@@zurogato Fields says the line (a rough cliche at the time) to a passing couple as he works at a circus ticket window: I saw it but don't remember which film. Most of his dialogues were in his own unique idiom---"or we wouldn't be remembering him today" (as a Fields film crewman said it).

This story comes from the book written by his mistress, I read it over 40 years ago and can't remember its title. Fields, and his entourage were on a road in Georgia driving to his next engagement. The car ran out of gas. The driver told Fields they passed a gas station about a mile back. The driver walks and gets gas and comes back taking about 45 minutes. Not wanting to run out of gas again, Field's has the driver take them to the gas station. Now the owner was an elderly man who did things according to his time schedule. By the time he filled up the gas tank, took a couple of phone calls, checked the tires and under the hood, about 40 minutes elapsed. This drove Fields nuts, and his temper was rising. Finally, they were on their way, passed where they had run out of gas, took the curve in the road about 200 yards ahead, and saw a brightly lit, up to date modern gas station. Fields almost had a stroke.

I heard a recording of Groucho Marx on the Dick Cavet show (early 60sish) and he told a story of being invited to Field's home. During the tour inside, he said that Bill took him up into the attic and he saw nearly endless crates of whiskey - he estimated over $50K worth of the stuff (In 1930s/40s money - so a fortune today). Amazed, Groucho said: _"Bill! What are you doing with all this whiskey. Prohibition ended years ago."_ Groucho said Bill replied: _"It could come back."_

@@zurogato You are most welcome. Fields has been a life-long fascination for me. During the 70s, he had a large resurgence in interest and me, being a preteen, ate the stuff up. I have seen early, early movies and I would certainly classify him as one of the all-time greats!

Woman: Do you like children? W C Fields: I do if they're properly cooked. I'm about as busy as a pickpocket in a nudist colony. I once read in a book about the evils of strong drink. It made me want to give up reading. It was a woman that drove me to drink and I never had the decency to write her and thank her. Someone's taken the cork out of my breakfast! Woman: And your breath smells of cheap liquor! W.C.Fields: CHEAP? It cost four dollars a gallon! When he was dying in the hospital reading the bible a friend said "Bill you never read the bible, why now?" He responded "I'm looking for loopholes". Contrary to popular belief Gods last name is not "damn it". "Is this a game of chance?" "Not the way I play it, no." Ah yes, Drink...one of the greatest pleasures in life. I bought a wonderful club in Toronto, yeah, a Canadian Club. The Duchess and I sat up 'til 4 o'clock, and drank 3 quarts of rye. Why do you drink so much? Because I like it.
