Hey guys! The artist that has been drawing the amazing work seen in these Onimusha thumbnails has a youtube channel and I'd love it if you gave it a look. I think a lot of us know what it's like getting a YT channel off the ground and this guy's art deserves way more eyes on it. Thanks a lot everyone! It’s disappointing they still aren’t considering making a sequel for Onimusha due to the poor sales of the warlords remaster, imagine the possibilities if they used the RE engine, a legit survival horror/action samurai vs. demons game.
@asiamatron

Yeah I was just thinking about how cool it would be to get a new Onimusha with the RE engine, could be something special. A new Onimusha and Dragon's Dogma 2 would be nice.
@STRING3R
@STRING3R 3 жыл бұрын
As much as I'd like another Onimusha I don't think it really needs a sequel honestly. Dawn of Dreams had a pretty closed and conclusive ending to the series, thats probably why they haven't made another one.
@zeroattentiongaming820
@zeroattentiongaming820 3 жыл бұрын
@@asiamatron Well Dragon's Dogma 2 is still a real possibility as Itsuno was given the choice between it and DMC 5 when he approached the Capcom higher ups about them. He chose to do DMC 5 first as he felt he owed it to the fanbase after so many years. Everything I've seen suggested that it wasn't a one or the other choice, just that he chose to finish DMC properly first. His loyalty to his fans aside, Dragon's Dogma was his baby. The game he always wanted to make. I'm certain he will be doing a sequel if that is still on the table with the higher ups. I'm not happy that Onimusha died again but I get it. However I see no reason they would be against DD2 when they were supportive of it before DMC 5 started development. If anything, Itsuno's insane success both critically and commercially with DMC 5 should have them more supportive of him making a passion project they were already willing to fund.

@@STRING3R Dawn of Dreams was meant to be a new start, hence the Japanese title Shin Onimusha translating to New Ogre Warrior rather than being called Onimusha 4. Along with the massively expanded gameplay, it acted as an epilogue to the original series that started something new. It never got a sequel because the series, despite increasingly strong critical reception with each title did worse commercially each time. Warlords was the first ps2 title to break 2 million sales, a very high benchmark to meet and each sequel sold less and less. They were already going out on a limb with DoD as an attempt to revitalize the series commercially. They tried to keep the series alive well past what most companies would've but just like with Warlords HD it just wasn't selling well enough to warrant that treatment any further. Capcom had repeatedly discussed reviving the series internally for years before they actually attempted it with Warlords HD. They know how dedicated the fans are and how legendary the series was in its own time. They wanted to bring it back for a long time but the usual HD port way of testing the waters Capcom employs just didn't pan out.

An absolute gem of a game. The movie-like intro is so outstanding, it’s one of the few video game moments I would share with my non video game friends and family. If only Jean Reneau had voiced the English dialogue, it would have put the game over the top. I tried so hard to perfect the timing on the counters and the 10-swing in Demon form. I remember spending hours in the Dark realm challenge area, having a blast. Onimusha 3 is an all time great.

I recall back when I worked in a gaming store, this was a couple of years after the Oni 3's release, we had a big tv behind the counter that we were supposed to use to display whatever was new that week. There was one week where whatever we were promoting sold so well that we didn't have a copy in the shop to have running behind us. So I recommended playing Oni 3 because the intro was so awesome. That week we completely sold out of every new and 2nd hand copy of the game.

I was 10 y/old the first time I saw anything about Onimusha, this was in 2006, I remember walking through a mall with who was my friend back then while his mom was at the beauty salon getting her hair done, and we stopped at this videogame store, and they always had videogame trailers displayed on tv or just games running on the background, one of them was the intro of Onimusha 3, my friend and I would stop at the entrance staring and watching the entire video, never got to see the name of the game, but it stuck with me. Eventually I found out the name of the game, but got to play them in 2020, absolute masterpieces.

Honestly my favorite out of the Underrated Quadrilogy...Yes it's a Quadrilogy not a Trilogy because Dawn of dreams IS infact a direct sequel to Onimusha 3 and not a spin-off. While I enjoyed all of the games,This specific game just feels right at home and not so overblown and too much Quantity filled like Onimusha 4 while also not too less like the previous entrie This Game just feels right and balanced with the right amount of content from start to finish and if anything i'd say this is the most Quality Onimusha game out of the Quadrilogy. Here's hoping you get to cover Dawn of Dreams too....It did so many interesting stuff for its time and really deserved to said to many.

It's cool that they touched on the events at Honouji Temple. As someone who has been reading as much samurai history and lore as I can, I find the lack of information on what transpired to be the ultimate tease. Akechi Mitsuhide (the historical figure Samonosuke is based on) turned on Oda for an unknown reason; he killed the young page Ranmaru, who really did try to defend Nobunaga, but was defeated in combat. It's a still unsolved mystery as to why Akechi went on this warpath, so it's cool to see Onimusha touch on this moment in military history.

