That is why John Petrucci has foot props on stage. Once you start all that sweeping and blazing fast playing you have to lock yourself in a classical guitar position where there is no movement in order to pull it off. That what Joe is doing here with playing seated.

Mark Gradoia it’s actually the new Ibanez 1/2 scale chair. It’s just like a full size chair in every way, the quality - but, 1/2 the scale. This allows you to sit much faster and easier than you would in a full scale chair. You can also try alternate chair tunings. I think Paul Gilbert already promoted this?

Very True indeed...but as a musician that made the world realize that a living could be made doing instrumental rock and as a teacher (Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Rick Hunolt, Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons, Charlie Hunter, Kevin Cadogan, and Alex Skolnick) there is no other Teacher/Performer of this generation that caused such a trickle effect as Satriani did with "Surfing"...think about the connections...7 string guitars included...

I agree. I can always recognize a Joe Satriani song, because it has structure - it makes sense musically. And his songs can get complex, but they always have that core that makes them very satisfying. Big fan. I just love his Saturated concert. I'm sure I've listened to it hundreds of times and it never gets old.

For some. But music does not have to have parts like a shorus, a verse, pre chorus, bridge and solo. I always liked him for his tone. That liquid metallic 80-90s sound that is pure Satch. Other folks have structure too, they are not Satch. Only as a hobby guitarists I never had a favorite. I do not have to compete virtuosos against each other, they all make me feel equally useless at guitar. Be it folks like Macalpine, Guilbert, Satriani, Vai. Yngwie, Muhammed Suiçmez, Ron Jarzombek, the 20 other ones I do not have time to list, or 10s of thousands I have yet to hear. All equally good at making me sound like trash.

You're one of my all-time favorites Satch. I met you in Las Vegas, I think 98? I want to say it was at the Hard Rock when I first saw you live. I was 16 or 17. Me and my buddy would not give up trying to sneak in through the backdoor to meet you after the show. Security kept throwing us out. We were planning our next attempt and you just walked right out and said something like, "You guys wanted to see me?" Then you hung out with us there in the back alley for at least 15 minutes, giving us tips on various techniques, signing all the stuff we wanted you to sign. Such a long time ago, I'm pushing 40 now but because of you Satch, I actually became quite the accomplished guitar player, winning the talent show my senior in high-school and eventually teaching guitar myself for almost four years in the mid 2000s. I'm a huge fan. Thanks for all the great music all these years.

A retail supervisor of mine regales us regularly about his days, years ago working in a major Sam Goody store, and getting in-store-appearances or somehow getting backstage passes to see bands, including meet-and-greets. He got to see the Satriani show, and hang backstage. He says Joe was so regular, and didn't seem egotistical whatsoever. Conversation was about fun stuff. Wasn't like he was stuck with fans, it even went on so long, my supervisor felt like he himself was overstaying his welcome, as it was getting pretty late. He could have kept talking to Joe all night, and it seemed like Joe would have let him!

When I first heard this album and bought the tab book, I was so inspired to try to learn the entire album from beginning to end. I got to this tune, and it honestly made me give up playing this album for about 25 years. I'm talking about 1990, 91 way before you could go on KZbin and see how guys are executing licks or slow stuff down, etc. Joe to me has always been the best songwriter out of all the guitar instrumentalists (besides E.J.) but not really the best technical player. This tune changed that. I'm relieved to hear he couldn't play this tune live either back then 😂

Exactly. Why do his melodies and arrangements stick in your head so well?...
@biohazard8295
@biohazard8295 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenjones6780 imo he decides to compose and play from some ideas he has in his head, maybe some random chord strumming helps him but the majority of the idea is generated on an emotional level and he tries to play what he feels is gonna work out. In his most recent interview he said that music is not about rules is just a matter of "cause and effect". A large majority of rock/metal composers write songs using the guitar only and kinda get stuck to the same scale patterns expecially when soloing. Steve Vai talked about this about composing "for the love of god". It started from an idea that he thought and he said he had to work a bit to translate it to the guitar fretboard because it wasnt something he would have improvised or composed using previous licks. I don't know how to explain it better but that is just my feeling.
@stevenjones6780
@stevenjones6780 2 жыл бұрын
@@biohazard8295 Well said. And yes, I saw that 2 min snippet where he mentions 'cause & effect'. Apparently Jimmy Page once quoted, upon critique of his technical ability, "I deal in emotions". Zeppelin live was certainly less manicured and more experimental than studio. I've benefited as much or more from piano and Jazz theory than just dwelling on "guitar planet". That said, You've gotta love the way the mind, body, and spirit fall on the instrument and what great ideas come directly from that. Eddie Van Halen once said in an interview "Everything I do is an accident, get used to it"...LOL

He and Vai as well gave us access to the green room and hung out before the show truly a couple of regular guys who just happen to be very good I'll even say the best at what they do. The fact that he plays this so clean on the record and not so much here shows how difficult it really is. Mad props to satch for writing this song. He’s not really a sweep guy but he killed it on this track. Awesome.

'Clean' yes. As I age it becomes apparent how much less of the sound comes from gain (most rock amps have way more than needed), and how much comes from other things like great technique...
@OmniscientVirtuosity
@OmniscientVirtuosity 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenjones6780 but you missed the point of my comment.... satch isn’t playing it well enough here.... so why all the talk about great technique? It was clearly studio trickery
@denimchicken104
@denimchicken104 Жыл бұрын
@@OmniscientVirtuosityhow can anybody know that? The studio has the benefit of recording small parts at a time and using the best of all takes. That’s not really trickery. No one expects a complicated song to be recorded all in one take.
@SextusHempiryk
@SextusHempiryk 10 ай бұрын
@@OmniscientVirtuosity Satche's technique is a studio trickery? Bwahahahaha. It's not a requirement in studio to record whole songs flawlessly. There is no shame in punching in few notes here and there if needs be. You don't have evidence that that even happened. Trickery would be if someone else played it instead of Satch. Or if he recorded it 2x slower and sped it up later. Get of your hight horse...

1969lincolnosiris Matt Bissonette didn't like the touring aspect, catching planes, soundcheck, chill a bit at the hotel room, after concert go to another airport, same thing over and over again, that's why he quit... I don't remember where I read this, I guess it was at Satriani's website a long time ago... Matt is a talented fucker, I was listening to an album called "Jughead" he recorded with his brother on drums and Ty Tabor from King's X, crazy stuff, pop sound with heavy hooks
