i recently upgraded from 16 to 32 GB of ram because of work and honestly its rare that gaming on its own uses more than maybe 14 gb of ram on average, i only noticed higher usage on Warzone and God of War. Other than that probably only city builders and strategy games use a ton of memory. On the other hand i work with giant photoshop files and half the time even 32 gb of ram isnt enough for that lol

@@sosukelele you're right, I've been recommending SSDs to everyone because I can't believe how fast apps load and startup times. It's only in gaming and multitasking that you notice the ram. My computer used to stutter every once and a while when playing intensive games and it was getting annoying so I installed just a little more ram than I needed and now I notice in more intensive scenarios the ram usage doesn't go above 80% and as a result I also got a small average fps boost of about 3-6fps depending on the game.

I got so tired of having to close my browser and other background processes when gaming on 8gb RAM that i went straight to 32gb. Im more a buy just the enough amount cause they get cheaper and better over time that can be added as much as needed any day later... And if you buy early at the current DDR technology when you upgrade later you might not even want your old kit which might be too low in performance cause at some point later ram is already like twice the bandwidth and in case you have a crappy kit that doesn't OC crap it all sucks much later on a much better PC. Ps: but if I would buy a whole new PC at this moment Id probably go for 32GB too like in a 16GBx2 with the cheapest DDR5 6000mhz kit I could find, specially with Next Gen titles I think 16GB will soon be the minimum requirement...

Also you should know games easily use way above 8GB for quite some time though not all for sure and some games already use more memory the more you have, if you see comparisons between 16gb vs 32 gb, you will see that some games will actually use a bit more on the 32GB since windows manages all resources well it probably simply allow more and despite 16GB being enough it seems some games actually put even more of the game processed data into memory despite not having a performance penalty on 16GB for now... And I saw one guy getting out of memory in 1 game with 32GB though it was not a normal situation since it's a youtuber that breaks all games on purpose, but he destroyed almost the entire world in the game and that shit eaten all the 32GB and then crashed saying out of memory LOL🤣 ps: If you go for a high performance PC at this moment in time you will probably go for 32GB since it's probably not much long for all demanding games to start having 16GB as the minimum recommended.

When I had 16 gigs I would close the game and go back to chrome where all the tabs need some time to load back in from my SSD because they've been swapped.

Depending on the budget. RAM is cheap, 50 bucks for double the RAM doesn't play a role when your CPU is above 300€ and your GPU at at least 400€ but when you're on budget you could build really powerful system with very little money. A 5600 is at 135€ were I live right now, 5500 at 100€ same price for the 12100f. Even 5600x with 175€ and 12400f for 155€ are performance beasts regarding their price. So paying half your CPU budget for memory which doesn't speed up your system as long as you're just gaming isn't really worth it. So if you're planning on a new build and you're already above 1k€, sure, why not? Even I would argue there's no need to save a buck, maybe you just invest 50€ more in a case you like or goiung from a PSU with gold certificate to a platinum one, so investing a little bit more in more memory won't neither hurt nor would it be a dumb idea but I still wouldn't call it a standard. A standard is met when the industry relies on you having such hardware and there's basically no game that runs signidficantly worse with 16GB RAM instead of 32GB, not even those games that recommend 32GB like the MSFS.

@@KolnFriedChicken I agree that 32Gb is not important if you are on a tight budget. But 16GB is really important as a minimum. If you are building a system for gaming or for work, i'd rather have a modern i3 with 16GB than an i5 with 8GB. Only reason i'd choose an i5 with 8GB ram is if i'm very sure that i will have money saved up in the next few months to buy another 8GB ram stick to add to my system. in my opinion, having a gold rated psu is not that important if you live outside of Europe. I know electricity is expensive in Europe so having an efficient psu is important. But in other continents, any psu is fine as long as it at least some kind of 80+ rating to ensure it won't explode from bad quality parts.
@KolnFriedChicken
@KolnFriedChicken Жыл бұрын
@@angrysocialjusticewarrior Yeah, but you're pretty early at a point of diminishing returns. I mean a 16GB 3,2GHz CL16 Kit costs less than 40€, so there isn't really a need to go lower than that (also 4GB DIMMs aren't produced that often, so it's a little bit more expansive, starts at 32€). If your budget is that tight, that you cannot afford an extra 8€, I would argue you cannot afford to build a gaming PC in the first place. So 2*4GB wouldn't even cross my mind...

