The 2000s was just a really solid era for design in general, mostly because the people who grew up with computers and played with them for design started to have enough seniority to have creative say. I think it wasn't just the optimism towards the future, it was also because there was finally a workforce that knew how to work with a new generation of tools. I feel like it might be why a lot of Y2K has a retrofuture look that hearkens back to the "Googie" design trends of the 60's and 70's - that was the general perception of what the future looked like when they were growing up. With the technology they had, they could make it real... or, failing that, at least something that looked like it.

0:24 There was a lot more wars and poverty in the late 90s/early 2000s. I got a Japanese Dreamcast in December 1998. The Serbia vs. Kosovo war was red hot at the time, Iraq tension was building up, 2nd Chechen war around the corner, Karabakh, and by the time I got Blue Stinger on my DC in the mail, the US and NATO were well into their Serbia bombing campaign. I also remember documentaries about how poor Russia, Romania, China, Africa, etc. were compared to today. A quite dreary time on the world stage, but the entertainment was top notch. America, Western Europe and Japan had it really good though. I remember a Serbian guy I used to talk about games with way back in the mid 2000s. He who was stuck in the crossfire of the Kosovo war, and somehow he was rich enough to have a PS1 and a copy of Exhumed (PowerSlave) and Tomb Raider in the basement of his favela-like shanty house, which barely had anything, while bombs were going off. Barely any Serbs had that stuff. The entertainment helped him through the really tough times though.

Context about Cool Cool Toon's developer. The game was developed and released by the original SNK in 2000, being one of their last works they made before they went bankrupt for multiple reasons. Check out part 2 of Thorgi Arcade's KOF retrospective for more info. Although we will never get a sequel, references to it can be found in various SNK games, notably Neo Geo Battle Coliseum in one of the stages.

I've had a burned copy of Cool Cool Toon for years but always struggled with the language barrier. I was finally able to do my first run tonight with the english translation, and what a difference it made. Pan is right though, the game is absolutely brutal toward the end on normal difficulty. Not because of the actual difficulty itself, but rather the style of gameplay needing such fast and precise stick movement that most controllers don't accommodate. I had to turn it to easy mode for the last 3 songs, and I've beaten Elite Beat Agents on the hardest difficulty. Still, very fun game overall.
