Gothic was a game that came out to wash away all the sins of Ultima 9 and raise the Action RPG genre from perdition. It was one of the few games that made you feel like you were in an actual, living world, and not in just a video game.

I agree, it was a long time ago, when I played Gothic 1 and later Gothic 2, but to this day I haven't seen any game to reach the level of immersion Gothic had. No matter how long I played Morrowind, Oblivion, later Skyrim, I didn't feel that immersion factor in those games. For instance The Elder Scrolls games had loading screens all over the place, where Gothic had only a few loading screens, but those were because of technical limitations at that time, such as loading large areas, but not every single interior like in TES and Fallout. Also the fact, that you could kill almost anyone in the game if you were powerful enough gave a sense of meaningful choice decisions since you could potentially break chain of quests that would give you some benefits of the characters development so it mattered a lot on deciding what group of people to help and join. I played Dark Souls too and it has some great level design and puzzle layouts, however the immersion factor isn't there, because the game ironically felt soulless and the NPCs you encounter are very bland and are just there to fill a gap and didn't feel as organic as in Gothic.

Very important to me: Gothic had no questmarkers, no minimap, no waypoints, no compass. In the beginning you didn't even have a map and the first map you got wasn't even really good (missing parts, etc). You had to interact with the NPCs if you wanted to get somewhere. Stuff like that really prevented me from playing Witcher 3 which is really just running from waypoint to waypoint on a minimap.

One thing i hated in gothic 1 and 2 that its difficult to find some NPC's and obviously devs had an idea where you could ask for directions but you could only ask for thorus and diego locations(probably budget limited as it would require way more NPC lines to be recorded)
@TheTexasDice
@TheTexasDice 3 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but all the quest locations are described to you. So if you pay attention or read the questlog, you are told exactly where to go in a lore friendly manner. If you turn off Skyrim questmarkers for example, the game just stops functioning because it wasn't created with that in mind. "Go to dickbagger's cave" would be your only instruction, where as Gothic would say "Henry told me to search for his lost amulett in dickbaggers cave. I should find it between the old camp and the river leading up to a waterfall"

I still remember when I was playing Gothic for the first time 17 years ago. Travelling from Old Camp to New Camp. It was night and raining in game while in real life was night, cold and raining as well. I never experienced an immersion like that since then playing any other game. Gothic 1 was fantastic and Gothic 2 NotR was a masterpiece. This is the only game up to this day where you training in sword fighting actually modified the animations of how you are holding the weapon and how you attack. Fuck man... the attention to details.. the immersion.

I remember one dumb-ass reviewer from IGN or gamespot saying having trainers in different far apart locations as a negative thing in Risen. No wonder we don't get games like Gothic anymore when reviewers don't understand how small things like that are part of game mechanics and immersion.

abusing verticality in this series is a lot of fun, when the third one came around I could not remember an instance of orks shooting at me with projectiles in the first two so when I first happened upon an ork patrol near a burned down shack I climbed to the roof got my bow and started on a self appointed quest to turn orks into arrow holders, imagine my surprise when an ork got a crossbow out and promptly returned the favor.

I absolutely love this game. It's design and mechanics were so unique and well thought out. it's soundtrack & atmosphere great. just so many great ideas like NPCSs & animals having their own schedules and sleeping at night instead of the generic "attack you on sight" . I can honestly say with all other games in a similar genre... fable, the elder scrolls series, witcher, not many games will have a special place in my heart like Gothic 1 & 2... and Omg was I SOO disappointed with 3.

I can't help myself, I just have to mention that a group of players from Poland made a huge Dark Mysteries mod for gothic 1 where they added 5 new camps and really long and quite well thought scenario with 2 additional maps new weapons, armours , enemies, spells, skills and even something extra for veterans (like ring of speed that made you run faster or teleport rune for multiple locations enabled in act 1). Honestly it was so big that by the end I was a bit worn out as I tried to do every possible thing in one walkthrough. But boy oh boy what a journey it was. I won't say that that mod is better than original game but for sure it tries to at least keep up. I hope that maybe someday someone will translate it into English to make other gothic fans as happy as me. Cheers.