Some programs use page files regardless of whether there’s adequate RAM space available. The reasons for doing so probably varies a lot, but this is likely why several games wouldn’t run without a page file. Certain functions are likely configured to use a page file specifically instead of RAM.
@michaelbauers8800

Arguably no programs have control over that. Only windows can touch that. So IMO, it's Windows which decides to use the paging file even if you have a lot of RAM. Perhaps so it can use your spare RAM for caching and that sort of thing.

Games these days are made for Consoles first and foremost. I wouldn't expect to see many games not being able to run on 8 or even 16gb until at least the next generation of consoles are made outside of a few PC only titles. Most Gamers seem to not understand how RAM works. RAM is an extra cache for the CPU to use without having to pull it from storage, when people see games with massive ram utilization they are only doing so simply because it is there to use, not necessarily because it absolutely requires that much. There's a very popular saying over in the server side of compute and that is Unused RAM is wasted RAM. As long as you stick to dual channel most games will even run on 4gb with only a really small hit to 1% lows.

The real impact from adding RAM is really around latency. The review was pretty good at talking about the issues around memory management and paging, but one thing that's rarely mentioned is that OS behavior around page files has changed over the last 30 years. Back so many years, page file usage was so costly that it would largely not be used until memory was almost consumed, and this is where the common gaming dogma of "if it fits in memory, you don't need more of it" comes from. About 20 or so years ago, paging algorithms began to change. With faster HDDs and more RAM hungry (less efficiently written) programs operating systems started to run into a problem where by the time your RAM was consumed, you were backed into a corner where any further memory requests would begin seriously eroding system performance, which made it pretty hard to get out of a heavy paging condition because there was little real memory left for the system to support the actions of the user. As a result, pre-paged frames became common in OS kernels, and usually configurable such as through the Linux /proc filesystem. In order to preserve performance, once the system hit a RAM consumption threshold, the kernel would begin paging out the frames of memory that it deemed less recently accessed and not actively used. The idea being that doing this during low system consumption periods would allow for more memory use before the page file became the sole source of new memory frame creation. In many common Linux distros, the default was about 60%, but the actual threshold would often vary around the 50% mark or so in different flavors of various operating systems like Windows. Around the same time, OS creators began providing cache services in RAM for file access and other duties. That extra RAM the program's not using? The system is using that as a file cache for faster return read/writes. This is likely where some of the better lows performance is coming from for the testing. By reducing the amount of times the game needs to reach back to slower storage for file data, the impact to latency from the file call is reduced. File caches are commonly assumed to be empty memory, but in actual testing this is not entirely true, especially in the new era of OS memory management where dynamic memory allocation is the trend. What happens is that most of it can be purged from real memory, but open files still need to remain in memory, and that's variable. And now instead of paging at hard levels, OS memory management layers mark pages as possible to page to disk, which blurs the line between what is likely to be paged and not before all RAM is consumed. The end result is that the low end performance impact from memory and paging is difficult to ascertain for certain, since concepts like having a bigger file cache and having less paging due to a lower percentage of the memory being used come into effect when running into parts of games that maybe need to rotate data in memory or need to load new assets. At the same time, having everything in memory can potentially crowd out new information, incurring a cost in ejecting and reorganizing pages through purges rather than simply rewiring the page memory map, which in some games may be what's causing more latency hits with the page file off. So what does this all come down to? Well, if you just want to buy enough to be able to load the game, then the baseline requirements are adequate and you may not even notice much of a difference with faster storage if you're not sensitive to latency (or the game/workload in question doesn't incur a hit to loading new assets or does so through loading screens)... but if you're sensitive to lower end latency and stutter, more RAM is better even if you're not seeing the total numbers for your game load into RAM, if only to further reduce file loading latency and reduce page misses. Unfortunately, latency and user experience is hard to measure and doesn't show through in average FPS testing, so I think we have a lot of inappropriate testing out there relating to measuring the actual impact of more RAM on gaming experience, but it's not a big deal because many people simply don't care that much about these lower-end, less frequent latency hits. (I personally do, and I also do programming and system architecture/testing work... so I spring for the faster, larger RAM segments.) As far as having a page file is concerned, it's safe to not have one if you have a significant excess of memory, but having a small page file may be the ideal compromise in many circumstances.

