I remember a couple of weeks before I got my own Switch in June. I asked if I could preorder a Switch cause of course they didnt have one at the time. It's not inevitable, they're simply silly lol. Portugal had Worten's biggest shops in a similar case as Gamestop and now they're profiting a lot more every day since they changed a few years ago . What did they change? Added a space to read books (even what they're selling and for free; no complains), another to drink a coffee with a friend, show complete anime films on a big HD TV that they're selling in a proper space (yes, you can watch full stuff there for free) and they even let small indie bands play a few songs once in a while. The space changed from a sell-only shop to a friendly multi-space that also sells. Profit never was so positive as it's now according to them.

As much as I agree that Gamestop definitely didn't do what people were wanting and you're mostly right AlphaOmegaSin, there is one point I would make from personal knowledge on the subject... The reason why Gamestop has probably done this in the way they have is because the amount of profit on a new game is tiny, in some cases as low as $10-$15 on new games which means that they can't really offer the discount on new games. Why can Amazon offer the discount on new games? They get preferential prices that are lower than what Gamestop can buy it for. So their solution was to offer discount instead on something that there is a hell of a lot more profit on - used games.

This is without taking into account the fact that you're going to quickly see Best Buy AND Amazon do away with the 20% off deal entirely. Best Buy and Amazon are LOSING money on every new game they sell under those programs. Your suggestion for GameStop to IMPROVE revenue is to LOSE money. Best Buy, Amazon, and Wal-Mart COMBINED don't make as much revenue as GameStop does when it comes to video game software, hardware, and digital sales. These companies aren't "chipping" away at GameStop's market share -- the digital space is. Amazon and Best Buy are utilizing video games as a form of loss leaders to TRY and make a dent into GameStop's marketshare, but GameStop still retains over 70% of the actual market. AMZ and BBY do this because they can make up that loss revenue with their other avenues of merchandising -- but it's proving to be inefficient, which is why you've seen Amazon take the steps and change the way their Prime service works in regards to VG software. Working for a GameStop competitor in the pre-owned market (and our individual store is located directly down a hill from a GameStop)... I can tell you, they're not winning the pre-owned market either. In our town, there's regularly nobody in the GS parking lot, save for the days when a huge release is out. Our lot is usually at least halfway full and we have several regulars. It seems that they're more geared towards merchandise than games nowadays. It's sad really, especially when you're old enough to think back on how they used to be.

Interestingly here in Switzerland we have an entirely different rewards system, in which you get xp for the Stuff you buy and when you reach the next level you get some benefits like 10% more for used games you sell them

A company called Game in the UK where I live have introduced an similar thing for their points system too, which is also called Elite. It's £36 for a year, gives 10% in points on all physical game purchases, merchandise and accessories (2% for none Elite members), 2% in trade-ins and digital purchases (1% for none Elite members) and 4% Points back on all consoles, PC, VR, phones and tablet purchases. If you don't spend enough to get £36 worth of points back in the year then they give you the difference back in points. Pretty rubbish really. Since you mentioned Amazon Prime in this video I thought I'd go through what it give you in my country. When it comes to buying things from Amazon, in the UK all it gives you (to the best of my knowledge as I have only used Amazon Prime for a few months then didn't bother with it anymore) is £2 off (which is like 5% at the most depending on the game) some games (only new games and then it's only a select few of them) and free next day delivery on products bought directly from Amazon or sellers affiliated with Amazon. You also get access to Amazon Video. That's it. for £80 a year it's unbelievably rubbish.

Agreed. I quit Gamestop. I've been doing Gamers Club @ Best Buy for over a year, and I'll tell ya, I saved hundreds already. 20% off *New* games is great, but *Free Shipping* is another $$$ saver. Shipping @ Gamestop & Amazon seems overpriced. Lastly, I was sick of getting things half destroyed at Amazon. Their Pickers/Packers suck (underpaid and don't care). Best Buy gets my vote. Plus, if I ever get a used game from there, it looks NEW, not like it was a coaster/frisbee.

Alpha I had the same problem with Kiwami. I had pre ordered it on Amazon months in advance. I check on the 29th to track it and see if it's on the way and nope it hasn't even finished preparing for shipment. I cancelled that shit, went to gamestop, and had a discount and I left with Yakuza for like 20 bucks. Steelbook and everything but yet Amazon couldn't have that shit on my doorstep on release? Whatever, I always in store pre order everything. Online pre ordering is fucked, not just with shipping, but I've had special editions be cancelled on me at the last second because they couldn't fulfill the quanity.

Over a decade ago a manager got fired at my local Gamestop for giving an unauthorized deal to customers. If you paid 3 dollars extra on used games, you'd basically get all your money back upon trading them in. So you were practically only paying 3 dollars for used games.