Gothic didn't hold your hand. At all. There was literally nothing to keep you walking smack into an army of Orcs which could kill you in one swing. At the start of the game, you were one of the weakest things in the game and even low level monsters could pose a real danger if they ganged up on you. Which was quite possible, since shooting one wolf with a bow would usually attract the entire pack, which would the proceed to tear you to shreds. The key to survival in Gothic was picking your battles carefully. That NPC might knock you out with one hit... OK, level up, get better weapons, improve your skills, try again, beat him, take his better weapon, repeat. Finding NPCs which could take you across the map and waste powerful monsters along the path was a great way to carve a safe route between the camps, since you didn't get teleportation runes until about 50% through the games and potions to increase your running speed were expensive.

Such an amazing game. Only to be topped by Gothic 2. An RPG where a minor level 3 bum (Player) could defeat a level 20+ full equipped battle Axe swinging mofo. If the player is good at the game that is. Thats game design done right. High level characters are naturally stronger, but not undefeatable. Like in the other 99% dumbed down piece of crap video games out there. Wolfs and other carnivores, did attack herbivores when they came across. Something barely to find, even in today's games. You could pull one type of foe, and let it attack another. Less EXP for you, but sometimes, its all about the loot afterwards. Gothic 1 & 2 looking like Ryse Son of Rome with the combat system of Severance Blade of Darkness. And you have the game of the ages.

The way NPCs reacted to you and the things you did in the world in Gothic 1 was still a step ahead of Gothic 2. They will actually quake in fear during conversations and disregard all of your illegal activities by literally looking the other way if you beat them up beforehand.

In Gothic 2 I think they changed the way NPCs reacted to the player's criminal acts because in 1 it was a bit too easy to exploit (like you could beat up a trader and steal all his weapons).

Doesn't really matter if you have all of their stuff anyway. :p It may have been done instead to keep you from running around and punching out every single NPC just to grind experience. You can still do that, but at least there's some kind of consequence for it.

What I love about snappers is that they slowly sneak up to you from behind, i even think that they would stop if you turn around towards them but if you are running through their area and dont look back you might get surprised by 1 or 2 of them just sneaking right behind you ready to pounce and kill you once they are close enough. plus how NPC take of running when an enemy gets close that is stronger then they are.

Gothic had npc's routine's done right. People were sleeping, eating, talking to each other and were doing all sorts of diffrent stuff... And that was the FIRST game done by Piranha Bytes... At the other hand you had Morrowind. Characters were randomly walking in circles and that's it.Then in 2006 Oblivion came out and Npc's were still randomly walking around. But this time they could talk to each other... Like in first Gothic... A game from 2001... Sad thing is that shit like Oblivion is called AAA game... And PB was trying to hit a larger audience by making Gothic similar to TES... And disaster called Gothic 3 happened... I know comparing npc routines may not be a reason good enough to call game a shit but... Compare Gothic 2 NotR fight mechanic where you had to use different strategies against enemies with different attack patterns... And the fight mechanic from any TES game where you just press one button all the time...

Yey... You have to download patches to make game playable... Yey... I don't believe G3 is more entertaining even with some patches. I mean... They might fix game breaking bugs like - Milten didn't showed in this shrine on top of mountain or whatever. And im I'm pretty sure he has one of this key items needed to complete the game, so yeah. But even if that shit is fixed i don't think some patch may repair the broken fighting mechanic, because is even more broken than in TES series, like you had to drink potions in order to... Not die i guess? In G3 i managed to beat shit out of orks and freed the whole city with starting equipment while randomly mashing LMB... Try to do the same in Gothic 2... And yes. Arcania was the disaster like they took Gothic 3 and made it even worse. Good thing it's not a Gothic anymore xD

The only thing G3 did better (IMO) was the music. The soundtrack is god damn amazing. Kai Rosenkranz did great job with this orchestra. I played arcania with my friends once (i think it was an expansion). We managed to climb on some stone pillar thingy and jump trough invisible wall and fall under the map. In previous games there were no invisible walls preventing you from... Geting yourself killed :v In Arcania you had to do all quest in the area in order to proceed further... And you could increase stats without teacher... They basically made some hack n slash :/

