SMB3 is a worthy #1, but I think my favorites are still Mega Man 2 and River City Ransom.

Finally, Dragon Warrior IV got the recognition it deserves. So, anyone unfamiliar with this game, imagine playing only straight-forward titles and Pokemon, then playing this game. When you thought you would end the game, another chapter was thrown at you, each with a different character, and a different feel . After 4 of these, all these characters characters join forces with.. YOU! the player, or to be more precise, the character you created. Now it's you journey to save the world. This made the game, much much more personal. Despite being old, grindy, and somewhat cliched story, the charm of this game is unparalleled. You know what other game charming yet under appreciated? Final Fantasy IX! While this game may not be for average gamer, this is a must play for RPG and JRPG aficionados.

FF9 is definitely not under appreciated. Many people list it as their favorite FF, and still has the highest metacritic score of all mainline FFs.

Not going to lie, I got choked up and teary-eyed at the LoZ one. "There's a reason why Zelda games take forever to make - Nintendo has been trying to catch up to the original for 30 years." Legend of Zelda - specifically, Ocarina of Time - holds a special place in my heart that no other game will fill and it has shaped me into the person I am today. Hearing the music that starts at 5:57 still gets me, man.

I remember when Mario 3 came out, our family spent the entire day trading off, playing it two player clear to the end. We were blown away by the graphics and the sheer variety crammed into that cartridge.

Castlevania 3 was in the 11-20 video they did before this. But I also loved The Guardian Legend. That game was quite a bit more obscure than these games, however, and had a steep learning curve, so I don't think it did as well as it should have. Shadowgate was good storytelling, but kinda short-ish.

Great list, but I would have followed the one per franchise rule to be able to squeeze in Chip 'n' Dale and Gradius/Lifeforce Salamander - both awesome co-op games that I played with my friends again and again and again

This made me stop and think what my favorite games are from the NES, I came up with 35, I really don't play much of any others on the system. There are some I've never played that I really should go back and play so maybe one day I'll get to them. My top 35 are: 1 - Metroid (Got this for Christmas 87 and played it for 15 hours straight, love it) 2 - The Legend of Zelda 3 - Final Fantasy 4 - Dragon Warrior II 5 - Castlevania 6 - Contra 7 - Dragon Warrior III 8 - Dragon Warrior IV 9 - Dragon Warrior 10- Zelda II 11- Faxanadu 12- Ninja Gaiden 13- Shadowgate 14- The Guardian Legend 15- SM2 16- Castlevania II 17- Blaster Master 18- Rygar 19- Punch-Out 20- Castlevania III 21- Ninja Gaiden II 22- Ninja Gaiden III 23- Ghosts'N Goblins 24- Karnov 25- Excitebike 26- R.C. Pro Am 27- Tetris 28- Dr Mario 29- Wrecking Crew 30- Ice Climber 31- Gunsmoke 32- Tecmo Bowl 33- Double Dribble 34- Rolling Thunder 35- R.B.I. Baseball I could never get into any of the Mega Man games and I like Mario 1 & 3 but don't love them. I to this day don't get the love for the Duck Tales game, don't see why people love that one so much.

Lovin' the love for Mega Man! Great list, especially as Super Mario 3 reigns supreme. I remember the list of most popular NES games in ol' Nintendo Power. SMB3 held that spot for most of that mags existence! Personally, I think I might swap Mega Man 2 and the Legend of Zelda. Zelda was a mind-blowing game and a great adventure, but it hasn't aged nearly as well as MM2 and it was so obscure; nigh impossible to complete without a strategy guide or friends who had access to a strategy guide.

Totally agree with Castlevania being higher on list vs Castlevania 3 , yes Castlevania 3 was an improvement but they over did it a bit, Original Castlevania was perfect just the right amount of difficulty and length to the game. The original recipe is hard to beat however Castlevania 3 is worthy of a top 20 spot. great review of top 20

Even to this day Super Mario Bros. 3 is like “Come at me bro!” with it’s nearly unmovable Number 1 position for best NES games. Only on occasion has The Legend of Zelda taken that spot on official listings.

I like how when everyone talks about Mega Man 2 they never mention the design flaws with the Wily Castle levels and it's bosses or how you lose your E-Tanks if you get a Game Over. The Robot Master levels are potentially the best in the series, but that's not enough to save it IMO from even more noticeable design flaws than the other NES titles.

The purpose of the E-Tanks is to help newer players get adjusted to the game, taking them away defeats the whole concept. I don't think it brings the game down as a whole, as players do need to learn the mechanics at some point, but I do think it is a notable flaw that stands out compared to the rest of the series. The later stages have a dozen sections that require certain weapons to advance. If you don't know what's ahead that means you have to either farm enemies or commit suicide (and lose your E-Tanks). Wily 4 as a whole and it's puzzle boss it's a perfect example of a newcomer's trap. One of the key aspect of MM as a whole is experimenting with weapons. Players shouldn't be punished because they entered the Boo Beam Trap without max Crash Bombs and some Item 1s. MM3 is okay. Better than 2 IMO, but it's not my favorite of the six NES titles either. lol

Well at least some acknowledges Dragon Warrior. The game is so freaking good. And, it's not because of the nostalgia. I am 15 so nostalgia is a no no but once my mom accidentally bought me a PSP rip-off which played nes games and music and low quality videos. I was so pissed, but I ended up falling in love with the thing as I played the best games of my life in that thing.

Anyone who grew up with a NES would disagree with this list, because there were too many great titles to be partisan over... I could have easily claimed Strider, Blades of Steel, TMNT2, Legacy of the Wizard, as well as the Nintendo Classic titles like Tecmobowl to the list. It even had decent strategy games from KOEI. What's mind boggling is the greater number of never released Famicom games that are still being fan translated like Sweet Home or Earthbound along with modern homebrew games like Guitar Heroes as well as strange esoteric items like arcade perfect Donkey Kong... Even the Chinese rom hacks are more interesting than rom hacks from competing systems with games like Somari. It's a testament that even in the modern age, bootleggers continue to produce famiclones and NES emulator largely drive the Raspberry Pi scene for retrogamers who never grew up with the NES. Competing platforms like Atari, Sega, Hudson, Commodore, Amstrad, Sinclair, would all die out by the 90's, but Nintendo would survive and shape the form of modern consoles like Playstation and Xbox. It really isn't an understatement to say Nintendo revolutionized the gaming landscape.

Mega Man 1 is just as much classic as any of the others on the NES! It's always about Mega Man 2 and 3! "Not a bad game"? While it does contain some unfair moments - Not many. Less than most NES-titles I'd say it's definitely one of my favorites. I'd pick Mega Man 1 over Super Mario Bros 3 anyday. Super Mario Bros 3 might be more technically perfect - Mega Man 1 is more fun!
