Deep Dive into Eddie Van Halen's "Live Without a Net" Solo
The "Live Without a Net" video features a legendary performance by Eddie Van Halen, particularly his mind-blowing solo. Eddie opens seated, showcasing his delicate touch with a fingerpicking melody. The instrumental "316" is named for the March 16, 1991, birthday of Eddie's son Wolfgang, who later went on to be Van Halen's last bass player, although the song predates his birth (as part of it was used by Eddie at the beginning of his guitar solo on tour, as seen on Live Without a Net, and was originally written for 5150). On Wolfgang's 25th birthday on March 16, 2016, his mother Valerie Bertinelli posted a photo on her Facebook page of her and Eddie during her pregnancy with the caption "Ed playing 316 on my growing tummy, before he knew he would call it 316" Eddie can be seen in the photo playing an acoustic guitar on top of Valerie's pregnant belly.
The second part is where Eddie truly takes center stage. "Eruption" explodes with a flurry of notes, showcasing his mastery of speed picking, tapping, and the whammy bar. His fingers dance across the fretboard with incredible accuracy, creating a whirlwind of sound. While Eddie's technical prowess is undeniable, his solo isn't just about speed. He weaves in melodic phrases and harmonic ideas throughout, keeping the listener engaged beyond just the technical showmanship. A crucial element of the solo's impact is Eddie's signature guitar tone, achieved through a combination of his playing style, modified equipment, and effects pedals, adds a raw and powerful texture to the music.
Impact and Legacy:
Eddie's "Live Without a Net" solo became a landmark in rock guitar history. It inspired countless guitarists and redefined what was possible on the instrument. Beyond technical skill, the solo showcases Eddie's ability to connect with the audience. His energy and passion are infectious, making the performance captivating even for non-guitarists. Even decades later, Eddie's "Live Without a Net" solo remains a benchmark for rock guitar playing. It's a testament to his innovative spirit and enduring influence on the world of music.
Eddie Van Halen's solo in "Live Without a Net" is more than just a display of technical prowess. It's a masterfully crafted piece of music that combines melody, emotion, and pure rock and roll energy. It's a performance that continues to inspire and amaze guitarists and music fans alike.

I’m a “guitarist.” The wallpaper on my computer is a picture of Eddie Van Halen eating a sandwich outside of a McDonald’s in the 70s. I have it there to remind myself that there was something Eddie did that I can do too.

When he puts that cig in his mouth and starts the solo, he's exactly where he wants to be. The most dynamic guitarist and showman in my lifetime. He changed what was possible w guitar for a generation. Every great modern guitarist started w Van Halen, once they learned technique and scales. The first instrument both Alex and Eddie learned was piano.

Long story.. I was 16 years old when my mother and I moved to a new neighborhood in the summer of 1989. Not having any friends in the new neighborhood I was bummed. I went to the local video store to rent movies and found Live without a net amongst a few other concerts. Took it home and my mouth sat on the living room floor for hours. I was a new guitarist learning but when I saw this I got so depressed and I remember saying to myself " I will never be able to do this" sure enough after years of practicing and years of renting the video I was able to play this solo, minus the whammy bar things because my guitar didn't have a whammy bar. The feeling of accomplishment I felt when I was able to play this was intoxicating. So the message is... NEVER GIVE UP KEEP GOING AND YOU WILL GET THERE. I still get chills when I watch this, unbelievable talent.

@@brandonplaysguitar08 to practice what i learned from Eddie was to pause the video, count the frets where his hands were and listen like a crazy person over and over, get a few notes and feel great and go back until it becomes second nature. Also another important thing was sometimes to just watch the video over and over again so it sinks into your brain. It took a long time but it was so much fun

I got to go backstage and meet them in 93. Their manager told us to not shake Ed's hand, because apparently a fan had latched on and wouldn't let go a few dates earlier. But we could give him a hi-five if we wanted. So I did. It was like giving a hi-five to a brick wall. It actually hurt. But I got to meet Van Halen, so...

I remember showing my buddies this when it came out in 85/86. In 88, I was 16 and wiggled up to the stage at the 1st concert of Monsters of Rock in East Troy, WI. VH was the headliner. Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, and the Scorps were merely opening acts lol. The experience was the Woodstock of my generation. Now, at 53, my wall in my office consists of Kramers, the iconic 5150 and Frankie guitars (that I built). Seeing this, in this kind of resolution, is absolutely fantastic. Thank you for doing this. You rock!!!

I watched the VHS copy of this show a bunch of times when I was a kid but on KZbin it looked so bad I could not get through it. Thanks to whoever cleaned it up and made it high def. This was such a great tour for Van Halen because it was all about the music. No over the top 1984 stage sets that cost so much that the band barely made any money on the tour. Just a bare bones stage set up and two hours of great music. And no ten minute David Lee Roth speeches either.

I grew up there in GR. I rented a room at the dog kennel house before the fire. During the cedar fire, i rented a home at the base of mt woodson. The night before the fire i was literally partying down the street in garden rd, got drunk and left my car there! Around 10am at mt woodson i was awakened by the fd, but basically trapped with no car. Rode it out and watched numerous homes burn on hwy 67. Fast forward to 07, the kennel house was nicely rebuilt (4500 sq ft) and i immediately rented a beautiful big bedroom. Then the witch creek fire blew through. Narrowly dodged that bullet too. Ive saved this video for years, its one of the best local docs of the cedar fire imo.