This game on my CRT over component looks jaw dropping after all these years. I know that this isn't a survival horror but if you enjoyed Onimusha so much you may really want to check out Genji Dawn of the Samurai, it's very similar to Onimusha 2. And about the PC port looking worse, sometimes older PC games relied on special hardware to make certain effects that may be missing on modern GPUs (Probably the most known example is PhysX), and that's starting to be very evident as years come by, hopefully someday we get emulation of some sort for that kind of stuff.

Warlords is by far the easiest to do it in, which I believe was a balance choice with the introduction of the chain Issen in 2. Being able to Issen as easily in 2 and 3 combined with the chain mechanic would've been extremely overpowered. Issen offers significantly more killing potential in 2 and 3, so was made harder to execute to balance that in all likelihood. Personally I always found it to be way too overpowered in 2 as I found it relatively simple compared to 3 and chain killing entire rooms was far too easy to do with Jubei. That's not to say I took issue with it, love doing it but it was way too easy to clear entire rooms with what was meant to be a skill based mechanic. 3 feels just right in terms of execution difficulty compared to killing potential imo. Warlord's easier single Issen was balanced fine due to the limitation, 2's was too overpowered, 3 balanced it back out again. Then DoD let you go all "Magic chain Issen go Slash, Slash, Slash, Slash, Slash, Slash, Slash, Slash" whenever you had the meter for it lol. Though just a minor correction, you don't need an input to use Oni form if you can't map it. Dying with a full purple meter makes you ressurect and transform automatically. Not exactly ideal, but still a reason to keep your meter full even if you can't transform at will.

Indeed it's a good thing onimusha ended on a good note. As I prefer the original, I remember as a young teen finding this pretty cool when it came out. And it's still a paling how most people slept on this. Also, is it interesting that this is basicly the early idea of Devil May Cry? Zombies and swords.

Great review as always appreciate all the details and angles you provide on your videos man. I decided to replay O1 and this a few months ago and add that one of the biggest QOL improvements from O1 were the dynamic camera angles during fight areas. Can't remember if you mentioned this or not or if it was fixed in O2, but fighting enemies in transitional spots on fixed camera angles were very annoying in O1and it was great to see that it was rectified here.

That definitely can be an issue in games with fixed perspectives and even more so in action games with fixed perspectives. It never bothered me too much, but I could totally see it being an issue for some. I've always been willing to give up gameplay function for solid immersion.

Have you played “Sekiro Shadows Die Twice”?? That would be the closest type of game style that you may be speaking of. Sekiro is awesome too, it takes me back to the days when I played the whole Onimusha Series and the Tenchu Series, which Sekiro feels like both games combined into one, with a little bit of Dark Souls.

@@Aibadenshi- That’s cool, and now I see what you meant, and although Sekiro was an awesome game based on an ancient period of Japan which resembled the Feudal Era, and precision sword fighting was a main selling point of the entire game, with the enemies getting more and more skilled as you progressed further on throughout the vast world of the game. It really didn’t have weapon and armor variety, the Katana that was given to you by the Divine Heir was basically your only main weapon, even though you still did have the Prosthetic Tool, Shinobi gadgets and side weapons here and there at your disposal, we still could have had the ability to obtain new weapons and train with them and develop new fighting styles with them, along with different types of garbs and armor would have been cool to have too. Despite the lack of main weapon and armor variety, I still loved Sekiro. It took me back to the times of when and how I played the entire Onimusha and Tenchu franchises, and overall gave me a sense of this feels familiar and it’s a good thing.

Love this game series. I still think the intro to this game is still one of if not the best intro to a game. It makes you think if Capcom will remaster or remake the rest of the Onimusha games as they did a few years ago with the first game. Great video

I hope they do remaster this one, but honestly I don't think they will. The first remaster didn't sell well enough sadly. We'll just have to enjoy the original and hope one day new game consoles will upscale old games really well. I think that's the closest we'll get.

I loved this game jacques western look and his unique flail weapons are super fking cool. No fks given for story in an action man. Do u think ds1 told any. story NO!! It an Action game who give a fk about story. Jaques character and weapon design is very unique and awesome i love it. I dnt really like samurai aesthetic so i dnt really like the Japanese character. I name only this game where a main protagonist weapon is a chain flail whip thingy. How many game can you count that does something similar to this? A few perhaps. Now count how many games are out where main protagonist had a sword.. Billions probably.