Most people (with maybe the exception of the German fanbase) do not know the circumstances behind G3 and why it was such a botched up job. You see, when G3 was in development JoWood (Gothic's piece of shit publisher) was in financial trouble and forced PB to release the game earlier then PB wanted. This broke many Gothic fans heart and angered many including PB, who had a very strained relationship with their publisher to this point (JoWood was never a good publisher). PB took their cue from it and left JoWood, but they had to leave behind the Gothic franchise because JoWood put it's greedy fingers on it to save it's ass (intellectual property and that crap). That's when the infamous G3 expansion came out and after that the crap they called Arcania. It was made by a completely different team, so you can go figure why it was this crappy.

to be fair "sausage fest" is to be expected in a prison colony isnt it. i mean in a colony where criminals are supposed to mine ore - very hard physical labour, you dont really expect the place to be overrun by women
@amberbaum4079
@amberbaum4079 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think it was even mentioned ingame that the few woman who got transported in as "cargo" where prisoners from all female prisons, who where given the option to stay where they are or to be send to the colony. It's funny, but when you think about all the outbursts from gamers and non-gamers for games not including a certain type of ethnicity, skincolor, female cast, etc. then I always look at them and the modern day developers baffled and think: "What's the problem? This game had it all way back then and the only reason the first game didn't had many female characters was indeed because of logical reasons (no bullshit reasons). And no one.......NO ONE at that time had any of those issues we have nowadays (Some of them a warranted others are not. It's a mixed bag and I won't dismiss it entirely). New graphics, game mechanics was what people were interested in and payed attention to. Yet PB still made their cast feel natural and nobody cared or was angry about having a negro friend (Gorn). I mean, who doesn't like Gorn? Then Gothic 2 came out and since we were outside of the barrier in the real world with cities and such we naturally got to see a very lively and vibrant cast of women. And again, no one told PB that they should include women or commented about the lack of female cast. It was just the natural conclusion that cities and the rest of the civilization must have women next to men.
@OrkarIsberEstar
@OrkarIsberEstar 7 жыл бұрын
very true. You may complain the women in G1 were sexualised but...well again very logically so, they were traded as sexslaves to th prisoners in exchange for the ore what do you expect. its like complaining bondage porn shows a woman being tied oO yeah kinda whats that about ^^ G2 was compelty realistic in its design of the females, and most didnt even have any kind of cleavage to show the only skin showing expcetion was the woman that sided with the bandits. I cant believe the SJWs today and the pandering...back in the day people seriously didnt care. I loved Gorn, the best of the companions out there and that he was black never really came to my awareness....sure he is black obviously but so what? didnt care at all. if he was blue and from outer space i might have cared though as that doesnt really fit in the franchise...despite the almighty Alien Dwarf ;)
@amberbaum4079
@amberbaum4079 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, people were just there and they were...just people. You didn't even noticed the appearance they gave them. They blended it really well and it felt natural. The thing with the woman in G1 one is true. They were meant to be playthings for mean assholes (I'm having a hard time liking the arch or ore barons). I highly doubt they end up being happy in the end. But that doesn't matter. It was never about them. I am just glad that the game mentioned and explained to us on how and why they even got here. As for pandering and SWJs, I think both sites are just dumb knuckleheads. My problem is that in the end natural and believable world-building falls flat in those debates and that's what the fucking point should be in the first place. Screw your gay companion if it's thrust at us and presented in the most cheapest way. Make it so that the information fits the narration and ends up feeling natural. No one runs around telling people their sexual orientation out of the blue. Who does that? It doesn't even matter in the most cases. Except for romanceable chars like in Bioware games or dating sims. As for sexualization: I remember not playing certain games as a kid back in the 90' because the advertisement of those games was something not really meant for. Or at least that's how I felt and some of them made me uncomfortable when I was a little girl (Please, remember. That was in the 90' with no influence via platforms that were overcrowded by US Americans with ignorant and polarized views). Which was too bad because Divine Divinity is a rad and funny game. I just recently played it. If I had to pick games out that do create a natural environment (with the focus on the people) well as an example for devs and people who want X in their target game no matter what then I would pick Gothic or Shadowrun Dragonfall. Or maybe The Elder Scroll Series.
@OrkarIsberEstar
