Wow. Colecovision version is really good. Better than I expected!

There was a Spy Hunter clone for the Amiga called Major Motion. It had most all the elements of SH; Weapons truck, various weapons such as missiles, oil and smoke, helicopters, cars with tire cutters, turning into a boat, etc. Unfortunately it was also hard as hell.
@wingnut442712 жыл бұрын
it is the Peter Gunn theme. Midway was trying to get rights to use the James bond theme but couldn't secure the rights so they went with the theme from Peter Gunn. Frankly ! I think it was better suited for the game.

(The previous post is for Themaniacnextdoor as well as this post.) The vehicles that you do NOT shoot or try to bump into are the semi trucks, the light blue cars, the red cars, and the motorcycles. There are also boats that do not fire upon you and that you should not hit and you can also shoot and use smoke screens on the enemy boats but I am not sure if you can also use oil slicks on them, too. There are also boats that function like the semi trucks on the water and give you things, too.

An Atari st / Amiga version was released in 1986 or 87 if I remember well. Came under the name "Major Motion". One of the first games I ever tried on my best mate's ST, along with the legendary Karate Kid II, and damn, how I loved it !

Okay, here's what you do in this game. You can shoot the dark blue cars that make spikes come from the wheels and the dark blue limousines as well as use oil slicks and smoke screen on them, too. You can bump the bullet proof dark blue trucks but you can not shoot them and, like the dark blue spike cars and limousines, you can use oil slicks and smoke screens on them, too. You can bump the limousines in the very front or the very back but not on the sides or else the shotgun will fire on you.

Further update: there are actually several ports of the arcade game for the SNES/SFC, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, PS1, N64, Sega Saturn, PS2, Xbox Original, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4/Pro, Xbox One/S/X, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, NDS, N3DS/N2DS, PC, Mac, PSP, PS Vita, and possibly the NSW (Nintendo Switch). This game is also hidden as an Easter Egg in several of the later Midway and Warner Brothers licensed Spy Hunter games and it is also available within LEGO Dimensions, along with the Interceptor being an unlockable vehicle in that game. Strangely enough, the ports of several Midway games are NOT done in LEGO form themselves, but, rather, they are straight up ports of the actual arcade games and they are the only unlockable and playable games that are not done in LEGO form in that game.

The versions I remember from my youth were the Colecovision, C64 and NES and I enjoyed them all. The NES one was pretty darn hard, but I had gotten pretty good at it.

I never was too good at this game But I have managed to get the boat a time or 2. As far as I'm aware the only weapon available is the machine gun since there was no where to dock for a weapons upgrade.

The Colecovision music sounds really good, much better than the nes. To the poster below who i cant reply to thanks to bloody g+, the rumour that you could fly a helicopter or plane werent true, you only get car and boat. And to take down the chopper you needed to get the missile powerup. Back in the day I could play this for hours on one credit, the secret was to get in the boat and take it slow, the enemies movement patterns are predictable, you dont die when you hit something in low gear, and you dont have those bloody cars with the scythes to contend with when going slow. You only need to shift into high gear briefly to avoid the torpedoes/choppers bombs or jump the islands. You can play until you get bored (or accidentally pile into the boathouse and get back in the car). Without the steering wheel and peddle, the game isnt much fun to play, even though mame emulates it perfectly, playing with a joystick/pad just doesn't work very well. I never liked any of the home conversions for the reason above, IT NEEDS the wheel/pedal combo.

Greetings. You may want to add footage from Midway Arcade Treasures for the PSP for this reason: it is worth showing because the graphics are out-of-whack (I think they stretched and squashed the screen at the same time.)

That is true, but the controls were way off. VERY sensitive, so a quick tap either direction sends you flying off the road. It was paired up with Super Sprint, which was a little better, but again, imperfect control. About the only good thing about it was that I got it new in box and sealed. I know how bad MK Advance was, and also the port of R-Type III for the GBA.
@pjgathergood69877 жыл бұрын
The BBC version was always a good port of this game (and that's on a system, coming from a Beeb fan, that had it's share of pretty dire ports), and looking at the versions on other systems, it actually looks like one of the best! (BTW, I had two different releases of SH on the Beeb, but I've never seen that opening with the digitised speech before). Although more of an adventure game fan, I used to play Spy Hunter for some hours, and got very far on it (until things kinda just looped around). It also had a feature where a function key could be pressed to "stretch" the graphics to fill the full screen.
@scottbreon94485 жыл бұрын
I agree that there were a lot of dire ports on the beeb (and a number of unofficial clones) However, it really had some nice clones of Galaxian and Galaga for example.
@paxhumana201511 жыл бұрын
Graphically, the GBA version is pretty spot-on to the arcade. The problem was that the people at Midway were a bunch of lazy fucks and that they didn't bother to even put in the music or all of the arcade special effects to the game. While I don't know how well that the controls handled, at least you can be thankful that the GBA version of Spy Hunter was not one of the worse ones, like, say for the Commodore 64 or ColecoVision, and you can also be thankful that it is not Mortal Kombat Advance!
@scottbreon94485 жыл бұрын
I've played nearly all the versions, and while I loved the C64 port as a kid, it hasn't really aged all that well (although the gameplay is still pretty decent). Kind of surprised that there was no MSX port.

A pity gameplay in the original Arcade version is not shown the way it is meant to be: the most funny aspect of the game was ramming opponent cars from the side so they crashed into the green areas. Also you did not dock with your truck in the end to refill fuel & ammo.

You have to go for the Dark blue cars. .... That's pretty much it ! avoid obstacles, traps, bombs, tire slashers, Just any random attack. like any classic game of the day the goal was to get the highest score.

Oh, and wingnut4427 pretty much summed up everything else, too. You just need to avoid the trees, rocks, mud puddles, and, like in real life, please drive carefully on icy roads, too. Say, wingnut4427, would you know anything about attacking the enemies that are on the water and on the sky because I never reached the point in the game where I ever attacked enemies in the sky but I do know that there ARE sky parts to Spy Hunter, at least on the NES version, anyway. Am I wrong, sir or madam?
@paxhumana201511 жыл бұрын
Hey, the NES port wasn't a bad one. Sure, it didn't look EXACTLY like the arcade and PS1/N64/SNES/SFC/Genesis/Mega Drive/PS2/Xbox/GameCube/Wii/XBox360/PS3/PC/Mac ports of the arcade game, but I, for one, actually LOVED how well the controls worked in comparison to the arcade version and its 15 other actual arcade game emulations on the aforementioned video game consoles, so you can go politely copulate yourself AND the elitist high horse that you rode in on, jackson torres! Have a nice life!
@paxhumana201511 жыл бұрын
Finally, Themaniacnextdoor, I am not sure how you take down the helicopter but I am sure that someone else can give you that information, too. Oh, and I think that, way later on the game, that you can also take to the sky in an airplane or helicopter but I have never reached THAT far into the game myself. Perhaps if someone was a better player than myself in the game, they could give you the specific information if you were to go ask them about it nicely, too? What do you have to lose, sir?
@paxhumana201511 жыл бұрын
The GBC one wasn't a bad one but they still could have made it better, OuroborosChoked. However, as for my two bits about the GBA version of the game, please read my posts to DanZero77, okay? You are welcome.
