Watching people play video games is pretty much the same as watching people play sports. Neither of the viewers are actually playing the game but find it entertaining to watch other people play. It's even more entertaining the harder the challenge is-just like sports. Yet somehow people can't wrap their minds around that similarity.

Zero The Bloodedge When i was younger i never could beat metroid prime. I didnt know what the endings were and it drove me crazy! I saw an LP of metroid prime and finally saw the ending and felt such closure. Some people don't know how exciting it can be to watch someone complete a full journey and even do the harder difficulties that you could never do.

+ReachSkyla I only own a PC now for gaming. And since I like to upgrade my PC every 4-6 month a year, I spend it on those parts. Instead of buying any consoles like PS4 or Xbox One. So when it comes to console only exclusives, since I don't own any consoles I like to enjoy watching LPs go through the game(s) I take interest in seeing. But when it comes to just pure story like "The Last of Us", I tend to watch whole movie cut scenes with included game play needed to bridge each cut scene. Anyone can experience any full game through many 'Let's Player(s)" videos.

Thats the problem though. This was not what i was looking for.... I hate 95 % of the lets players i see in my recommendations every one of them makes there voice sound like they just bit there tongue and they get extremely loud for no apparent thing... And worstly they are not themselves and think that they have to be and are funny. You should always be yourself. That is why I wanted this episode to be funny and to make fun of for example the fact that every random thing Pewdieguy does gets him a mountain if money... and that was just missing

Edward Ford If you really want to do lets plays, then do it. But in my opinion the quality of footage is highly important...i would even say Sound is more important than video. If your mic. is bareable and the footage is not too bad, then do lets plays if you want. I suggest you get a better computer first, then you can play games on your own or record things like montages or in general things without sound. If you get a new mic. and are older than 16, then do lets plays if you are still interested, but never expect to be succesful.

I don't think Let's Playing is easy as people want to assume it is. It requires charisma and maintaining an e-celebrity status, in which the entire job depends on, and this involves a lot of pressure that's not stable at all. I cannot imagine that as a full time job, because I doubt it's "just playing video games" 24/7, some of it is acting, a lot of it is editing, and a HUGE chunk of it is maintaining a presence and competing with other LPers who also happen to be friends/rivals. And let's not forget streaming, doing all of this live and being the source for so much shit LPers get as a result of them fucking up. With that being said, I'll be the first to admit I tend to gravitate towards LPers still in the "I do it for fun" mentality such as Cr1tikal. Guy actually donates all his earnings. Holy shit he's amazing to not fall to temptation. I can't stand rip-off LPers, since to me it's the equivalent of "Check out muh mixtape bruh!" The guys who do it for fun learn for themselves what people like and can be original where people who do things by the book are so blatant about being in it for themselves it takes away any potential charm they have, hard work or not, and with LPs they need to be able to have that charm to even be appealing.

No, lets plays are a step DOWN from video walkthroughs. Video walkthroughs actually help you be better at a game by teaching you things, lets players teach you what not to do by doing everything wrong while screaming at the tv just because they're pretty shit at games or are just faking it so they can scream and up their views. Don't forget to like and subscribe!

+Andy Semple i said the exact same thing in my head when he claimed it to be a step up. I remember when walkthroughs were some of the only gameplay on sites like youtube, which worked because it helped players who were stuck in the game. Now, its really popular to just play the game for the first time on stream/video, so your playthrough wont help the player. Its alot harder to find decent walkthroughs these days because of the over-saturation of lets plays. He males point about video editing, which certainly is more difficult than recording, but editing a lets play video is just a boring process, not a hard one. It also depends on your recording sessions, and what kind of commentary you are trying to provide. Im not saying these people have no right to make money off of it, no all the money to them, but not power because they are whats causing actual helpful walkthroughs to be overshadowed. There is also inherent differences between things like lets plays and sports commentary. With sports commentary, most of the people commentating were pro sports players at one point, which is harder than being good at a video game, no matter what an LPer claims. On top of that, they have to know their shit, and provide insightful commentary on the sport while its playing. There is quality control, thats why sports commentators deserve more respect, because they have to be good at their job. WIth LPers, no ones there to take you offline when you suck at your job. You can be the worst LPer in the world, and still make money. As long as you have the right equipment(capture card, mic, editing software and an internet connection) you can become an LPer anytime you want. The same cant be said with professional sports commentators. I would almost go as far as to say that 1/100 LPers actually have insightful commentary, but thats just based on my experience. Despite it being a job to them, its rare that any LPer actually shows any regards to professionalism. At least with old walkthrough, they required more effort to actually show people where items were, or the best way to go about beating a boss. Now, its just gameplay and off the cuff commentary. I respect LPers who hold themselves to a standard, but thats rare i find

