Neo Contra Video Review

Gaming Pastime reviews Neo Contra for the PlayStation 2. While it maintains the core Contra structure, it still manages to deviate from the formula.
Developed and published by Konami, Neo Contra was released for the PlayStation 2 in October, 2004 (NA). You play as Bill Rizer who has been sent in to combat the "Neo Contra", an organization out to destroy structured society. Neo Contra uses the isometric/top-down camera angle that and it seems to be the reason for all of the backlash.

I seem to be in the minority of people who really like this game, to the point where I put in a lot of hours to beat the game and get the best ending without using cheats or unlocks. I found the gameplay to be more satisfying than Shattered Soldier (although that one was pretty fun too, if more frustrating), there is just something about blowing up huge mobs of grunts with a grenade or the spread shot.

Try GIJOE Rise of Cobra, it's based on Neo Contra, but they aded a cover system. There's even a Contra C logo right in the background of one of the main menu's, it's the Snow based levels. It's got terrible dialogue but you can just mute it, plus it has unlockable character and that's fun.

It's not just you pal. Beating this game legit is one of my greatest gaming accomplishments. Also the Type D? anti air is so overpowered, I call it "God's Thumb".

This game is getting hard to find complete in good shape. All I find are discs and ex rental copies. I think most copies were sent straight to rental stores back in the day.

Neo Contra was the first Contra I ever played and it's one of my favourite too along with Shattered Soldier

This is my fave contra game of all time and i played the arcade and NES games. You get to load your weapons before each level. Here's hoping Rogue Corps is good. It already looks better. Gonna download the demo today and play it.

The biggest problem I have with this game is that there’s no way (that I know of) to play as a twin stick shooter, like robotron or total carnage. I mean, it would have been great, the second stick is right there! Other than that, and the cheap camera angle deaths you mentioned, the game is pretty good.

M2 needs to release a second Contra Anniversary Collection and here are list Contra: Shattered Soldier, Neo Contra, Contra 4, Contra ReBirth, Contra: The Alien Wars for gameboy and gameboy Advance, and Hard Corps: Uprising.

It was a good game and a different but satisfying followup tp shattered soldier. It is one of the easier games but you have a different camera angle, no more jump, and enemies can surround you 360. Was fun new. Definitely way way easier then shattered soldier but that’s only for us hardcore gamers that can handle it.

Imagine if Contra 3 took place entirely in mode 7 stages. That's basically this game in a nutshell. And yet people rag on 3 for having even 2 of them. Just doesn't make sense to me.

In this game if you get Katana trust me you will never turn back agaist that katana. It so over power, you can defeat a boss (short rage) with 2 or 4 hit only

If you like Neo Contra might I suggest you try Halo Spartan Assault or if you really like the idea and want to play something really challenging try GIJOE Rise of Cobra...

the only thing I absolutely love about this game, is that amazing intro, its kinda me dream to one day see a G.I. Joe animated series go Post Apocalypse like this games setting.

Ah i have fond memories of this game. I still remember the day my dad brought this game home with him randomly one day and it became one of me and my little brothers favorite game when we were kids. This was the very first and last contra game I ever played I had no idea what contra was but I sure as fuck loved this game lol nothing like being a dumb 10 year old who can barely beat the game on normal lol

Soooooo... not gonna talk about the... "controversial" alien design choices in this game? About how some of them look way too similar to certain pieces of human anatomy? Or how you fight a literal baby coming out of a giant vagina?????? Because that was always the thing that made me not like playing this game: not the gameplay, but the just plain weird and frankly perverted design choices made.
