Considering the limitations of the atari 2600 hardware its a very impressive port. It actually plays better than either the Apple or Atari 800 ports which have more advanced hardware. Apple I understand, but Atari 800?

The ZX spectrum 48K has a 1-bit beeper. To produce a waveform involves the CPU rapidly turning on/off the beeper. It is CPU intensive, and so this is one of the reasons this sucks so bad. Even the original IBM PC (8088 @ 4.77 Mhz) has a dedicated timer chip (the PIT) connected to a speaker so tones can be generated with very little CPU overhead. The spectrum has to work even to produce a tone.

I've seen the original mostly at bars. There's actually a bar/old school arcade (hipster central!) by me which has an original Tapper machine, along with a spot to place your beers. Root beer Tapper on the other hands from what I recall, was mostly at all ages places.

GHS This is one instance in which you placed the Atari 2600 version below the Spectrum and the Apple. the graphics on the 2600 are pretty damn good for a system of it's limitations. And the sound/music on the 2600 is AWESOME - almost up there with the arcade.

This is one of my favorite games; I was lucky to have played the arcade version, but can't remember where. I know you're just demonstrating the different versions, but you don't get to show people how to catch the empty glasses by running up to them. I love how it looks like the drink goes up the bartender's nose in the bonus level in the BBC Micro version.

How come the C64 version is so smooth compared to the others? Is that an emulator improvement? Or was the original that smooth too? Seems a bit too smooth. I grew up with a ZX Spectrum. I now feel terribly sorry for my childhood.

C-64 had graphical sprites in hardware and the video hardware was specifically created to make game programming easier. In fact C-64 was originally designed as a game console.
