It's not that big of a stretch, considering how dark some of the things that were in the games got. Mario RPG, Paper Mario, some early concepts (and final inclusions) for Luigi's Mansion, heck, Super Mario Galaxy. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: World of Light starts on something far darker than the Mario movie had in its entire 97 minute runtime, and it gets gritty at times too. Mario isn't just Alice in Wonderland anymore.

Plus I like the film for what it is and I think due to being the first video game movie, that of course it's going to have trouble getting it going. The music was so good that later bought the soundtrack because of it. This movie is what we call "it's so bad it's good". More people are watching the movie because they know it's bad and are curious just to see it to know why it's like that. But in the end, they liked it more than ever.

From what I've been reading once the producers saw the final script they really thought hiring the directors was a bad idea although since they already committed to hiring them they felt they had to let them do what they wanted. Nintendo was to blame for wanting to go dark with the film in the first place. Had they used the script of the Stay Tuned writers we may have got a more faithful movie.

I finished all my homework, made a microwavable pizza, got all my stuffed Mario character plushies to sit with me on the couch, turned on the TV super excited and then... this clusterfuck came on and scarred me for life. I have to wonder why Nintendo demanded a dark and gritty Mario movie. The strength of Mario as a brand is its simplicity and fun that appeals to people of all ages, so the family-friendly fantasy script would've been much better. The movie would probably not get much profit, if any, due to its overblown budget, but at least it wouldn't have been the bizarre mess that we got.

Maybe they lacked confidence in a kid-friendly mario film in the west. Remember, animated films aren't quite seen as a positive light here, often seen as "glorified toy commercials" or "annoying, childish distractions". Or they didn't know how to handle a family-friendly mario movie with America's mindset at the time (almost every film wanted to be Batman at the time)... it's a mystery.

This movie was probably "green lit" in 1990 or even 1991 before Beauty and the Beast debuted that Thanksgiving. That film helped prove that Little Mermaid wasn't a fluke and that there was still a market for family films. A lot of people are focusing on how weird and antagonistic the directors were. But as this video says, it wasn't really their fault. They were known for making weird, edgy stuff. What were the producers expecting? It's like hiring a sushi chef and asking him to make Big Mac combined with KFC chicken strips. What did you expect would happen? I think the bulk of the blame should go to the executives at Nintendo. They hired the production company and they approved the vision of a serious, gritty version of Mario - one of the most kid-friendly properties on the planet. Seriously, what were they thinking?!

The whole mud/coffee story from Rocky's perspective seems like utter damage control. First, he admitted that he just threw mud at an extra without asking. Then he somehow decides that coffee is the only thing that'll make it stick better? Not the water he mentioned was also nearby? I mean, mud + water is still muddy water. You can't say it'd look "less dirty" than a hot cup of coffee. Plus, if the cup of coffee is hot, surely he would have felt it when he picked it up? The cup would have been at least warm. Well coffee and sugar? I kinda am going with the Directors version because nobody was sued. Had there been damage or actual mistreatment that extra would've been rich. There isn't any kinda clause about that in that line of work. I agree 100% sounds like damage control, but at the same time John's version whom he already hates the director, sounds accurate if you didn't really see what happened and kinda played it out in your mind what you'd expect to happen. So just other evidence like no allegations from anyone of wrongdoing and simply others agreeing decades later whom wasn't even on set that day, shows the pure hatred for the directors. But I wanna give Rocky a legitimate possibility, even an arrogant asshole director if burning an extra they should see the danger it can cause right off the bat. Being known as arrogant in hollywood isn't necessarily a career killer, but burning your extras definitely is if you know what I'm saying. but hey if I had to bet money I'd go with mostly John's version, and IRL mix the mud with the coffee and water and dirt and smear it on, did nobody play in the sand as a kid in Florida?!

The nightclub was called the "Boom Boom Room"; Boom Boom being the name of the mini-boss you'd fight at the end of Fortress stages in Super Mario Bros 3! Additionally, if you look at the large display screen/wall of the nightclub, they show various images and collages from different Mario games, if you look close you can see a collage of the stone Bowser head that serves as the entrance to the Valley of Bowser from Super Mario World! :D