That was a nice read, thanks. Along with the video showing 0.1% improvements in some games, this actually explains a bit my anecdote why 32 GB on one of my machines feels better than the 16 GB one even though they had similar fps, and even similar 1%s. This actually got me thinking about possibly having 64 GB for my next build in a year from now. However I don't really know if my non-gaming workloads need it so it might not actually be unnecessary... but that's besides questionable gaming benefits.
@TheEireknight
@TheEireknight Жыл бұрын
@@QuantumConundrum I think part of the complexity is that so much of it depends on the system, the type of RAM, the design and configuration we're going for, etc. One known outcome of adding RAM is that the memory map grows, and that means it takes more processing to manage, and that means hotter RAM controllers, hotter overclocks, etc... so one thing to be aware of there is that 64GB may help many, but may hurt other cases. But as long as the system can handle it, and has the capacity, more could be better and likely will be better in the future. I'm glad someone found value in what I wrote. :)

Had switched to 32gb back in 2015, 64gb in 2020, and now using 128gb; still saw usability increase over 32gb and 64gb. Can leave browsers, game and software launchers, and virtual machines open without an issue. Having used various amounts of ram and storage i've adopted the mindset of "speed is great but capacity is best." Windows 10/11 as a whole only give the impression it uses less ram thanks to memory compression; when one gives their build more ram there is more room for the operating system to "breathe." Unfortunately demonstrating the overall smoothness and responsiveness of an operating system as a whole doesn't translate well into video; it is something that should be experienced. I would never turn off the page file, the amount of random glitches and bugs is not worth the headaches of troubleshooting. Having used ssds with over 70,000 hours of uptime and many TBs of writes; its well worth leaving on for peace of mind. Ensure you maintain backups of your important files whenever possible. For those still on 16gb and less; consider looking for a deal on 32gb kits these days, being able to leave more things open without caring is a quality of life enhancement when using your computer. A reminder that, "Life is good but it could be better."

That game I feel should be included in more benchmarks because it is not only not optimized well, but it also can respond better to CPU or RAM changes in a much more marked way that some other games. It's a classic example of "brute forcing" performance when there is typically an abundance of power or engine limitations found in other games. Great video btw! It really depends on how you use your pc, for example gaming with multiple apps and chrome etc running in the background or not, whether the game gpu or cpu bound (if you are gpu bound it really doesn't matter at all) also if you have a fast nvme ssd the cpu can pull data almost at the same rate when you run out of ram
@jonasGancedo
@jonasGancedo 2 жыл бұрын
@@kerotomas1 Of course it depends but i was talking about gaming only. Also, even the greatest Nvme 4.0 drive can't even compete with DDR3. The goal of the ram is to keep data the cpu will be needing, and to let the cpu access to it really fast, we're talking about around 50 Nanoseconds. That's why the cache in a cpu is important, it's really fast but also has a really low latency, i think (I might be wrong) around 1 nanosecond or even below. So, of course a great SSD acting as ram is great, but not a "life saver" if you don't have enough ram.

It also matters how you distribute the RAM. i.e. if you have 2x8GB and then add further 2x8, even if the app will not use above 16GB there will be an increase in perfromance as AMD has been tested extensively and 4 modules provide better perrformance (dual ranks). So an absolutely true test of 32GB vs 16GB would be to use 2x8GB and 2x16GB I think. The difference can be as much as 5-15% simply by going from 2 modules to 4 modules. Or maybe you did exactly that and used 2x16GB and sorry if I did not pay proper attention then. Also: how about adding a RAMDRIVE, assign a drive letter and set a page file on it? If you want a bunch of ram that your system doesn't use I suggest buying it and keeping it in a box on the shelf instead or maybe on display on your desk, or maybe use it as an antisag bracket for your gpu. Why would you want components you paid for and installed to not be used? RAM is a cache for Data to sit in so that the CPU doesn't have to pull it from storage(which is slower) if your system, games, and apps see it there to use then they're going to put things there so they can access it quicker.

