The amount of max loadness your ear can take during an 8 hour day is 85 desibels, above this and you have to use earbuds or headsets that dampen the noise. If you increase the loudness, the shorter you can stay in that area before your ears would suffer hearing loss. Since sound is defined on a logarythmic scale, 3db increase sounds like double the intencity,because its equal double the energy. So if you game the 16 hours a day on 80db average, eat takeaway pizza and have powertrips to the toilets, and you have 8hours of sleep; that by definition would give you hearing loss on the long run. (No 15hours would not save it in this absurd examle).

I could hear my friend's car as he pulled into my street from about 100m away, and used to mix/engineer music. Now I have a continuous ringing in my ears, and struggle to hear my friends and family when they speak to me. It ruins your life. Don't ignore your habits. They define what you will become.

This video makes me really happy. I'm born with bad hearing, which has been a thing in my family for years. About six months ago I got a serious case of tinnitus, sounded like a smoke detector in my inner ears at times, even deafened real sounds. This is of course due to many years of gaming at loud volumes with headphones, where the audio is literally next to your ears. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I appreciate someone addressing the importance of taking care of hearing. It's not fun asking "what?" every time someone tells you something as us hard of hearing often do, trust me. Take care of your hearing, people. It's irreplaceable. Thanks for this video, Phil.

@jonpaton61996 жыл бұрын
Hey Philip, nice video. From my experiences in working in audio engineering (both live and studio) i'd love to try and extend some knowledge for everyone. Firstly on compression. Generally compression's two most important settings are threshold and ratio. In other words, when the compressor kicks in and how hard it kicks in. With these two settings comes some flexibility. You could set the threshold really low and have a low ratio, meaning the compressor is on most of the time, but only doing a bit (2:1 ratio or so (in other words, for every decibel of volume increase on the input, the compressor will only output one.)) or you can have a higher threshold with a strong ratio(6:1), acting more like a catch for high volume sounds. In a case for csgo, this could be a better option. It would not distort the sound of footsteps or ambient sounds until a loud sound (say for example an awp shot) triggers the compressor's high threshold and savagely compress' the output sound. Not ideal, as the compressor's work is clearly audible but for competitive play it's not about how 'pretty' the sound is, but how clear (like an alarm) whilst the softer ratio lower threshold would create a more 'washy muddy' sound, not the desired crisp sounds for clarity and precision. Ducking is the same as a compressor, but a compressor is self keyed (based on its own volume) while a duck is a compressor that takes how much it should activate based of another channels volume (using that level to trigger the threshold and ratio). In Philip's example at 6:35 the side chain on the compressor is his voice. The issue with prepackaged one button compressor's and side chains is you have no knowledge or control over when and how hard they activate. If you wish to use either of these methods for sound modification, I'd recommend running csgo through a combination of Voicemeeter + IL Minihost, or something alike. But read below: I run Voicemeeter + IL Minihost to compensate for my microphone quality until i get a new one to run into my interface. Because of this, i run the following signal chain: Precise Noise reduction -> gate -> eq -> compressor. I run this at 48k sample rate (pretty standard rate). I run it at 512 samples. Doing so (ontop of processing delay for each process) delays the audio from my microphone 10.7ms. For me, this is acceptable for my microphone seeing as there is already delay before my communication is heard, whilst for my headphones, this would be an unacceptably long delay, especially in a competitive, sound heavy game (which is where you would be applying this kind of processing for best audio (catch 22). Mind you this is with no dedicated sound card. My final note on saving your precious hearing is one on the phenomenon of binaural summation. Let's pretend you use ear buds for a second, and you take one out, you would lose 6db (half the volume) due to sound only coming from one ear, not two. This leads to people wanting to turn up their sound by 6db to compensate (twice the volume) which can cause damage to one of their ears. Very common in the music industry where band members pull out an in-ear to hear the ambience/they have a crap mix and cant hear what they wanted to. Translate to CSGO and (if HDR and other csgo audio processes dont manage it (i'd assume they do)) this may help explain one of the reasons ambient noises exist in CSGO, to give a baseline volume, not just for gunshot reference as Philip mentioned. Hopefully if after reading this and it means nothing to you, binaural summation is why its always tough to find a balance between music in one ear and conversation in the other - and also protect your hearing!!!!

