I have one with 2 chain hoists in a 14' foot ceiling for 5 years. 2 hoists much nicer to lift than trying to balance loads. Once loads are level you can use one hand for both chains to go up or down synced up. Nice for loading pickup beds. Like your vids.

I used these for years in factories. You either used a gantry or a jib. Gantry goes a lot farther in a small shop. I lifted the whole front of my car to do brakes and suspensiond back in the early 80s. All you had to do was put something like an old boat cushion between the chain and the bumper in a friends tool and die shop.

Fortunately for me, I inherited a home with a huge garage that I could put 3 class A motor homes in. It also already had a huge Crain lift in the garage too. They certainly do come in handy more often than one would think! I don’t have two Crain on it, but I do have a smaller wench hooks up to my ceiling in the garage for lifting lighter weight. It’s a 3 bay garage and these are in 2 of the bays. Works out pretty well for my needs so far! Especially considering I didn’t have to pay for anything who can complain? 😂

You should add a couple extra pulleys and some more cable so one crank can lift both posts at the same time. So you don’t fatigue the welds on the top plates over time.

Great idea with the modifications. The cam action on that hand crank is an interesting piece of engineering. Smart to smooth it out a bit. Sounds like you need to shorten the crank handle after moving the mechanism out of the way. Gonna suck to bang into the brace with every revolution. I usually just use the trusses in my shop from which to hang a hoist for engine pulls and such, but am limited by 9' ceilings. A gantry would be nice to have around for sure. We had a huge one in a boat shop where I worked back in the 90's. Pulled a few big boat engines with that thing. Not sure whatever happened to it.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Жыл бұрын
Yeah shortening or rebending the hand crank is definitely the plan. I just want to make sure it's in the position I wanted to be in. I keep lifting from the 2x4 trusses in my garage and I'm afraid one day I'm going to bring down the ceiling. Try to limit myself to maybe 200 lb....
@corey6393
@corey6393 Жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford I run a 2 1/2" pipe over 4 truss bottom chords and hang a chain from the center of that. Plenty strong for what I do, (4 cyl car engines and such) but I wouldn't lift a V8 or a 1500lb trailer with that setup.

I bought one of those years ago, for an unplanned project that needed to be done within 2 days. I ran into exactly the same problem with one of the cable winches... it just wasn't make correctly or greased at all. It failed before the first use and it was the only one they had and the cable winches were already scavenged off the floor model (should be a warning sign). Not finding a replacement readily at hand I ended up taking the cable off and the guts out and drilled a hole and just attached the cable directly to the center pin which actually made that side easier to use. I had planned on getting 2 cheap boat cable winches to use since I was assuming the other one would soon fail, even though I cleaned it up and added some decent grease. Its been many projects and neither have failed and I honestly like the way my jury rigged side works better as even though it doesn't hold the tension for you it goes up and down much faster and easier and I am only using it under load until I can stick the pin back in. I have always wanted to widen mine so that's going in the mental filing cabinet, although I am going to steal your two troll and winch idea asap...
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Жыл бұрын
It's a really unique design and since everything at HF is a clone of a real product, I'm sure it was made nicer originally. The original was probably all machined from hardened steel. It did drastically reduce the effort(about 1/2) after I smoothed out the cast iron though. I saw reviews on youtube where guys replaced them with boat winches but I like the simple wrap around the center shaft.

That should work great for you. The uncle-in -law made something like that for my shop, it swivels on trailer bearings and rolls on the floor in a half circle with about a fifteen foot radius. Reminds me that I STILL need to finish the overkill 19th Century trolley that I got sidetracked in the middle of probably a year ago. I've been sliding a chain across the I-beam with a chain-hoist up on a ladder since the electric wench got abused, then I saw the 500lb max. sticker, poor thing.

Yup. My HF gantry is over 20 years old and the steel is twice has heavy as the new ones. Did the same 2 trolley/hoist setup. Mine lifted a 9x42 enco mill no problem. I sold the original I beam and fabricated my own out of 2, 6” channel irons and weld back to back. My inside is 10.5’. Careful when raising/lowering…the trolleys want to take off quick. Tie them off before adjusting. Not to impressed with the crank handle hitting the brace. Gonna be a lot of swearing when your hand get pinched!

This could be easily cut down and rewelded to fit under the garage door. I contemplated doing the same thing but the overall height wouldn't have been enough for the task that I needed it for. I may still do this this in the future after I'm done with my job.

No issues with the mag drill being 50hz running on 60hz?
@sixtyfiveford

That's a typo since they're a UK-based company. Their stuff is generally 240 volts at 50 Hz. This mag drill is setup for the US 120 volts at 60 Hz.

Do you suppose a guy could get a box of sorts and rig it up to that gantry crane and put the dog in the box and pick the dog up with the gantry crane?
