a $5 deposit made for a pre order of a game that i did not want.) 2 Errors. I only wanted my receipt to say "Hogwarts Legacy for $44.99" + $2 Renewal Membership. And that didnt happened. I filled a complain, and contacted other agencies to look into it. Also, will not be doing business with GameStop ever again. I am at a point in my life that i will buy all Digital, that way I wont go trade in games that i dont want anymore. There is an upside to Digital Only, no need to have the idea of Selling the Games if its all Digital. No more going to GameStop.

The cost is always $15 before, $25 now….it’s never been $2… they misled you sort of, but you assumed they meant the renewal was only $2.00 which is false and not what they said. When they say that, I means “oh we will use your $23.00 credit toward the $25.00 renewal fee, so it only costs you $2.00” They didn’t fully explain it but you assumed something totally wrong it sounds like.

(Keep in mind that when I got home, I saw my receipt saying $78 store credit was traded in to purchase $44.99 Hogwarts Legacy PS4, $5 Pre Order Deposit for Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy, GameStop Renewal $0.00, and Digital Game Informer $25.00. In no way did I want to pre order/Deposit anything for the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy, and In no way did I want a Game Stop pro membership for $25 because I was told "For $2 more we can renew your membership." She never told me $25, or the grand total of my full transaction with was $78.70. This was a sales tactic scam with word play mixed with adding a $5 Deposit for a game I in no way wanted. When I went the 2nd time to confront her about it, I told her to her face "I will take accountability if you told me $25 for the membership, but you said for $2 more" she got triggered, went to the back, came back with a binder and gave me the same number the store gave me the other day. Regardless, no more GameStop for me. I only went to trade in store credit for a game that was on sale

I have unfortunately worked at Gamestop for 10 years now (off and on) and I can say with certainty as an employee and other employees that havent disagreed with me *WE DONT WANT THIS*. We struggle to tell our guests this policy change. I hate it, and I don't understand how Gamestop can actually get away with this given that they were saved by the actual community surrounding trades/stocks. I am at an impasse. I will do what I can without getting fired to all my wonderful guests that actually want to come in. God bless them.

It’s the fact that I’ve known some chill people that worked at GameStop, like, besides a few that are just there for the money and nothing else, when you get that interaction with an employee who is just as passionate about the games and systems as you, it makes you want to keep going back, but then corporate messes it all up by making them more of a corporate puppet, it has definitely ruined some of my experiences, cause the ones that were insufferable and just annoying to interact with, they are now more incentivized to be more pushy and more aggressive with the promotions. Ugh, that’s what I hate most, the corporate culture around gaming, and how it just distorts everything that we love about it.

Last time I went to GS, I asked for whatever game I wanted as new. Rep goes into the drawer and I see them pull out the bare disc. I stated I was looking for it as a new, sealed copy. They said it was new. I say, I want a ‘new, unopened copy.’ After they said it was new, I said forget it and walked away. Haven’t been to GS since. They like to scam ppl with buying the same game from a person for $2. Then sell the used copy as new for $60. As much as we do need physical media and its retail ecosystem to exist; we definitely do not need a parasite like GameStop to ruin its future. But they are doing it. No wonder Reggie left the board.

I don’t need you to gaslight me to accept that they go out of their way to open every sealed copy of a game to sell as new, or possibly selling a used copy as new and trying to charge me full price. How am I suppose to know if it’s really new once the seal is broken? The whole concept of sealing the items is to assure the buyer is getting an item that has not been used or tampered with. No matter if it’s a game, or a bar of soap. I can’t believe I have to explain such a basic concept of packaging, but here we are. So I ended up going down the road to Walmart and bought the same game SEALED. GS could have easily just made place holder display cases to put on the shelves to advertise a game being available to buy.

I noticed this, figured the cases on the shelf were for promotional display; and ask the associate for a new copy. He said to take a case off the shelf, I figured it was for inventory purposes or whatever. But when he was in a drawer pulling out the bare disc did I realize what was happening. He was determined to gaslight me that the item I was requesting as new, unsealed was new. If I’m being charged full MSRP of a product that is pre-sealed at the manufacturer; then the business should not be unsealing and removing the product from the packaging without providing a discount or a disclaimer stating the item has been tampered with. There is no logical reason to open even 1 copy for display purposes to then charge full price. I worked retail long ago and even then store floor models were discounted if it was the last one in inventory with no plan to replenish. GS, has a very poor business model in terms of building brand loyalty and longevity with customers. Even with digital being the future of gaming, they could find other ways to attract and build brand recognition. Instead they wanna abuse and milk gamers. It seems corp is only in it to serve themselves till they jump ship. At the end all it’s doing is leaving a bad taste in ppl’s mouths to avoid the store. That will ruin the company, not digital distribution.