The problem is the more audio settings valve provides, the more opportunities people have to cheat. Many things were taken off sv_pure 1 in TF2 since people were using it to do stuff like modify the volume of spy decloaks which allowed you to track them through walls across the map. Same story in CSGO. How many people would've killed to turn off the train noise on Overpass? And that would provide an unfair advantage over people who don't know you can turn it off.

@@CIARUNSITE Ah yes. Because Valve definitely cares about cheaters. Its not like other 3rd party programs have done a better job than valve at that and even CS Source had a better VAC system. Sounds are not as important in CS as in TF2. A LOT of what YOU hear are things no one else hears and its not that hard for valve to make custom "EQ" settings like they have in Black Ops 4. BTW using discord is much better as you can change setting of each and every person to what you want and don't need to turn on attenuation. Personally I keep everyone's volume at 1 on discord and I can still hear them properly if i have loudness Equalization on. I closed my computer and slept through the night with no problems but then I woke to ringing in my ear. Fortunately, my mom is a nurse and told me that I had my volume high on my headset and needed to be off for while. When I got back I decided to lower the volume on my headset, turn the computer volume from 35 to 25 and it made my life better. So be careful of your hearing folks, it’s very important. Also I might try compression on CS and see if it works for me

Because of wearing headphones for long hours to play csgo every single day I got diagnosed with tinnitus ;-;. It's the worst thing to ever happen. There is no treatment for tinnitus. I was lucky enough to get some relief after getting very painful injections in the ear drums every week for 8 weeks. My hearing went down to 60 dB and was hearing high pitch ringing. It's a pain to fall in sleep too xD. It's almost 7 months since I wore any headphones or played loud music. I still hear it ringing when it is quite or cold, but it's a lot better now compared to what it was earlier. My hearing also got normal :). Only time and discipline can heal your tinnitus.

@utkarshranjan79696 жыл бұрын
@@FoxityIV Ofcourse it will get better if you will stop abusing your ears with those headsets. Yes tinnitus can get worse by continuing hearing to loud music. Once you have it, there's no going back. You can prevent it though, don't be in a quiet place,go out sometimes,don't take any kinda stress, keep background sounds going on ( in my case I turn on the fan), listen to nature sounds, cold can sometimes increase the tinnitus a bit so don't worry it's normal, and try not to focus on your T , just keep yourself around people and be busy.....you won't hear shit that way xD. And please don't be scared...even I was depressed and was actually having suicidal thoughts at some point xD. But everything started getting better....and now my T is almost zero. Unfortunately gaming companies, valve included, don't care about hearing loss. Ever notice how they never seem to hire an audio engineer to actually balance the audio out for you? Instead whenever you launch a game without configuring the audio yourself the music is extremely loud compared to the menu sounds and other game sounds? The sad part is in many cases this is the composer's wishes, to have the music so offensively loud that nobody ignores it. You are forced to listen to the music so the composer's work is in more people's minds. Yet Metal Gear Solid V gets a "best score" rating even though the few songs that you're forced to listen to were detractors in that score. It's because the rest of the score and audioscape was finely crafted. The music was intended to work WITH the sound effects and ambient noise of the game. In most cases the music never interfered with talking and throughout the game people rarely had to swap into menus to make the music 10x quieter. While it's possible to believe that Valve has an audio engineer, it's unlikely that he does his job well or is allowed to do his job well. As artists who add music packs will generally have it in their contract that the music needs to default louder than desired.
@SherrifOfNottingham6 жыл бұрын
I'd also like to point out that in compression this is something our ears do naturally, you talked a little about it with the earbuds, but we also do this in a dynamic sense. Watch a horror movie and you'll kind of understand the spacial and mental compression that I'm talking about. Basically our ears will "white noise" out and hear less when there's a lot of loud noise, but more importantly the quieter our surroundings the louder all sounds tend to be. Thus while you're walking around a house with other people at night it feels like the slightest creak in the floorboards can be heard throughout the entire house, but during the day when everybody is up and moving even if it "seems" just as quiet, a creak in the floorboards probably won't even reach your own ears. This is due to both the spacial interference, as the "room noise" increases it actually attenuates and "compresses back" the other noises. But there's also a mental gate as well, even IF everything is just as quiet the situation you're in changes your perception of the sound. Since it's during the day and you're not really trying to be quiet, the sounds are much quieter to your ears, you mentally block them out and ignore them (just like everybody who's fast asleep probably won't get woken up by a creak in the boards across the house). Your brain mentally compresses the sounds anyway, and while the digital compression is essentially not as good as our brains at this losing some spacial data, the mere fact is compressing it before it reaches your ears is the smart thing to do. Your brain loses some of the information that helps locate them, but the good thing is your brain can still read compression really well. If you train on listening with compression on, you'll find yourself still able to do everything a "ear bleeding" person does. I know, every headset I've ever used has a built in compression engine on them and I always turn it on in order to soundwhore.