@OrkarIsberEstar 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. In general i had the feeling that many earlier RPGs had much more realistic believable consistant worlds and way more immersion because they werent afraid of realistic portrayal of their chosen game world. If you set a game in medieval germany of 800 AD. Well there wont be any black, asian or non white people around. Women will not be equal and will not be able to play the same classes as males. Some Games actually factored that in and while you could choose your gender, it came with different statistics like male characters received bonus points in strength and endurance while female characters got bonus points in agility and luck. There were games where classes were gender or race restricted simply cause it doesnt make much sense to play an orc berserker as elf. And i liked that. Gothic has drugs, alcohol, sex a lot of cursing in it and people peeing at the wall of buildings. it wasnt afraid of being sexist or racist cause the game world was. i remember games where you went through the entire game with some companions and friends and got to know them better and better. You may marry one of them and build friendships. And near the very end you find out the awesome warrior you got in your group is gay. And only if you make an effort to find out more about him. On the other hand there are now games, where there are a lesbian, a gay, a bisexual and at least one non white person just for the sake of them being in the game. They have abysmal backstories and horrendous wrighing and are so cliche it hurts, they rub you in the face what their sexuality is, dress and act so over the top "gay" it hurts and you kick them out of the party - not because you are homophobic or racist but because they are annyoing as hell. I mean i dont have a problem with homosexuals in a game, but please treat them as real people. I remember Mass Effect 3 your new yewman, she didnt get much dialogue but she was a character with motivations and it wasnt until about half of the game completed that you get to know that she is lesbian and she aint telling you herself unless you try to date her. And after that you play chess and get to find out that she is actually a competitive and very succesfull player who even latr in the game can win a championship. Thats a way to deal with it. To "who does that" well...SJWs? i guess ^^ I mean there are people out there who identify with their sexuality to the point where there is nothing more about them. Like being gay is their entire identity. Sadly i encounter lots of trans people who have nothing more to their character than being trans. On the other hand i am into the BDSM community and while many choose it as a 24/7 lifestyle you still wont notice unless you ask or are into it as well and start seeing the "signs" and if they wear collar, leash or whatever openly its either an event for that or you are really good friends and you know about it anyway so they feel they can live who they are without problems. Sexualisation...i think this topic is one that is misrepresented. According to feminism basicly having any female in a game that doesnt dress like a nun or look like a fat landwahle is considered sexualised. on the other hand, it completly ignores that men are often very sexualised too. When men are sexualised its called a male power fantasy. And when men are objectified its somehow totally ok. The problem i have there is that the SJWs make people care about non issues. Just like with the race thing - people seriously didnt care until people like Anita Sarkeesian showed up. I cant stomache the hypocrsy though - complain that fleshlights exist that reduce a woman to her sexual organs while at the same time having multiple dildos in the desk. Dont get me wrong i dont have a problem with games that sexualise or objectify men - or women. But why is that an issue? Real life people choose to be objecitfied or sexualised cause they have fun doing so, why should things be taboo in games that are just accepted reality outside of games. Why should games not have racism when racism is a real world problem. In TES games the racism was sometimes very real - but in all games when you didnt choose to play as the dominant race of the title. And it added a lot to the game in my oppinion. Anyway games can include sex and erotic stuff for me if it is done in a realistic beleivable fashion. Unless its a satire game like Leisuresuit lary or an actual porn game then go crazy. But i always found that "adult themes" in RPGs make the world even more alive and richer. Gothic 2 has prostitutes and you can have sex with one of them - that doesnt make the entire game about sex My wife plays a lot of RPGs - and if she can, she loves wearing slutty sexy outfits and make her character as sexy looking as she can cause she enjoys playing like that - unless she plays as warrior then she wants functional working full plate armor. I remember how she freaked out in.,.i think it was guild wars 2 where the armor was acutally quite good, full cover, entire body hidden in plate but the boots had heels...who the fuck fights with plate heels and thats what got her mad
@amberbaum4079
@amberbaum4079 7 жыл бұрын