There’s a GameStop next to the American Deli I get wings from. For years I would always pop in every now and then while I wait. I used to have a payday routine where I would go buy a game I preordered and pick up the wings on my way home. It’s kind of heartbreaking to think about now. I used to look forward to chatting with the employees while I waited for my food. Now I just get my wings and initiate the game downloads from my phone app. I don’t even go in the GameStop anymore.

I used to be a GS Manager many years ago and even then they were cheap on hours. They milked their salaried employees. The pre-ordering was complete BS. If we had lets 80 pre-orders for Halo 3 ( see how I'm old) and we received 100 copies, what I would do is put aside 20 for walk ins and hold the 80 pre-orders. Now I know that not all 80 people will show up that day. What GS wanted us to do was sell through all of it, pre-order or not. That is pretty messed up if you ask me. I also hated having to open a brand new sealed game and place the box on the shelf. Then if that was our last copy I have to give the speech about how " I know it's opened but it's new...blah blah blah".

I’ve been collecting old 360 games and my local GameStop was getting games and a recent scam the ones in California is they always charge you for the warranty. So a game that is 99 cents on there website was trying to be up sold 7 dollars. And they refused to give me a warranty and said they’d deny me a refund if It didn’t work and I returned it. 😂😂

Gamestop (and EB Games before the acquisition) was where I went back in the PS2 days. Now there was already a lot of shenanigans going on, but it was (mostly) a fun place to shop. The last time I set foot in one of their stores was to buy the very last PS2 games that they were selling at discount to get rid of stock. Haven't gone back since. Steam and GOG for PC games and just about any other store for Xbox and Playstation stuff. Gamestop just fell way too out-of-touch in my opinion. Also, they literally got saved by the stock stonk less than three years ago and what did they do with that miraculous reprieve? Among other stupidities, they went whole-hog into NFTs, losing practically everything they'd gained. I guess that's a sort-of consolation for the hedge fund b-turds that got denied back in 2020-21. What a friggin' waste of an opportunity. I feel sorry for the rank-and-file at Gamestops, but I just can't care about them as a company.

Yeah.... I remember Gamestop used to have tons of customers some 5 to 10 years ago. Then it kind of went bonkers, and the Danish gamestop were detatched from the US or something. I can not really remember what happened. They still had tons of customers, and one day they closed up shop. Even with tons of customers. I never really found out why. Tons of sale, tons of customers and then they closed down. I had this conversation with my daughter today, ans she does not understand as well. The only reason must have been CEO paycheck gone through the roof, sucking the company dry. People freaking lost their jobs.

The local GameStop I have, as always with these stories, seems to be the absolute top dog in all of these horror stories. It's fairly busy and has a good rep, very low turnaround rate for employees as I see the same people in there day in day out no matter what time of day. But yeah...I don't care to defend it as the exception to the rule anymore. Mine is just lucky, that's all there is to it.

The GBC i got used at The Exchange had actual dirt in the cart slot. ACTUAL DIRT. Got 4 games with it, only two of them worked even after cleaning. The handheld by itself cost 100 bucks. I'm gonna save it though. I'm gonna soup it up and pimp it out. It's gonna have all the fixings. Backlit screen, rechargeable battery, extra volume, bigger screen, better buttons, THE WORKS!

I had bought a Wii U from a GameStop and upon getting home to set up the pre owned system, I found that the Gamepad screen was broken. I called the GameStop that had sold it to me and they blamed the broken screen on me even though it was in the box the entire time. I don't go to GameStop anymore unless absolutely necessary. They are not good business anymore.

Even if you still want physical media, Walmart and Amazon usually have new games for cheaper than Gamestop. For used games marketplaces like Ebay have a far bigger selection and is typically cheaper. So there is absolutely no reason to step foot in a Gamestop anymore.

