Sir Anthony van Dyck, Father of the Modern Portrait

Sir Anthony van Dyck became one of the finest portrait painters of all time and is considered to be the father of the modern portrait. Many of his subjects have a relevance that is as contemporary as in the modern era. His brief life would be one of fantastic production and though he wanted to pursue history painting like his master Rbens, it became obvious that his portraits would outshine his master. Van Dyck worked feverishly during his days and partied hard in the evening, hosting notables and the King of the day at his studio. A truly remarkable person and an accomplished painter.