I sooo can understand your wife! I love realistic and functional armor. If I play a warrior then I damn well want my female warrior look like one with muscles and better has some proper armor. Even my Orc dude gets some nice practical armor because I cannot let this poor guy being unprotected and cold in Skyrim. Time and place is important. Wear something practical on the battlefield and wear something sexy or comfy in the bedroom. I don't mind Bards (male or female) wearing sensible nice looking stuff that enhances their appearance while a warrior with full armor (the real shit not the some pseudo armor) is enjoying their drink next to them in a tavern. I expect that taverns are warm inside and have at least one fireplace so you can put on less clothes while staying inside. I think for the most issues it mostly boils down as to having a choice and not perpetuating an agenda with your game if it contains homophobia, racism and all the other horrible stuff. That's what most don't get. Either the devs handle the material badly or someone doesn't get it and their precious feefees end up hurt. Bioware side-stepped this issues all together in their Dragon Age series. We have racism and we have oppression based on what you were born with: Elves and Mages. Thus they avoided creating a shitfest in their community and everyone can still relate. So it's always funny when someone comes up to devs and says: "But this is a fantasy world? Why do homosexuals need to be oppressed in this world. Just look at Dragon Age!" Me on the other hand: "Mate.....Dragon Age has it too, you just don't think about it because it's not your gay ass that gets oppressed. Still, I'll admit that it's a smart move to get everyone on board to enjoy the fun while dealing with serious issues. At the same time you really shouldn't take a piss at people creating worlds based on our world. If someone wants to make a history game then it's possible that your gay ass won't be able to strut around with your ingame lover in the open." As for what feminist wants. I get that there are several fractions and voices amongst them. And I don't belong to them. Not everyone wants what you have just described (landwhales). I meet both variants of feminists. They are very muted were I am. For the most part, I will never say no to more body types in games for EVERY GENDER if it enhances the immersion. I can relate more to the feminism my mother fought for when we still had major disadvantage in rl - like being a lonesome soul on a podium at the parliament while getting booed at from all their fellow male politicians just because you want to be able to have the same rights. I can't get behind the fanatical and mind boogling voices of our shrieking US American "feminists" - you know... the noisy ones, because I also talked to some reasonable ones who know what the word feminism means and don't like how it got warped and twisted. It's just sad...and I don't know how explain myself sometimes. People should just be more nice and respectful to each other. And everyone.......EVERYONE has preferences. Regarding Anita Sharekkesian or whatever she is called. I think she would have been never this big if the opposition would have just ignored her. They found her lonesome undiscovered ass and made her big by screaming. She is the monster they created. And I wasn't even aware that she existed for a long time because we move in platforms. The first time I heard about her was because someone was complaining. She was and is still unimportant in my life. I will not give her my attention and make my own judgements, because I want some fun games that won't feed me garbage. And wanting to have some realistic armor and realistic looking warrior body for the female chars isn't really much too ask for for a world were our physics still are in place. If you advertise your game for female players next to your male playerbase then give them something. I want a female Shepard in ME that looks like she had the same experience as the male Shepard. She is advertised as his counterpart and yet she doesn't even remotely look like a N7. He has muscles, little scars and has wrinkles. Fem!Shep on the other hand........meh. If a game is clearly geared towards the male audience like a Harem game then I know that this one is just not for me. Simple. Now, I am not a person that scream that every male main char in a game should have at least a female option. Sometimes it fits more the storytelling if the char is fixed. I enjoy playing the nameless hero, J.C. Denton or Adam Jensen. They are all good characters with interesting worlds. Geralt looks also fun to play. What I want to say is that if you make something, make it so that it fits and makes you not think: "Why did you even bother. Can you take this token character away? If you can't handle it then don't do it. It will just hurt your game." Anyway, back to immersive games. I'll say there are two type of games: Gothic(realistic games) and Loren - The Amazon Princess (unrealistic). I can play both because they won't lie about what they are and aren't there to mold themselves to everyone's taste. Loren is a "strategy" but also most importantly a dating sim games a la Conan the Barbarian. You've got your sexy scantly clad woman, but you also got you sexy scantly clad man. Except for Saren, Elenor and Loren's uncensored version the rest looks fine. Now that's some equality I like. What also helped that they didn't went to overboard with it and didn't made it too ridiculous. Loren is not a parody and tries to tell a serious story (although it's just kinda standard fantasy trash). The nudity and sexy armor matches Loren's universe whereas it would stick out like a sore thumb in Gothic. Again, time and place. *Random note: Gothic's armor design is amazing* Since we are already talking about it, I have something to confess: I believe that the majority of the LBGT+ advocating crowd that lurks around on the internet are straight and mostly europid people. It's incredible how ignorant they talk about social matters. Or how ignorant, segregating and racist (!!!) their vocabulary is without them even noticing :'D. They act very patronising the way they want to "protect" the "oppressed". And lastly: I agree with the whole "identifying with sorely your sexuality" part. That shit gets me every time. Especially bad when they managed to project that shit into one of your fav games - meaning the dev decide to accommodate them :P