GameStop keeps failing in its own market because the GS executives are trapped in an outdated business mindset of fear. They're afraid that offering discounts on new items will cause them to lose too much money. So they don't offer those new discounts, and they lose large amounts of customers to businesses that are willing to take those sort of risks (Amazon). This is a cycle that will continue until GS gets some balls, or goes out of business (and honestly, I don't think many people would care if it just went under).

This makes me glad that I live near a place called Cybertron games. Awesome place. Great library of games both modern and retro and prices that are almost comparable to most online deals. Reasonably fair trade-in values because they actually are aware of how much they could lose to competition by not offering good deals. And a "regular customer" offer of spending $15 or more each time you go eight times (which is extremely easy due to the library of games they have) giving you a $20 voucher for anything in the store. I'm sure there are some things that are better overall but I will go there a million and one times before I ever step foot in a fucking Gamestop.

Without really going off what alphaomega has said, my opinions regarding gamestop are based on my own personal experiences as well as those of some of my associates when it comes to gamestop. But that doesn’t really matter in regards to deals on games (as I don’t do trades, regardless of the deal, just because what I buy I like to keep) since price-checking games at gamestop, cybertron (the place I mentioned), and various online outlets typically leaves the online ones to be better priced. Most of the time. My main issue with gamestop is more the horrendous customer service/stupid bullshit I’ve had to deal with from them. But all that being said, I am sure not all are like that.

It's good if you buy a lot of used games that have just come out, like spending $40 to $50 on a game that is relatively new and then selling it back to gamestop. However, if you don't spend that much on used games or if you just don't buy that many used game, then the Elite is not really for you, since you have to spend a certain amount before you start making your money back.Some people could benefit and others won't have to have it.

Currently in the beta myself, I have a feeling the reason it's only 15% in the beta is because they also toss in the $10 coupon every month, and that usually stacks with other offers. Pretty much the only reason the beta was worth it though since it's still only 15% vs 20%

Honestly I wish Gamestop would get their shit together. They have some of the chillest employees and I've never had a problem with them when it comes to preorders. Unlike Best Buy or Amazon who sell my preorder or send me a standard copy when I preorder a special edition. Might be willing to give Best Buy another chance though... From a math point of view, the worse case scenario with the pro membership is you break even with the magazine subscription (which is about $20), everything else is just gravy. Taking the subscription price out of the elite you still have to make back $40 bucks to break even. The extra 5 (or 10) percent difference on what is being offered means you would have to do a combination of of buying stuff from them or returning for credit/cash of used items to them to the total sum between $400 to $800 (depedning on the percentage) just to break even on the deal. If you're a big buyer of used games, this mnight be for you. If you can get in on special promos, this might help you out. Otherwise, this is just a bad idea. As for me, I'll stick with the Pro. I do enjoy reading the magazine.

BestBuy also learned real quick to lower the cost of GCU. When they changed it to the way it works now (I think it was about 4 years ago) It cost $120 for 2 years, shortly after was dropped to $60 and occasionally went on sale for $30, and now it's just $30. $30 for 2 years. Literally buy 3 games at $60 and you made your money back. It blows my mind how gamestop is still open.

honestly if i could fix this it would be to change the 20% to a 15% bonus preowned, add 10% off new games (and maybe accessories?) with bonus points if you preorder a product, and make the price of admission for this at most 40, because 60 is way too damn much to ask for when games and system online services cost the same amount.

The reason GameStop can't match it is because places like Best Buy and Amazon don't depend on game sales to keep their company afloat which is why Best Buy can afford to give you a two-year Gamer's Club membership with great benefits for $30. Amazon is a multi-billion dollar company. What you get with Prime as far as games are concerned is only one of the many benefits Prime gets you across Amazon's endless merchandise. GameStop on the other hand only really makes money off of their used games which is why half of their storefronts these days are filled with silly t-shirts, backpacks, and POP! dolls. This is also why Their Elite Pro membership is lacking. They still need to make money... But anyway, I agree with how silly this new idea is and how overpriced it is for so little.

I went to gamestop a few weeks ago for the first time, hoping to get some decent deals on used games. But the prices of the game I was looking at , used, were the same prices amazon had the games new. It's ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't last much longer. You even get better trade in deals on amazon.

The original power-up rewards program was $14.99 and the new elite program is $29.99. They are adding the program for those who shop there regularly and who want it. Depending on how often you shop or trade there the additional bonus can be worthwhile. It's never a bad thing to offer programs that can benefit the customer. If you don't buy or trade often, the elite may not be for you. That being said there are two more programs to choose from if you want.