There are pcie gen3 drives that will be better than pcie gen4 drives in this scenario. The IOPS and IO latency especially during mixed read and writes are the most important for page/swap file performance. Generally the best drives in this department at the moment are the SKhynix p31 and p41 (pcie 3 and 4 respectively). Technically the best would be an Intel Optane drive like a 905P or a P5800X. The only issue is that you will have to be willing to want to spend a lot of money for the capacity.

This is about gaming, and it’s right that 16GB RAM is enough just to run most current games at optimum on a single monitor. That said, it does seem an almost criminal waste of hardware power that with CPU's now having enough cores for flawless multitasking, and GPU's being equipped to feed several monitors, all that potential is hamstrung by a minimal amount of RAM. I'm not suggesting that anyone simply wanting the best from games needs more than the mandatory 16 GB, but anyone who has a mind to use existing hardware potential for duel (or triple) monitor multitasking doesn't need to pay an inordinate amount extra to get 32GB or 64GB. Ever since I upgraded to 32GB, no crashes whatsoever. I would encourage people to upgrade to 32GB if they can, because not only are you going to avoid memory issues, but you are also future proofing your PC. Edit: I think it’s a good time to rephrase myself with the “memory issues” I had before upgrading to 32GB of ram. To start off, my 16GB of ram is fine. The ONLY time I would run into a memory issue is when large background applications are running, like “News and Interests” (which can eat up a lot of memory) while playing a game like GTA V (I play at 1440p high settings). Even then, I didn’t run into issues right off the bat. The reason I upgraded to 32GB is not because my 16GB is bad, nor is it faulty. It’s because I wanted to “future proof” my PC when I build myself a new one in the next few months. I haven’t ran into any issues ever since upgrading to 32GB. After reading my original comment, I can understand why people were telling me my memory was faulty, but I made it sound worse than it actually was. I reinstalled the 16GB and played a couple of games for an hour to see if I ran into any problems and I didn’t run into one. Sorry about the long edit, but I hope I cleared everything up.

I never have to decompress any cached data and I don't notice the difference between loading games from a slower or faster SSD The main difference that I noticed is that (with my beefy CPU) I can watch a stream, do a discord call, have a game on hold in the background (like Elite Dangerous) and play a second game with my friends (like the division 2)

You can not run without pagefile, you want to at least set a maximum allocation ( set aside for incase needed ) to pagefile as with auto Windows will set the max to double the amount of system ram and not only that will do the same to every set drive space. Minimum for the max that apps will even start with is like 4gb, having 32gb ram and auto set pagefile is 64gb pagefile + 64gb on the next drive and the next ( my case would be 256gb total pagefile ) where likely only 2gb might get used. But there are processes that run only in pagefile ' paged pool '. I am running 32gb system ram and the OS on an HDD, the pagefile set to: 16MB - 4000MB, under the Memory tab of Task Manager 1gb is used for Paged Pool even with 10gb/32gb used ram. This has been a thing for Windows for a couple decades now.

Pages being in the page file even if there's unutilized RAM does not allow you to conclude that "there are processes that run only in pagefile".

I know I'm about a year late for this video but, I just discovered your channel and subbed immediately on watching your video about using older hardware. My last rig was able to play most current titles until just recently and it is an AM2 Plus Phenom II X4 I built about 6 months after AM3 came out. It cost about half what an AM3 platform would have cost. I suspect the newish EVGA GTX 1650 XC Ultra GPU helped keep the old rig relevant longer. I notice you have an AMD CPU and not a Radeon card. Some (12GB) of my 32 GB of ram on my b550 board with a Ryzen 7 5700X is shared with my RX 6750 XT 12 GB GPU. I suspect having 28 GB of available video ram instead of 12 GB does give me a higher FPS. Granted the 4 GB from my MB is slower DDR4 instead of the faster GDDR6, more ram is more ram. It may explain why some don't believe I get ~170 FPS average and ~70 FPS lows playing Cyberpunk 2077 (pre Phantom Liberty) at 1440p with high settings and no RT. I tried playing with the frame generation or up-scaling but, it seemed to give me a poorer experience with slightly lower FPS and lower quality looking graphics. Maybe I was doing it wrong?

