How do you define a movie genius? How about a guy who can make one of the most screamingly funny movies EVER, cast the most-desired woman in human history in the female lead -- and then begin and end the film with a pair of massacres that don't affect its comedic status one bit? "Nobody's perfect"? Billy Wilder was.

Incredibly, Nehemiah Persoff (Little Bonaparte) is -- as of 4 October 2021 -- still with us, at 102: SIXTY-TWO YEARS after this film! He is the last surviving member of the cast of "Some Like It Hot". (Also, he is a very accomplished painter. Multiple talents). I might add that I always found the nickname "Little Bonaparte" funny. Isn't that rather like calling someone "a bald Yul Brynner"? It's also funny to look at the two gangsters sitting on either side of Spats Columbo, and remember where they turned up over the years. Mike Mazurki -- on Spats' left -- had a bit part in the giant-ant horror movie "Them!", five years before "Some Like It Hot". The one on his right showed up several years later on "Gilligan's Island", as the thuggish assistant to the mad scientist who swapped the castaways' brains around. The guy here had Ginger's brain put into him; when he/she looked in a mirror, his/her face got mournful, and he/she moaned: "I think I'm going to cry!"

The hit man in the cake is none other than Edward G. Robinson (Jr.) the son of the legendary movie gangster! I have seen a photo of George Raft giving Eddie instructions on holding and using the mock machine gun (George Raft would know!).
@davelowrie14865 жыл бұрын
Genius casting touch. Wilder even had him borrowing Raft's signature coin flip, from Scarface, in the hotel lobby. Then Raft grabs the coin in mid-air and scolds him with "Neat trick!"

Cool.
@pa39974 жыл бұрын
Wilder originally also wanted Edward Robinson Sr to play Bonaparte in a kind of cameo, which certainly would have been interesting - though Nehemiah Persoff is absolutely brilliant. But Robinson and Raft obviously once had a fight decades ago and Robinson didn't want to work with him again.

I first saw this movie probably in the mid-1970s or so. At the time, I don't think I realized the kind of star George Raft (Spats) was. He was a friend of Bugsy Siegel and he also made some notable gangster flicks in the 30s & 40s. He was also something of hoofer.

Originally in the script Little Bonaparte also said, in-between "you made the right choice" and "Int he last fiscal year, our income was a hundred and twelve million dollars": :Let's look at the record. We have fought off the crackpots who want to repeal Prohibition and destroy the American home - by bringing he corner saloon. We have stamped out the fly-by-night operators who endangered public health by brewing gin in their own bathtubs, which is very unsanitary. We have made. areal contribution Ott national prosperity - we are helping the automobile industry by buying all those trucks, the glass industry by using all those bottles, and the steel industry - you know, all those corkscrews." When he puts it like that it does sound like a good business year.

Nehemiah Persoff rules in this scene. He goes right to the edge of overacting but doesn't...and when he says, "UP!" you can tell there's menace behind the mirth. A threat, rising voice, then backing off. "But I say..." God, Persoff was brilliant in this scene. And the movie was funny to the nth degree, esp. Tony Curtis doing his Cary Grant impression, Marilyn being perfect, and the final line. They sure don't make 'em like this anymore.