In regards to the 4:52 time mark, Dear Rich: 95% of physical discs on Playstation 4 and 5 *HAVE THE ENTIRE PLAYABLE GAME ON THE DAMN DISC!!!!!* and yes, they are playable WITHOUT the damn patches / updates since they don't have anything game breaking on them. FOR EXAMPLE: Demon's Souls remake on Playstation 5. I played and COMPLETED the entire game during the week I had NO internet at my house. The physical disc played perfectly and the PRE-patched version was BETTER since I could do the Blue Blood sword COIN trick during my 2nd playthrough of the game (something that was patched out in later updates). That's just one example of many. Yes, there are games like the modern Call of Duty games where almost nothing is on those discs and games like Cyberpunk 2077 where the Pre-patched version is unplayable due to the huge amount of extreme game breaking glitches, but the VAST MAJORITY of disc games on Playstation 4 and 5 are entirely on their disc and are completely playable without problems.

How cheap is digital only download games in the States? because here in the UK they far more expensive than physical discs/cartridges. I find myself often still buying more physical games on Amazon than digital downloads from any of my console’s online stores

I stopped going once I noticed the game selection started to get terrible. Like as a system progresses, the selection gets bigger. There's more games. But all the ones around me started making the actual sections smaller and smaller. The switch has so many games with all the indie titles that even just with the physical ones, you my local retro game store has an entire wall floor to almost ceiling just for the switch. The selection is MASSIVE. But 90% of what GS stocks is just used games. Which in a way is fine. I usually get used anyways. Or I did when used was cheaper. But if that's mostly what they have, then its only going to be what people bring in, which isn't as much as if they also stocked new games, so it's easier for me to find the game I'm looking for elsewhere. Because the majority of the time they don't have what I want.

Well I’m hearing Best Buy will be closing all physical media products, as in no more games, and movies to buy. Walmart has shrunken their movies and series section as well as CD’s music section. So if two popular stores go down with physical media, I am starting to see complete digital marketing sales. I can only see GameStop survive if they were to fix like what was said and buy & sell retro games and consoles besides modern games and consoles “at” the stores.

When you buy a physical game at GameStop, they automatically charge on the warranty. The customer has to request to remove it, which is shady business.

i remember when gamestop left finland despite there being almost no big competitors sure they were selling stuff that had nothing to do with gaming but it was one of the best places to find games and the deals on used games were really good at times i was a epic level customer

They had that great deal going a few weeks ago and out of the 8 new games I bought only 1 was sealed. I went in to buy armored core 6 the day it came out also and they tried to sell me a copy that wasn't sealed THE DAY IT CAME OUT!

Rich, I don't know why you keep perpetuating the myth that games do not come on discs and it's just a placeholder - it isn't always true. Most if not all PS4/5 games come with 100 percent of the game data on the disc. Updates are only encouraged and not a requirement. There is actually third party websites you can download updates from now for PlayStation which can be installed via USB stick and not the PSN. As for Xbox Games you are correct. As for Switch games you are also correct - most big titles for that thing do not come fully on the card because publishers are stingy and the proprietary card format is too expensive vs pressing a plastic disc. That's why third party games for switch are a rip off because you pay the expensive price for the card and then you have to do a download anyway so you might as well have bought digital from the off with switch.

The company has some very shady practices. I ordered a bunch of new sealed games from them online recently and every single one was already open with clearly damaged boxes and stickers galore all over them. I returned them all at the store and the guy gave me a hard time because they were already open. I said that is why i am here, he was defending their crappy policy of what they deem "new". I went to another store and thry accepted my return because it was not what I ordered. What a debacle it was. The fact an employee tried telling me i was in the wrong was just over the top. Screw that dude and the entire company. It should be illegal to advertise new games and then mail you opened damaged games with a sticker slapped on saying "new". What a racket. Last time i attempt to give gamestop a chance. They can burn in a lake of fire.

Last time I sold games to GameStop was 2011, it was like 9 games ranging from PS1-PS3 i got $120 store credit towards a brand new PSP3001, which wasn't bad at all. I saw what they were buying used game a few years later & everything changed. I won't even buy used items there..

They were never warranties in the first place. They are replacement plans. This policy has always existed, it's just now being enforced. I worked for them for 15 years in the past and this was always the standard until they brought enough new people in where the policy was just ignored and no one said anything.

4:48 rich please try installing your phisical games without internet so you can see with your own eyes that the disc do have the game data on them and that you don't need to download anything to play them, because the disc do infact contain the entire game data on them, Except for updates and dlc contents which are optional but you have the base game/entire data on the disc minus updates and dlc whichi have mentioned previously.
