Gaming History: Geoff Crammond’s Formula One Grand Prix 1 (F1GP) "Birth of the F1 Simulator Game"

Formula One Grand Prix 1 (F1GP) - To kick off the new season of Formula One Racing let’s take a moment to remember the good old days, when you play a F1 simulator game as an entire team, not just one driver, and you could ram every other car off the road and still not be disqualified. It was also extremely detailed for something made before real 3D graphics were actually a thing.
(Game Description) Formula One Grand Prix (known as World Circuit in the United States) is a racing simulator released in 1992 by MicroProse for the Atari ST, Amiga and PC created by game designer Geoff Crammond. It is often referred to as Grand Prix 1, MicroProse Grand Prix, or just F1GP. Although the game itself was not affiliated officially with the FIA or any Formula One drivers, team liveries and driver helmets were accurate to represent the 1991 season, but the names were fictional. The game is a simulation of Formula One racing at the time and was noted for its 3D graphics and attention to detail, in particular the players ability to edit the teams and drivers and set up their car to their own personal specifications. The game was ranked the 27th best game of all time by Amiga Power.

This game brought me to simracing. This an F1GP2. The first "online" league was with f1gp, where I had to send replay files on floppy disk to an mail address. I needed to send 12 seperate disks with each floppy labeled with my name, track name and the time i did. Then 2-3 weeks later the results were published in an newspaper you had to buy. Then you knew if you won the championship or not.

Played this on 100% and Ace difficulty for a couple years. Best years of my life. The difference between this and otherracing games was so big you could think they were on different platforms

By Christ! The keyboard controls were just amazing. The space bar to change gear the correct way based on whether you were accelerating or not. Also...the superdownforce/super sticky mod :)

This was REAL 3D graphics! The AI was amazing for the processor power , this was the game that gave me arthritis in my right thumb from the gear changes. I probably completed 30-40 seasons on this game at 100% race distance. Cheers for the memories.

Wow! I tried a full season at 100% distance and only got about half way through... And I was trying to paper record lap times, qually times race times etc... Although I did the first race or two multiple times at this distance. Then I think Doom2 and Duke Nukem 3D suddenly seemed more important... As well as 4 A Levels and an hours-per-week piano habit.

We still don’t have cinematic replay mode that changes camera angles automatically depending on what is happening on the circuit. This game had it in 92. Also this game ran at 25fps. Somehow it feels like 60.

I created the UI graphics for this and the St and Amiga versions. That intro is so embarrassing now. However I'm very proud of the rest of it. Ans as others have pointed out, there were no fuel stops in F1 at the time. Regarding the names, MicroProse didn't want to pay the money for the F1 licence. We released a file on one of the game mag free discs with all the right driver and team names. No GPS as it wasn't a thing then, or at least not commonly available. Also no mip-mapping, no anti-aliasing and resolution was 320x240 for PAL and I think 320x200 for NTSC.

They didn't refuel the cars in 1991 the cars did the whole race without refuelling. Its was pretty accurate.

I have all the original games collected, in big box format. Indycar, gp1, gp2, gp3, gp3 2000 Season, gp4 and all the classic NASCAR games too. One of the biggest classic games, still going strong today, is Grand Prix Legends from 1998. Classic.

I remember a strange quirk with the game on the Amiga, in that one of the teams (Leyton House) used the same colour as the sky for it's livery, meaning that during a race in clear dry conditions, the Leyton team's livery would be the correct colour, but if a race was overcast/wet, the livery was grey.

Good eye for detail there!! That's a drawback of having an 'indexed' colour palette. What an amazing piece of software this is, it occupied a massive amount of my early 20s.

I played this game on Amiga 500 back in the day (1992/3!) when I was too young to grasp its complexity. A decade ago I tried it again with the help of DOSBox and I was sucked in. I finished whole season, drove without the assists (if you raise your difficulty you will loose the ability to turn them on anyway, I only left out the suggested gear) I altered car setups for every race just to shave off those few fractions of seconds. And it was a blast. You couldn't change the tire pressure though. At the time only the Indianapolis 500 could compete with it - it had better driving model IMHO, but it lacked in the tracks department.

An old 90s fave of mine. You could improve lap times by turning off damage and slamming into a car at 220 at the end of a straight - instant braking! - and on Monaco a significant shortcut was bouncing round the corners off the walls if you judged it right. I played several full distance races; seem to remember being the only car remaining after the shunt fest!

Although the game didn't have the real driver and team names, the manual has a detailed section at the back which goes through every F1 team and driver in 1991. Very helpful if you want to edit the names. The cars and drivers in the game reflect the real cars and drivers very closely.

Someone did build a patch for fuel. It was part of an Internet league in the late 90s early 2000s. You emailed in a log file confirming your laptimes and this would make up the results of the league. It was awesome. Can’t seem to find the website now unfortunately

I played a lot of GP2 when i was a kid. Also in DOS but it's a big improvement on the 1st version but the basics of the game were the same. The game was incredible en so much fun. And indeed very ahead of it's time. Thanks for the video, it gave me some extra insight and good memories.

I still play this game (and Indycar and NASCAR Racing) from time to time, I guess I like simple 3d graphics. The engine and skidding sounds in this game are horrible though. Also interesting is that according to Wikipedia this game is actively modded.

Played the hell out of this (no assists of course 😅) at the time, me and my friend used to do the pseudo 2player game where you take turns and the ai takes over . Such a fun game

I disagree about the graphics, I think they are beautiful even today, visually everything just works. If you could run it at 60fps it would look even more gorgeous.

It lets you turn off trackside detail in stages to improve frame rate. Amazing game.

@@mechanicalpants My version done away with the intro for art stills. Plus my uncle who had it on an older atari couldn't believe the difference in quality. I only had a 600 but it was pretty sharp compared to some of the footage I see on here.

This game had ai that made realistic mistakes and had rear wing damage (as well as front wing) and an extensive replay system with multiple camera angles. Something that Codemasters are bragging about for the first time in 2021. Let that sink in.

My first full sim and I played it to the extreme back then on the Atari and eventually, like a lot of games, if you play them that much, it did become easy to beat even at the top level. It didn't stop me loving it though. I still have my original copy of the game still boxed. And one thing though, pity about the idiot driving on this video. Would have been nice to see some proper driving instead of the kamikaze stuff we have here.

You can switch now and watch from the garage and switch through drivers. Codemasters have only just caught up with how good Geoff Crammond was despite superior graphical power in their hands.
