Fun fact: This is the only licensed game developed my Shigeru Miyamoto. Fun fact 2: Miyamoto wanted to develop a Popeye game as his first project for Nintendo, but they had difficulty getting the rights from King Features Syndicate. The result is Miyamoto created Donkey Kong.

I don't know if this glitch happens in any of the other versions, but in the C64 version, when you hit Bluto (Brutus) while in spinach mode, and he goes flying across the screen, if you hit the punching bag which releases the bucket, and time it perfectly so that it lands on his head, it'll freeze him in place but in that animation. Bluto is no longer a threat for the remainder of that level (or life, Popeye can still fail by not catching all the hearts in time, or get hit by a bottle)
@rudolphg769 жыл бұрын
I used to have the NES version. But thanks for putting up the Odyssey 2 version. I will now have nightmares! Apparently, a small albino is being hunted by the pink Predator from above throwing shit at him, while a giant green alien from below is trying to kill him. HIs only hope is to eat one of the aliens detached balls. And when he does, the alien flies around the screen and gives out a horrible shrieking sound. I mean how would you like it if someone ate one of your balls? Yep. Nightmares.

Missing background music aside, this is once again an excellent arcade conversion from Parker Brothers for the TI-99/4A and holds it's own handily among the other same-generation machines. Milton Bradley may be much more closely associated with the 4A, but with Popeye, Frogger, QBert (easily the best home-computer conversion at the time) and the recently released Tutankham, it was Parker Brothers who created the most compelling arcade-based titles for the TI-99. Considering the hardware though, the Odyssey2 port must have been a real labour of love. and the programmer actually pulled it off (even including the spinach theme!)! Yhay ois no small feat on such limited hardware. Huge Kudos!

Strange fact: The villain in the arcade game is identified as Brutus, the version of Bluto who exists because of poor legal research. (Why is Bluto sometimes Brutus? Well, King Features, the comics syndicate with the rights to Popeye, believed *incorrectly* that they didn't own Bluto. He was a villain from E. C. Segar's comic strip, but a rather minor and obscure one, elevated to major status only by Fleischer Studios' cartoon shorts, which made him Popeye's recurring archnemesis in endless damsel-in-distress plots. King Features, who I guess had a lazy legal department, mistakenly thought the Fleischers had invented Bluto entirely, and came up with "Brutus" as a substitute character, who appeared under that name in the cartoons made for TV in the Sixties and after. And in this game.)
@WindowshadeCure5 жыл бұрын

Pretty clear that the Apple II port was a homebrew. But why the hell didn't it have an official Popeye release? Or Donkey Jr., for that matter, when the Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. ports were done so well?!?! 🤔

Happy birthday man. I'm just curious if for some of the C64 ports if you tried seeing how they ran when setting the emulator to NTSC mode? Having a copy of Ms. Pac-Man on cartridge, and Dig-Dug, Jumpman Junior, and Pac-Man on floppy disk I can say they run considerably faster on my NTSC Commodore 128 and 64.

Wow, they didn't even TRY on the Odyssey2. The Atari 2600 version however actually looks pretty good!