+Andy Semple Actually what you are talking about is a Guide, not a Walkthrough. A Walkthrough is entertainment for those interested in the contents of the game. A Let's Play is entertainment for those who are more interested in seeing reactions and opinions on the game. They may not care as much for the contents of the game itself. A Guide is as you described, educational tips like the game manuals sold in stores for people stuck or curious about content they missed or cannot overcome. There are plenty of walkthroughs with players that have no interest in showing you the best way, and just want to crap out the game content as soon as possible so people hyped about the game will come find their channel.
@arturiaemiya3877
@arturiaemiya3877 8 жыл бұрын
most walkthroughs(or at least, old walkthroughs) could be considered guides(even the term walkthrough comes from the fact that they walk you through a game, step by step), but they were still called walkthroughs. Sure, there always were bad walkthroughs, but a good amount of them were actually helpful. I understand that LPs are meant for a different kind of audience, people who are interested in personalities rather than the game, but i do think that they often overshadow(mainly because of the larger audience) good walkthrough/guides.
@TheMisterJinglez
@TheMisterJinglez 8 жыл бұрын
Arturia Emiya So then what would you call videos that aim to tell you the story rather than guide you through them easily? Because I know if I search for a "Walkthrough", that is what I am going to get.
@arturiaemiya3877
@arturiaemiya3877 8 жыл бұрын
that is a playthrough, playthroughs exist just to show the player the game. At least thats what i would call it, granted, it is my opinion LPs are content meant to entertain through the LPers personality Playthroughs are meant to show the viewer the game, not necessarily methods of being great at the game, but just showcasing the game Walkthroughs/guides are meant to show players how its done, so to speak. Show them how to do things better(like, how to solve a puzzle in an adventure game, or some good ways of taking on bosses, or where some hidden items are) Granted, you can have hybrids. Like, an LPer could also be showcasing the whole game rather than just using the game as a catalyst for reactions. A walkthrough can also have a persons personality shine through, and so on and so forth. I guess the reason why i define these things this way is because i think definitions are important. I dont think its fair to people who do any of these types of videos to mislabel them. It wouldnt be fair to an LPer to say they are making guide videos, and the same can be said for people that do guide videos/walkthroughs. Yes, its petty and trivial in the grand scheme of things, but, arent games also trivial in the grand scheme of things. Feel free to disagree, this is my opinion, and of course i will stick by it, but i can also see why one might disagree with me.

Biggsy IsGod Like you can't play pirate games on flashed console right.... stop saying it like pirated versions exists only on PC ffs. I find it a lot worse when someone flashes their console, pirate the game and pay monthly for some kind of shit gold service with which you can then play the game online with pirated version. Most of the pirated games on PC can't be played online _(like BF3, BF4 and others which needs to be vertified via official central servers in order to play multiplayer)._ Btw. I'm not defending pirating in any way.

The lets play movement has only been super popular for like two-three years and its already massively oversaturated. Hell even individual games have to many lets players focusing solely on them like Fifa, COD and certain indie horror games. The problem is that there are far too many lets players who are not only not good at the games they play but also not really funny. I understand editing isn't a work in a park but all they're doing is taking recorded footage and fitting the audio with it, occasionally adding sound effects and graphics... Not really that hard. Hell some gamers just film themselves playing the game (some guys like DSP are so retarded they film the screen they're playing on)

I have no problems with let's plays, but I think it's kinda sad how the other channels like Corridor digital who put alot more effort into their videos (you can not deny this) get less rewarded. Sure Corridor digital for example still has their 2+ mio views on every video, but I't like 1 video a month and with alot of work, special effects, costumes, actors and all that stuff, while a simple let's play from pewdiepie get's over a million views too, every day. (and there are even smaller channels with really high effort in their videos, but way too less people who actually care about it). It's kinda sad to see where this whole Let's Play thing is moving, because I feel like most really creative channels will get lost in the future.