The point about slopes and topographic complexity, vertical structure was very interesting and is often overlooked. Almost every modern RPG is missing it. Look at Skyrim or the Witcher 3. In the distance you see mountains and valleys, but you pretty much walk straight the entire time because inclination is too flat. When you ride through the hills of Skellige in Witcher or stumble down hills in Skyrim, it's basically a glitchfest, in one game your horse races up steep hills with his head in the ground, legs up because covering distance is always the same speed regardless of topography, in the other game you slowly slide through the air, occasionally taking damage or just slip down abruptly. Because the games weren't intended to be explored that way and vertical structure only exsists for aethetic purposes but not as part of the games' mechanics. The high amount of complex vertical structure in Gothic is way more important for satisfying exploration than people realise, in fact that point is always overlooked, I haven't found another review that mentions this point. Very good observation.

Even the typical go out into forest hunt wolves and bring me their pelts quest ends up: you meet a coward hunter to help you, he wets his pants depending on your choices, you meet one of the hardest early stage monster, you might have to leave him to die. New rpg designers and especially mmorpg designers should play gothic 1-2 at least 5 times.

My favourite part was the mobility and being able to go or sometimes glitch my way almost anywhere. After that, I found small fences blocking my path, or being unable to go on top of buildings in other games to be immersion breaking. And when in an MMO a GM told me that shooting from a roof at mobs that can't reach me is considered cheating, I was just pissed. My least favourite part of Gothic was the experience, levelling and skill point system.

my favorite thing to do in gothic is, go to the orc area, pull some orcs into the guards, wait for the orcs to die, loot the orc weapon, go to the new camp to knock out Lars, who won't die yet because he's plot critical and then take his axe, which is one handed and deals more damage than the orc weapon. now I can one shot pretty much anything in act 1

I adored this game, it was so difficult, even the simplest creatures could kill you even after you improved, the raptors were nasty, the Trolls you meet later were scary as hell unless you got the shrink spell. Exploration was brilliant, NPCs were brilliant, the three camps were so different and when you meet Diego, that guy's voice was so iconic I recognised it in Witcher 3. The inventory system was a little awkward but the lack of interface, the fact that you sucked at everything the NPC's, the world itself made sense and the next time I saw something that alive was Kingdom Come Deliverance so 1997 to 2018...which means every other RPG in between was a tame version. Quests helped, they were not fetch and carry copy and paste busy work. Gothic 2 was awesome, you had new land to explore and then...then they sent you back to the Gothic 1 map with the barrier gone and that was brilliantly done. To go back to the place you loved was so welcome as a player, to see how it had changed, to see how the Orcs had arrived and taken control. Gothic 3 sent you to another map and progressed the story even further, it was hard, a wolf could kill you at the start and after 5 hours play it could still kill you because you didn't level up, you got better gear and better training but you could still fuck it up and the wolf knew how to use teeth just like it did 5 hours ago. Were they awkward, yes, where they visually stunning, they were okay, were they proper RPGs...definitely.

Yeah Gothic, by the standards of its time, certainly did look really good. People don't remember sometimes but back then you absolutely had to sacrifice some visuals for open-worlds because engines just weren't designed around that back then and hardware was WAAAY too limited to replicate the best visuals that more linear games had. Piranha Bytes made a custom engine for this open world game, had completely unique mechanics for its time, and managed to have engrossing quests and dialogue. This was back before there were "formulas" for open world design. This was back when a developer that made an open world game attempted to just make a bigger game with all of the benefits of the linear games... just done to the extreme. No repeat quests, no pointless nonsense collectables, just world building and as much interconnectivity between the world AND it's questlines as possible. They were trying to make an ACTUAL living and breathing world. Gothic 1 and 2, to this day, still portray a more realistic world than most modern open world games just by sheer virtue of the characters', their motives and the way everything interacts with each other. I didn't play Gothic for the first time until like 3 years ago, in my 20's and I was floored. Of course it was frustrating learning, but even the little things intrigued me such as picking up items through a consistent "Action button + direction" system that gave more nuance to even the simplest mechanics.