Date: May 1993 Scene: Bar that is filled with arcade machines and video game consoles. Mario and Sonic are sitting on opposite sides of the table. Mario is eating spaghetti while Sonic is eating a chili dog while reading a news paper Sonic (shaking his head): …Alright so lets change the subject about me running so fast that I change time and talk about your movie? Only grossed 20 million dollars out of a 48 million dollar budget? Plus what the critics and fans are saying about it…I mean they made two of Bowser's kids into human henchman, pretty sure you in the movie would have killed Yoshi if you tried riding him, the Bertha fish into a woman you had to seduce and instead of a Mushroom Kingdom you get an alternate Brooklyn with fungus around it. Feels out of place when you have an accurate Bob-Omb which looks as it's supposed to… Mario: People didn't understand what needed to be done to bring something to the big screen! They wanted a kiddy game brought to life when we were working on a Rain Man styled masterpiece that was to be another Batman! Sonic: Really? Mario: Yes! It’s me a Mario! People love me! Because I’m Mario. Sonic: Look, I didn't think the movie was that bad after all and I think with everything against it then it could have been worse! There were constant script changes from what I heard, the directors were insufferable, the actors were put into danger and the main duo had to drink to get through shooting! I bet they could have at least make it closer to your games as people loved them enough to want to see this movie. Plus why not keep a light hearted tone; I know you were a horrible pet owner in Donkey Kong but you had there was a cartoon like world that your 3 cartoons gave you! Why not keep to that? Mario: Says you! I heard of the 2 cartoons you are getting, one is getting a more serious tone that can make the new Batman show blush, and the Looney Tunes rip off sister show! You have to understand that you need to make changes and give things darker to adapt something to the bring screen! Tim Burton understood that when he eliminated the camp of Batman and I doubt the Marvel Superheroes would get any success if they weren't ultra serious with a dour tone! Sonic: How about Superman? Christopher Reeve made people a man could fly, and I took a leaf from his book about speed Mario: That is an exception and before people realized how serious and edgy Superheroes need to be now in the 1990s! I heard the comics are changing and so should all the movies. You think a movie based on a game could work if they tried to be faithful to the games? I’m going for a more ‘Batman’ approach to my movie. Sonic: Of course, if I had a movie then I would want it to be light hearted and full of references to my games! I would want a great comedian to play Robotnik. Like perhaps that Jim Carrey guy starring in that pet detective movie next year and going to star in a light hearted movie based on that dark Mask comic! I would want my movie self to look like me and be cool and fun! I would want my buddy Tails to be in the sequel if I get one and you know what Queen's Don't Stop Me Now sounds like a song that would fit so I would want that to be used! Mario (laughing): Listen, you are pretty much a new hot shot with your flashy two games with three more coming out later this year; you have fifteen minutes of fame yet to expire and you have got a lot to learn about the industry. You really think a light hearted Sonic movie could be a success while a dark serious movie starring me. ME. MARIO. The biggest name in the Video Game Industry somehow failed? You think 'Genesis does what Nintendon't' applies here? You think me? ME. MARIO. CAN FAIL!? Don't make me laugh! Your only hope would be to take the same serious tone that my film made with your design to reflect that. Maybe you would need a serious rap song to show people you mean business. Sonic: I think my fans would hate that and if the studio tried that; they would have to change it and delay the movie… Mario: You know what; I am wasting my breath here talking to an idiot who knows nothing how movies work and what the people want! You want to ignore my practical and reasonable advice on how to get ahead if you get your own movie then be my guest! Don't say I didn't want you when you're stupid kids movie fails if it ever gets off the ground! Mark my words; it will be a more financial flop than mine ever could! And you will know that I will always be the best! 27 YEARS LATER... Sonic (smirking while looking at his phone): ...And so we hired this guy called Christian Whitehead who made fangames to make a game as a tribute to all of our fans work, and he's interested in making a second game like Mania and my 30th anniversary games looks good. And I see that you sent another Cease and Desist letter to another fan who made a fangame I see, what are you going to target next? Smash tournaments?... Mario lowers his face into his hands Sonic: While my game quality is debatable at best, I don’t stop running. And by the way, my movie just came out and it already made 218 million, the sequel is in the works and Pikachu congratulated me as it looks as if this is going to blow Detective Pikachu out of the water. By the way how’s Illumination going? Mario wails while crying into his hands

Can I just say Lena is one of the funniest characters ever She was only made to be Koopas love interest. Weird that he had one when his whole schtick is getting with Peach this time Daisy (only this time it seems for power reasons as she has the rock and is royalty) Meanwhile all this time Lena is jealous and thinks Koopa actually likes Daisy over her. “All you care about is her.” Right before this when she sends the cousins to Koopa she tells him she wants him and Koopa brushes her away thinking she meant intimacy when all he cares about is power and the future of his species Also her saying to Daisy “I like this room, don’t you? It used to be my office before I got promoted. Koopa needed me closer.” Implied they had a thing going on when she worked for him😭 And her whole thing of beating Koopa to power and getting electrocuted twice in the end is a really comedic way to go I loved her dress we see in the beginning seemed more princess/queen like then after that she went in tighter slim fitted dresses

Actually, Ricardo is right. Development hell (or development limbo) is a term used to make reference to when a movie, for whatever reason, gets massively delayed during pre-production. It's more about the movie being unable to advance than about it suffering changes, which are not the only thing that can cause the problems, others being budget issues, legal issues (like having to obtain the rights for a certain element before being able to continue), or being unable to find the right people. The Mario Bros movie went through massive changes and was one heck of an ordeal, but it never really "got stuck", so I don't think the term is adequate.

To be fair, the movie was doomed the second an idea of a Mario movie meant to appeal to adults came up. Mario doesn't need to appeal to adults. Adults already like Mario. Mario is fun. Mario is lighthearted. Sure there's conflict, but it's always so hopeful and optimistic and fun that you just get caught up in it no matter what age you are. Trying to make Mario for adults makes no sense. Mario is for kids. But that doesn't matter. Adults like Mario too, because Mario is fun, and even adults like fun. That's how any good kids movie is. Yeah, Toy Story is a kid's movie. It's intended for kids. But EVERYONE likes it. I know more adults that would want to watch Monsters Inc on movie night than I do kids. If they had just made a normal, fun, lighthearted Mario movie with that sort of fantasy tinge and a lot of fun and exploring and a bit of action it could have been decent, but in trying to appeal to a wider audience, they alienated that same audience. If you make a good movie, it doesn't matter who it appeals to. EVERYBODY likes good movies. I don't know why Hollywood still doesn't know this. They still make mass market garbage and give work to hacks like Michael Bay and Zack Snyder (I thought Watchmen was a cool movie, but if you give him creative control over anything but visuals he ruins everything), because visually spectacular films without complicated characters or story sell better in China. But you know what, if it was a GOOD movie, people are going to want to watch it anyway. I want to see Bridge of Spies. I want to see Inside Out. I still haven't seen Up, but I also haven't seen Tora! Tora! Tora!. If you make good movies people will want to see it regardless. I've said that twenty times already.