Most let's players started with videos were they barely talked or even muted themself. But after a while you'll be able to talk freely and without any fear. It takes me a while to do my video's ;-; Since people are used to a certain level of video's now, Recording a game, and slapping it on the internet isn't good enough. Now people want quality, which is getting harder and harder as its getting saturated and people won't look twice at your videos if its just recorded and slapped up on the internet. I'm terrible at editing myself, but I'm getting better at it

Tanika's Misadventures Most people really don't realize this. They'll record like 3 matches of Call of Duty or Minecraft or something like that, then post it on the internet without editing or anything and then they get upset and quit KZbin after like a month because they thought they would be famous by now. That's why I think that you want to keep the mentality as doing it for a job or for fun and not being focused on becoming the next pewdiepie :/

TheMinecraftJarhead Yup, most people do not realize how much work it takes to edit stuff. My channel is full of random stuff that I just put up to show friends, but even most of those take several hours at least to edit. TheMinecraftJarhead I agree with what you said about maintaining the fun mentality, but I think if you start making gaming your job rather than a hobby, you will start to get sick of it and the magic of it is lost. Even if you force it by acting, it just comes across as not being genuine (which is the feeling I get from most famous channels these days). If any channel starts out wanting to do this sort of thing, it's never good to force it first, that comes later if you really want to dedicate yourself to it. Making quality on your channel page, a bit of quantity to boost the video count, playing niche games which are hardly uploaded and making connections with other channels is necessary for starting gaming channels these days. I maintain 2 separate channels; this one for gaming with my friends and another for my professional background (university 3D course + Game Art portfolio). This channel I sort of neglect a bit mainly because I'm busy with my work, but when I do update it I do it during my free time with heart, never during my work time. I'd probably pay a bit more attention to it (i.e. dedicate some of my work time) if it had something like 500 subs, but I have no idea if it'll ever make that much.

As a director and editor of short films and occasional video game content creator, I can safely say that editing "let's plays" for the most part is nothing. They're linear. Adding graphics takes a few minutes, each depending on the type, but otherwise editing should only take a few hours most. Look through the footage, cut out the fat and polish it up. My short films take 5-20 hours depending on length and they're only 5-15 mins long. That doesn't include all the work of getting actors script writing and storyboarding. Sheesh, I imagine you guys at Gaming Wildlife went through more work on this video than Pewdiepie does for his hour long scream fests.

If that was the case, then everyone would be popular. That said, it's easier to make than most other type of content. I just don't like it when people defend the editing behind it, or really lack thereof. The content is enjoyed through the personality of the people involved, not the work put in.

"How dare you defend people who started off doing something fun as a hobby and got a lucky break when they got famous and rich off of it! Everyone is supposed to slave at shitty jobs and be poor just like us! Waaa waaa waa!" -99% of the comments here. I hate to use the jealousy comeback here since it's done to death, but it really fits. People are so envious that they have minimum wage or low-paying shit jobs and these guy makes millions doing their hobby, that they can't see straight. Hell, I'm a bit jelly myself, I'd love to make millions playing, reviewing, and commentating on games, and jacksepticeye is a prime example of how the demand is STILL there even if you're a mile behind the curve (and not nearly as funny as the rest, but that's just my opinion on him), so for those who claim it's too easy and anyone could do it, I say try it out with a few videos. Buy the software, do the screen capturing, sync the audio and video, edit the videos, and post them for next to no views until you gain traffic, then when you get famous, come back and say how easy it was.

Yup people are asshole TBH it just all gets boring and old real quick. I am a bit mixed on it. I like to play video games and I actually have some hilarious comments about them myself, but if I ever tried to film myself playing them, I couldn't do it. So who knows, maybe a vast majority of us do have the potential, but only when we are around friends, in our comfort zone or something else. And then there was someone that did not care if they were being filmed and Let's Play was born.

I love how people like to bash let's players for getting money for "no work", or even comparing them to harder jobs with low income. First, it's not true. Second, your income in any entertainment industry is based on your popularity and personality, unlike most 9-to-5 jobs that some people see as the only "real" job. Third, if you're jealous of them, then it's your problem that you can't find a way to get more money for easier or more entertaining work, not theirs.