For gaming alone, I find it almost impossible to go beyond 12gb of ram. For productivity, as a hobby, I've also never used more than 10gb of ram. 8gb is definitely too little, 16gb is more than enough for gaming and casual productivity (photoshop, blender, game dev, just not at a professional level where you'd handle gigantic files).

16gb of ram is definitely not "more than enough" for gaming if you play on high-ultra settings and on higher resolutions than 1080p. Same with productivity software, you will use up 16gb a lot faster than you'd think, especially if you want to have several things open in the background simultaneously while you work (discord, youtube etc...), which most people do...

So essentially there isn't too much of a performance difference but sometimes there is, the main benefit is a longer SSD lifespan. I'd say longer SSD lifespan is reason enough to run 32gb over 16gb. 32GB is around 140$CAD right now which is close to the price of a decent SSD (100-200$)

add in this decision having minimized apps on tray, gaming while watching youtube and have a good alttab experience. its been some years since we move from 8 to 16gb as minimum. and the minimum runs things, yes, but aways have hidden drawbacks. time to time you bump into this and that that makes you wish for more.

Really should have been both single rank kits to see apples to apples. Gains are so small anyway you can't trust a SR vs DR test when you are trying to find benefits of 16gb vs 32gb. Would have been best to do 2x16gb DR and 4x8gb SR of the exact same spec and timings. Or 2x8gb SR vs 2x16gb SR.

When using 4*8GB you have the exact same behaviour adressing the columns like using 2*16GB DR memory. In fact if the IMC can handle double the DIMMs with the same frequency and timing (which often times isn't the case) then 4*8GB will be faster than 2*8GB SR just because of the way the CPU can adress the RAM.#+ So you either compare 4*4GB (rank doesn't matter in that config)/ 2*8GB DR vs. 2*16GB DR/ 4*8GB or 2*8GB SR vs 2*16GB SR

Not true anymore. 2x16gb 3200 C16 / 3600 C18 kits are often single rank now. Took me 3 tries to find a dual rank kit. Corsair LPX 3200mhz C16 was single and Gskill 3200 C16 were both 32gb kits that were single. Finally I found a 2x16gb 3200mhz C16 Corsair LPX kit that ended up being dual rank. Took 3 tries but finally with this CMK32GX4M2D3600C18R $115 kit it was dual rank. To make matters worse other people could search that same kit and buy it just to have it be single rank. They have different versions (marked on the sticks) of the kits with different modules/layouts. The model is the same but the version number is different like v4.45 vs v3.70. I found a reviewer on Newegg with that kit that mentioned it was dual rank so I figured lets roll the dice on this kit. I figured if I was upgrading from my single rank 2x8gb kits I didn't just want double the ram I wanted the small benefit of dual rank performance at stock XMP speeds.

Budget money for gaming is ALWAYS best allocated towards a better GPU, unless we're talking hundreds of dollars. The boost in performance in gaming you get spending say $100 more on a GPU vastly outweighs spending the same amount on a CPU or RAM upgrade, unless you're making a giant leap (ie. 980ti to 3090ti).

Quality footage, thanks for your effort. It's actually weird, that you didn't benefit more from the dual rank DIMMs because latency is pretty much Zen's steriod or its achilles heel depending on the view point and dual rank should lower latency significantly. That you didn't really benefit from the extra 16GB when just gaming is kinda given. Yeah, the memory management can be less aggressive which may result in a little more headroom for the CPU but after all modern CPUs are such beasts that that's nothing to worry about, that's like 'cleaning your regisitry' in hopes of a faster system... Not going to happend for anything more than a Athlon X2 or Pentium 4.