An absolute blast of a game and that intro was so awesome, I recorded it on my old phone to rewatch it on the go, or before bed. I remember being at the story and getting shocked, about seeing Jean Reno on the cover. Playing as Jacques, Heihachi and Michelle felt fresh and amazing and having seven weapons asSamanosuke, old and new was a power trip. And taking Nobunaga's sword in the final battle, was hype as hell! Miss this game, have the disc & memory card, but my brother's got to keep the ps2 after I moved out. 🎮

In regard to pronouncing foreign words correctly. I know, it is kind of a tradition to horribly mutilate any non-English names and words in KZbin videos by American and mostly English KZbinrs. Personally, I always find that really lazy and disrespectful. Especially considering that it takes you maybe thirty seconds to listen to a correct pronunciation, or at least find a written example for how a word is pronounced. To be honest, it drives me a bit nuts how few English-Speaking creators are willing to spend any amount of energy into not sounding like completely uneducated buffoons. As a comicbook fan, that was actually the first time it really stated to irk me. Back in the 80s and 90s, it was understandable and even whimsical to have European characters speak their own supposed language very broken, but after the onset of the internet this just became annoying. Any comic that sells at least halfway decent has a few European fans who could help with translations, and yet a lot of the times Europeans and Asians still read as if they are not capable of speaking their own language. In the past I've offered to translate stuff for free and with no need to credit me to several indie comics creators I became acquainted with on social media and not one of them ever accepted. Again, I don't think this is funny or a cool tradition, I think it speaks of a laissez-faire attitude that often doesn't gel with the care those same creators put into other aspects of their work.

This is also my favorite game in the series (also, the first one I played/completed in the series). It was what got me to pick up the prior games (including Blade Warriors). I'm biased as hell, sure, but Oni3 was super fun from start to finish, and I'll always sing its praises (and play it now and again, even this many years later, lol) The only game that seems to match its creativity, pomp, circumstance, attitude, and design philosophy, oddly enough was DMC5, IMHO. So, to me at least, we did at least get one more CAPCOM game just like Oni3 (in all but mechanics), but it sure took a hell of a long time to happen.

I've got the remaster of the first game installed on my PS4, so maybe I'll get into that over the holidays. And, holy shiiiiit, the games look amazing with your setup! Do you do Let's Plays with this kind of setup? I'd be so down to watch a LP with this PS2 fidelity.

This game is so, so good. I admit, this one did throw me off when I first tried it, coming straight off of Onimusha 2 (Modern day France?! Jean Reno?! Wha?!) but after my initial misgivings, I found what is, in my opinion, one of the most enjoyable action games on PS2, and it *really* needs to be on modern platforms. And even though the game has standard analogue controls on the left stick, if you use the D-Pad instead, it'll use tank controls. They were thinking about you when they designed this one, Jared ;D

This was my first ever PS2 game, and one of the first games I remember playing. I was 6 at the time, and I remember being really shocked at how violent the game was, but at the same time, the whole opening was so cool that I couldn't just stop playing (to be fair, most of my childhood was playing and watching things that were aimed at a somewhat older audience and arguably too violent for a child). I couldn't understand a fraction of whatever was going on, because at the time, I had no knowledge of a single word of english, japanese OR french. That also meant I had no idea of what "load game" meant, so I kept restarting the game every single time. Unsurprisingly, I never advanced much, but dang, I played this game a LOT anyways

This is the only game I played at the time and I fell in love with it. It was only because I saw Jean in the cover and I was like "Hey! That Godzilla guy!" LOL! Little did I know I unlock a fun game experience. I can imagine if it does get a remake or another game it would be more of what they did with Resident Evil since that formula seems to work. It would be interesting to see sword mechanics using the RE engine.

This game’s structure reminds me of RE:Revelations, except the pacing isn’t completely ruined when you switch between characters. That being said I do actually enjoy Revelations, even though I’ve only finished it twice because the final boss is completely bull, in my opinion at least. Edit: by the way, this complaint comes from the guy who taught himself to knife a Scagdead to death. So I feel I have the right to complain about the final boss’s difficulty.

I have beaten Onimusha 2 more times than 3 due to exploring different story arcs; but I have always preferred this one, though some of the training stages are extremely frustrating with 3. I will defend Homecoming til the day I die. Edit: No, properly pronouncing foreign words doesn't make you sound like an ass. It makes you sound knowledgeable of that language. It's not the destination that matters the most, but the journey to get there. Honestly if we got a new Onimusha game it'd probably be like Nioh.

Onimusha 3 is definately one of the bests of its time, and i remember trying to change my hair back then to try looking a bit like Samanosuke. Bro it didnt turn out good, i looked very funny and i had a weird teenager moustache HAHAHA But fuck that, what matters is that i had tons of fun with this game, and im pretty sure its one of the games ill always try to find an excuse to visit, if only just to rewatch that kickass intro and beat some asses with Jean Jacques Belmont HAHAH GREAT video as always, im really surprised with some info here about the production of that intro, they were really going for it with this one huh? O_o deyum. I never played this spin off smash one as well, despite finding very fun to see videos on it with people controlling zero; kinda curious to hear your take on it.

Man....I fucking love onimusha. I found all 3 games in a bargain bin as a kid. My mom could not afford to buy me many games, so bargain bin was essentially the top shelf for me. I remember picking all 3 of them up for about 15 bucks each, expecting some basic hack and slash samurai game I could kill time with. They quickly became some of my fave games on the system and I still own my original copies to this day. They had no business being in that bin, but boy I am glad they were. Now we just need the rest of them on steam.