***** I know this is meant to be a troll comment but let's humor it for a second. Let's go ahead and assume that all I do all day every day is watch youtube videos. @Timx5599
@Timx5599 8 жыл бұрын
Jody Boles The focus of my criticism is mostly directed towards the let's play community as a whole, as opposed to individuals within it. It's impossible to compare the two on the same level, which is another reason why this this video is so out of place. You claim that companies don't do anything positive? While there is definitely a lot of dirty shit that they do, let's not forget that they at least provide jobs to people, which is something that just isn't substantial at all in let's plays. Yes, let's plays promote the creative talent in people but I honestly don't see how they inspire any other contribution to society. Really they only disillusion people into thinking they can make money from playing video games all day which only degrades our work ethic as a society. Our generation is already extremely self absorbed; everything everyone does has to be documented and shared like anyone actually wants to see what they had for breakfast. The nature of this is apparent in gaming streams, even if it does take on a different form. Holy fuck I'm only 22 and I sound like an angry middle-aged man ranting about kids these days. I could go on about my hate for lets plays and create a truly ridiculous wall of text but considering where I'm commenting, these claims would be mostly against the grain. I'll just conclude by admitting that everything I've been saying has been an exaggeration to some degree, but God damn it if you can't find any truth in it then it's my own fault for expecting anything out of a youtube comment section.

Vapor But sitting behind the screen, jumping on hype trains, and criticizing game companies with skilled people like animators, programmers and modelers, in an economy and market that is so dynamic, and difficult, with their level of education and comprehension of the corporate world, without a doubt they are still quite mediocre. Unless they are doing some game production themselves, they cant really understand. These guys are starting to become smucks and somebody needs to put these guys in their place before they forget.
@Vapor817
@Vapor817 8 жыл бұрын
knight2battle I'm sure they understand that companies have people with many skilled workers but in case you haven't noticed, that's not the people they're criticizing. They're criticizing the business executives and people who effectively write the checks to those programmers, modelers, and animators. Those are the people who make the shitty decisions that degrade an entertainment company in order to make the most profit, not the dozens of skilled professionals who have to do what they're told in order to get paid. Of course Gaming Wildlife be mediocre at this compared to them, because they're still an independent studio populated with people who likely hold their own jobs since the view count implies that they couldn't make nearly enough on YT ads alone.

Honestly I agree that the video editing part of making a video is pretty hard. A year ago when I was trying to make videos I would have to play for about an hour to get footage, sit through it for about 2 hours just picking out the parts I actually find good, and when all that was done I'd be lucky to have a 15 minute video. Eventually it got so consuming that I didn't have time to do it anymore and just kinda gave up. Guess making lets plays aren't for everyone.

That accompanied by slow internet and computer. It's not fun, editing can take about 10 hours if I am unlucky. and that's about 2 hours of video cut down to about 45 minutes of actual usable video? And god forbid I screw up, like my most recent video which has an audio Issue which was noticed ONLY after I had them uploaded. But I digress, for some odd reason I still enjoy it and try my best to keep putting videos out. Yay for apparently "Easy" work!

I'm not really much of a KZbinr at all, to be honest. Even though I like to record myself making videos of me playing my favorite video games and all, but I like to record stuff for fun instead of me uploading videos while trying not to make a huge fool of myself playing the games.

Calling lets plays a job is kind of an insult to those that work construction, scrub shitters, or drool over spreadsheets all day. I mean, it's technically correct - I'm just saying.

+AEIIIStraigon anything becomes a job once it becomes a demand and people want you to keep supplying it and you do cause it pays your bills. Difficulty and importance is another thing. You describe jobs with how difficult or important they are. But that doesn't define wether or not its a job.

Hey, people, read the last line - "it's technically correct" It's still an insult to people who bust their ass doing things they actually don't like. Comparing editing to roofing, for random example, is silly

Yeah that one seems like a bit of a cop out, it's slightly time consuming sure but it's just grabbing some clips together, putting your pre made beginning and end rolls in place, popping your annoying advertising pop ins where needed and putting your audio clip over it. Not exactly the hardest thing to do.