An important part of this game was a good portion of German sarcasm xD. I loved the protagonist. I loved the story, the characters, the skill system. I loved how it was true open world. You could go anywhere, the harder opponents were placed at locations the producers wanted you to go later in the story, but the doesn't necessarily stop you from trying to try these enemies still... Gothic 3 looked so good but it wasn't as immersive as Gothic 1 and Gothic 2

Whenever someone asks me what's my favorite game I don't even have to think about it twice, both the first two Gothics are the games I enjoyed the most, both back when they came out, and even right now, started the first one all over again few days ago, and I keep discovering things that I never found at the time. I just find it amazing how they managed to put so much content and giving it a purpose, and how well the world is designed. Even tho I was kinda disappointed by the third one, my personal opinion is that with the third one it lost what made it so special at the time, becoming more like a generic open world rpg.

One of my favorite games of all time (until today I really can't decide whether I like 1 or 2 more), and the liveliness of the world and its inhabitants in Gothic is the reason I did not realize what a great game Morrowind is for a long time, because everyone just stands there and has mostly the same, non-voiced dialogue. ;-D (By the way Gothic was released only a little over one year before Morrowind, not two or three like you said, and considering the scale of the game and that they had already been working on it for about 4-5 years I doubt they had the time to make their NPCs more alive at this point. Still, the first Elder Scrolls game to come close to what Gothic did in 2001 was Skyrim - ten years later. Oblivion did have NPC schedules and interactions, but they still didn't do that much, really) I only got to play Gothic 3 a few years ago, which was probably a very good thing because I could use all the community patches and such, but while the world itself was once again amazing, the game itself did not come close to how awesome the first two had been. Oh, and the combat system was horrible, and obviously beyond repair (even though it must have been even worse at release). It was really tedious to play through and I don't know if I will ever do that again (I have played through the first one at least five times, I believe, and the second two times so far). I haven't played Risen (though some day I intend to), but I'm not very hyped for Elex, to be honest. Looks like they are trying too much to rehash the setting and atmosphere of the original Gothic, with some really lame (from what I've seen so far) sci-fi elements added to it. And I am a huge sci-fi nerd so I would actually love a good sci-fi RPG in the style of Gothic - I just don't see it in this game (...yet).

I always considered the fighting mechanic to be more realistic if you compare it to other games. And that came for my little kid-self when I first had the joy to play it or watch my brother play. (*Damn, that looks fast and difficult. But it also feels very real) It was too hard for me back then, but now I can manage and the controls are indeed logical. I get why people would consider the controls to be clunky - but!!! only the controls that let's you move around (diving around is still annoying and sometimes trying to pull yourself up on a platform doesn't seem to work 100%). I never considered the combat controls to be clunky. If it's clunky then that means you made a mistake and pressed the wrong button. It's more of an acquired taste and if you can manage to learn/master it to a certain extend. It's just like in Hyper Light Drifter. Either you master the drifting mechanics or you get stuck at a certain point real fast and will not be able to progress. I'm just glad that I didn't gave up and was able to experience this beautiful game to it's full extend. Note: I remember seeing a lot of Skyrim mods recently trying to archive what gothic's combat mechanic did plus hit zones. They increase the difficulty of skyrim immensely and you cannot just run into a group of people any more expecting to mow them down.

You can definitely trace something from Gothic 1-2 in Dark Souls franchise and I wonder if it's intentional! Namely, the combat - in both games you got lock-on, you got different kinds of weapon swings, some of which can be chained into combos, you got backstep and finally block move in Gothic 1-2 which gives you some invincibility frames (although it works against humans and orcs only, makes sense!). The only major difference is that in G 1-2 you can pretty much ignore block and backstep closer to the endgame and facetank almost everything while a lot of opponents in DS are still deadly if you try to tank hits. It is very noticeable in the early game, for example if you decide to fight Borka in Gothic 2 right at the beginning of the game, you MUST block/dodge every attack of him or he'll knock you out in 1-2 hits.