This is a major issue in an other valve game. Left 4 Dead 2. The infected/zombie sounds are extremely quiet (and partially broken; they don't always play sounds when they should) and gunshots are ear-rapingly loud. Considering you're shooting 90% of the time, you either have to make the overall sound so quiet, that you can't hear the infected or other important sound cues, or you make it loud enough so that you can hear crucial sounds, but you will damage your ears. It's even worse, because in the competetive l4d scene, all forms of mods are disabled, so mods that fix the faulty audio won't work there, meaning have your ears damaged or be an unresponsive teammate because you couldn't hear where the infected are coming from over the endless gunfire. Valve, please fix. Then again, valve hasn't made any updates to left 4 dead, and the last one wasn't well met by the community but valve hasn't made a single comment on it despite backlash, they've abandonned us :(
@cattysplat6 жыл бұрын
I actually got my tinnitus in both ears from playing left 4 dead 2 versus for hundreds of hours during the night whilst being tired. The explosions are even more insanely loud, but it was the plane crash on Dead Air that was so loud i was physically stunned/shell shocked and couldn't take my headphones off whilst the noise wrecked my eardrums. Felt a ton of pain so went to sleep and woke up with ringing ears and constant pain. For someone who loves the sound of silence for deep thought and imagination I was horrified and in utter despair. Soon found out I had Hyperacusis (painful sensitivity to high pitched noises), going to the doctors they saw no physical damage but I avoided all sounds and shut myself in my room, played games in silence hoping the ringing would go away. My focus was so strong then I could pick out every little tone and change in sound my ears made, but that's because its all I could think about, I simply couldn't tune out the sound. Took about 3 months for the hyperacusis to go away, but it took me more months before my brain started to ignore the ringing, but I can say that today I am a completely different person. At the time I was suicidal due to the no hope of the situation, doctors couldn't help me, I feel that the person I was had been ripped away and it was never coming back. I stay up late until exhaustion because the ringing can still keep me awake sometimes, I don't have my old imagination or ability to hold information in my head because of the constant ringing distraction. Always feel in a constant state of tiredness and have to ask people who are quiet or when in loud places to repeat themselves. I can't appreciate quiet silent moments in music/movies/games because I still hear the loud constant never ending sharp sound of ringing, movies like A Quiet Place are literally torture for me. The fact there is no cure just drains all the hope away to just accepting you ruined your hearing and you will never be the same person ever again, all over a few seconds of some stupid sound effects. If you value your health and your sanity, from someone who threw away the gift of silence, please use low bass comfortable headphones at a low volume and do not compromise your hearing for your friends junk microphone/settings.

Yep, the Loudness War. I'm completely against it, as it removes some of the variation in the music which allows certain tones to appear in the "background" of the track, instead of pushing everything into a confusing mess of a foreground. In your example of the Skyrim theme, punching it at the climax allows the climax to be that much more powerful, rather than just a continuation. It's similar to a drop in most songs. You want that to feel much more powerful than the previous segments, but by compressing it you might be left with something potentially even worse than the buildup. Sound level is very important in songs, and removing it does hurt the artistic expression and can detract from the experience. That compression does give a nice sound to the gunshots though. I love the slow decline.