Is editing time consuming? Yes, is editing tough? No. I am a freelance editor myself, and has been involved in quite some time consuming stuff, but editing is not tough. Or at least, that depends on what you're doing. If you're editing a let's play, maybe 1 hour of footage, then editing is the easiest thing in the world. Add an intro, split the footage into sequences (if you have made the footage as such), mark funny parts and/or uninteresting parts, cut uninteresting parts out, add the effect you want to the funny parts, add an outro, render (depending on your PC, and how much you have added to the original footage, the time varies). Rendering is usually what takes up the most time for me, as my PC processor is shite. I really do despise people who say "OH YOU SAY LET'S PLAYS ARE EASY TO MAKE. WELL YOU HAVE NEVER TRIED EDITING THEN!" If you look at most let's play videos, the editing is limited to small cuts, maybe some text added, some zoom effects maybe, maybe webcam footage in the cornour (EXTREMELY EASY TO SYNC BTW), and maybe some lighting effects. Come back when you're making montage parodies like AncientReality and Pyrocynical, or when you're making youtube poop and/or gamer poop like mans1ay3r, then you can talk about how editing is "hard."

I watched Lets Plays back when they were mostly video game walkthroughs from Game FAQ writers, and honestly I still like that style better than the quickly edited "boring bits cut out" style since they make games seem more exciting than they really are. I'd love to see a version of Lets Plays "Just the boring bits" a bit of the reverse of those "only the good part" compilations just to show a lot of the slog that one goes through but everyone magically seems to forget.

I do minor video editing and I've spent days uploading old SAO Re: Hollow Fragment videos to KZbin because I was uploading them from my PS4 to Facebook to then download them to my laptop and run them through Movie Maker for editing, until I realized my Facebook video album has a limit and as I was uploading new vids, old ones were getting removed, so now I've just been editing and uploading the ones on Facebook to KZbin to catch up. I haven't played the game in like 2 days because of all the work I've been putting in, and I still have quite a bit to go. Making a 5 minute montage from numerous videos of footage took me hours because I had to go through all my videos and pick out those moments for the montages. Montages are harder to make than longer raw footage. People don't know how hard it is.

Sooooo... Basically this is a video defending Let's Play channels. If Let's Play creators were honest with us, they would tell us that their content is mostly full of overreacting, over exaggerating, and trying to act in such a way to keep children entertained. Real Let's Play videos that matter to me are calm and thought-provoking with maybe some genuine laughing or jokes. I will say that I have seen Pewdiepie's first Amnesia run and it was alright. His To The Moon LP was really good. So I'm not hating on him. I'm hating on the really obvious fake shit that is constantly created.

Let's Playing IS a hobby -_- it ain't an industry in the slightest. It's just modern youtube throwing money at people. They see what makes views and gives people money. That ain't a job, it's just pathetic is all. Before LPs exploded into this huge "facecam" fad and shit it was actually fun. Now it's just about people trying to get others to watch their annoying shit. *Both dropped out of college so that they could do youtube fulltime* ...I didn't think I'd ever feel sad for someone like Pewdiepie... There may be "editting" that goes into Let's Plays, but that doesn't mean it should qualify as any sort of job. I edit all my AMVs and stuff and it's a bitch to do, but that's no excuse to try and make money off of it. It's just for fun is all. *Emphasis on the commentary, not necessarily the gameplay* And that's kinda part of the problem with modern LPs. Back in 2006-2008 it was more on making both enjoyable. And yeah...those..."clickbait" thumbnails just make me wanna punch the people that put them up in the face mainly. Just annoying to look at more than anything.

So you say that video editing is what makes Lets Plays difficult to create, and then you go on to say that these lets players create around three videos a day. LOL! If they can successfully finish three fully edited videos a day, then it's clearly not difficult. Don't get me wrong I enjoy some lets players myself, but stop fucking pretending like it's hard. Seriously, ITS TIME TO STOP!

+Mr. Game & Watch the thing is that it's difficult to edit those videos. game grumps have people to edit their videos and the same with markiplier. but people like pewdiepie, dashiegames, and coryxkenshin do their own editing. just because they can get it done frequently doesn't mean the process is easy.

Your analogy about Let's Players being the video game equivalent of Sports Commentators was pretty accurate. I don't know why people don't attack Sports Commentators for basically having an easy job where all they do is talk about something, but attack Let's Players for basically doing the same thing.
