One thing I'm surprised he didn't bring up when discussing exploding infrastructure is stuxnet, definitely interesting to read up on! Basically a piece of malware was created that would specifically target Iranian nuclear facilities - it would spin the rotors in the centrifuges so fast it would cause the entire thing to burn out. If my memory serves me there was also an earlier version of the malware that would lead pressure to build up in the chamber, and then I expect explode. Whilst doing this stuxnet would feed back normal values to the operators so they couldn't tell that there was issue. So whilst you couldn't explode things quite as quickly as in this video as exploits as sophisticated as stuxnet would likely take years to develop and only work for specific systems, it is very possible to blow stuff up.

Jezuz christ You don’t even have to know how to program to hack though. Knowledge about how networks work and interact with security is more important. Most code that is used in hacking is scripts and you can learn how to script with Python in a very short amount of time. You mentioned programming classes teaching development. If you understand code and can program. You are going to know what to do when you start practicing hacking. The concepts of programming don’t change just because the focus is software development and not hacking. It all seems crazy at first until you start learning about it. It’s not anymore complicated than any other type of tech job. There are sites out there that provide capture the flag material for ethical hackers to practice on. Practice hacking a virtual machine until you are confident in your skills.

The particular method _used_ in the game (using Aiden's phone for everything) is a bit farfetched. A cellphone doesn't normally emit infrared or RF in the frequencies used by garage door openers, etc. The game handwaves it by saying everything is tied into CTOS, and Aiden (and/or DedSec) has a backdoor into CTOS. So in-game he's just telling CTOS "turn the lights at this intersection green" or "open this door". But as Sammy points out, a lot of what Aiden does in the game is at least plausible.

Not unless everything is running off of one really stupid company who doesn't look into obvious breeches. IRL it takes a lot of time and resources in order to execute any attack unless it's some petty DoS. The more complex the network or system, the more time and resources it would take. Your best bet IRL would be to be an insider with high access privileges but even then you would be found it pretty fast since there are fewer people at the top with access vs all the people at the bottom with little access.
@Shade019824 жыл бұрын
@@JustSkram Actually not at all. Most of what he does are very simple systems. For example hacking cars, doors, gates and all that stuff is relatively easy (assuming you know what you're doing, which is kind of the premise here). You don't usually need high level access until you try to access core systems. You'd be surprised how bad security is even in big companies.

@Finnegan Doyle Well, a CToS-like system wouldn't be too out of the way of reality, and would allow for this kind of things.

Finnegan Doyle with how people nowadays want simplicity and convenience, the idea of combining every electronic based infrastructure in a city into being controlled by one operating system doesn’t seem to far fetched. There would be protests, but the idea of convenience is what most people would agree on.

DarkCeptor44 although it no doubt makes it easier having a back foot wouldn’t just allow you to press a single button on phone and instantly hack something, so I doubt he would call it real. It’s a game so it obviously wouldn’t want you to spend minutes to hours trying to hack something

What he seems to be missing is an understanding of the in-game mechanic of CTOS, which is integrated into everything. It's explained in-game that anything tied into CTOS has it's wiring mapped out to make repairs easier for those with access; Aiden also doesn't need any radio equipment outside of his phone because his phone is tied into the CTOS network. So Aiden isn't directly accessing anything with his phone, he's using his phone to connect to the network that has wired and wireless access to things around him (so he doesn't require RF or additional equipment for most of the game). Not Samy's fault though; he doesn't seem aware of the in-game explanation, and some of the visuals (identifier lines) make it seem like Aiden is directly connecting to items instead of through the network.

The part where tou get the cars to explode is possible, just not on that extreme of a level. If you can somehow hack the ecu of a car, you can throw off the timeing of the piston and fuel injection and cause your engine to backfire (when fire comes out the exhausts) and stop the engine from working.

To be fair, isn’t the entire city’s, well, everything connected to the ctOS, so it’s not necessarily about hacking seperate things but hacking one thing and simply controlling everything by sending commands to one system, that’s why everything can be done on phone? I mean I haven’t researched much, and it really doesn’t matter, but I dunno, I think with that idea it makes the game more immersive rather than constantly thinking “really, cmon, that’s stupid, that could never happen”.