One thing I loved about this game is that all NPCs, and I mean ALL of them, can be killed and they don't respawn. At the same time, when you defeat someone, they don't necessarily die, they just get knocked out unless you finish them. Same happens to you btw. So anyway, I still remember when I played this game for the first time, some dudes beat me up and took my money right at the entrance to the castle. This is how I learned that you don't die unless they finish you. I was pretty salty, so I tried to kill them multiple times and and take back what's mine. All in vain. So I told them/to myself that I will go train/level up and I will kill them. So I became everyone's errand boy, learned that most of the people there were assholes and the biggest asshole was their leader (forgot his name). At that point I got pretty tired of all these ex convicts and promised to myself that I will kill the leader as well as these original gopniks and everyone who will have a problem with that. Some time later, I joined another camp because they seemed better, got all badass and everything, returned to that castle and had one of the best video game moments of my life. It was so satisfying to come back after being their bitch as I pulled out my huge two handed quest sword saying "remember me?" I made sure to finish mage's quests first and let them leave because they were alright, but the rest of the castle had to go(with few exceptions).

Gothic was the game that made me think I was a big RPG fan. So far, the only RPGs I have ever actually liked and/or played to completion, have been the Gothic games and Risen.

Near the end of the game, I used to stay in the middle of an Orc camp with my best armor on and let them try to kill me: they couldn't even chip at my health bar. Also, with one spell, rain of fire or smt similar, you could've killed them all. Isn't this OP AF and game-breaking?

That's how it seemed to me. It was nice to see how far I've come, but if I recall correctly this was the only game when I was nearly un-killable at the end. Try doing that shit in Dark Souls, lol. The thing I was getting at was that this isn't the most perfectly (pleonasm intended) balanced game ever OMG FFS 12/10, you know?

@@oberstul1941 It actually is very balanced in terms of progression. At each point in the game there are some enemies which are just challenging ("goldilocks zone"), and others that are still too hard or already too easy. Many enemies that at first pwn you become first an equal opponent when you get that next armor, trainer, or weapon, and then completely trivial as you progress even further. It gives you this awesome feeling of progression as you work your way up from scavengers through humams to shadow beasts and orcs and finally elite orcs and other stuff. It doesn't skip any enemies, you don't get stuck, and there are no large boring patches where the enemies try to catch up with your progress (like in basically every JRPG out there, they all fall into one or more of these categories). I think it only fails at the very end, where the last fights are either too easy or too hard, depending on how optimized your character is.

Gothic 1 has no minimal damage against NPCs - if you haven't got enough strength/dexterity to overcome enemy armour, you can't even scratch them. However, NPCs had minimal damage of 1 HP against the player. Gothic 2 has minimal damage of 5 HP for both player and NPCs.

15:02 "There is no magic teleportation... [no] character [that's] just immune and immortal and you can't kill them" Actually, wrong on both counts - teleportation exists (later on in the game, as fast travel, not as a quick escape from combat, which is actually a good thing... and actually you note this just ten seconds after, so OK) and there definitely are several immortal characters, although only a small handful and someone who's just playing through the game in a regular and sensible manner likely wouldn't notice them (okay, I can think of one case where you might notice). But they are there. Gothic 3 actually doesn't have any immortal characters though, to the point where you can kill everyone and still technically be able to complete the game (although it is weaker than the first two installments... but does have its charms with all the epic pitched battles).

I like that, in gothic and gothic 2 at the start of the game everyone treat you like a total trash, then you gain respect and stuff, but when you join marcenaries in g2 they still treat you like trash, and even some merchants will refuse to trade with you. gothic doesnt go easy on you. you wanna be a marcenary criminal? ok, but you must suffer the consequences. I love it

actually, Gothic has no high difficult level at all. the first three levels are probably the hardest and if you are smart, you never skill bows and always learn melee weapon skills and strength and everything is a breeze if you keep putting points into strength. when I replay this, i actually learn bows crossbows and magic and not a lot of strength to make it harder for me. its still too easy since the AI is not the best. still the best RPG pc game from the 90s for me

Ahh, this is a nice retrospective. Helps me decide whether to buy the series. Surprisingly enough, Zelda: Breath of the Wild appears to carry that torch of verticality with the climbing mechanics and dense overworld. It even has NPC schedules.
