James "Big Jim" Colosimo was a longtime gang leader who ran a popular restaurant, Colosimo's Cafe, at 2126 S. Wabash Ave., that was a hot spot for vice in Chicago. Colosimo was gunned down in his restaurant on May 11, 1920. One theory has it that his second-in-command, Johnny Torrio, set up the killing. Torrio took over Big Jim's empire until he handed the reins to Al Capone. The funeral for Big Jim Colosimo, one of Chicago's top gangsters, on May 15, 1920. According to the Chicago Tribune, "Three judges, eight alderman, an assistant state's attorney, a congressman, a state representative and a leading artist of the Chicago Opera company are listed as honorary pallbearers along with gamblers, ex-gamblers, divekeepers, and ex-divekeepers.
