10.8 million high school graduates across China have taken the country’s notoriously challenging college entrance exam, known as the gaokao. This year, the test has come with extra stress: staying healthy during the coronavirus pandemic. With a recent surge in Covid-19 cases in China’s southern Guangdong province, education authorities required all examinees to monitor their health for 14 days before the assessment. The examination started on June 7, 2021, covering Chinese, mathematics and English, as well as liberal arts or science electives.

I was in this exam 20 years ago. I appreciated having an opportunity of receiving top education when I had no background, no family wealth or social connections. All we got were our scores, for which we worked every day from 8 am to 9 pm for several years. Gaokao is not a perfect system, but it definitely was the way out for children of the poor and possibly the fairest chance to change your life.
@specialtwice4975

Question, so let's say a poor student from the country side got top scores and could enter the top universities, does this mean the university schooling is completely paid for? Is it free for the students who do well? Or do the poor still have to pay and go into debt? (Take out loans)
@sen431

@@specialtwice4975 You still have to pay for the tuition fee but it's extremely economical compared to the universities in the US, UK or Australia. In my days, it was about 6000 Yuan RMB for a year, equivalent to 800 US dollars. Back then, some families in China still could not afford this but there were national student loan program, which charged basically no interest and you can pay it back after you graduate, normally within 2-3 years when you have a job, because a common college graduate would make about 2000 Yuan RMB every month (in 2005). For special occasions like minority students from Xinjiang, Tibet or Inner Mongolia, etc. there were extra allowances to guarantee that they could live well and finish with the courses. I got some college buddies from Xinjiang 20 years ago and they were mostly supported by these programs, which indicated how ridiculous and shameless those lies made up by CIA are. Truth: every false accusation the US made up about China must be what they have done a thousand times in history.
@ms21945
@ms21945 3 жыл бұрын
@@specialtwice4975 actually if you are from a city/town which seldom has kids going to the very top university you will be rewarded with big incentive by your school, local government and business entities. You never need to worry about tuition cost of the top 2 universities in china: tsinghua and Peking universities. The incentive is so big some kids can buy a new car after tuition cost.

I'm glad to see so many parents nowadays being encouraging and not pushy for results. As someone who suffered from extreme anxiety for years while preparing for a similar test, one kind word can really make a difference in a teenager's mind. In the end, a student's knowledge level can't be judged from one or two tests, the same way a worker's efficiency level can't be judged from one or two assignments.

My year of gaokao, was during the SARS pandemic. I went though a very similar situation. We were asked to buy thermometers to monitor our temperature all the time, our monthly home visit was canceled, so my parents would come to visit me every two weeks despite me telling them not to for their safety. we would talk over the school fence cos they were bot allowed to get in and they just handed me the food and money through the fence. Whenever I called my parents over the phone, I would talk with the speaker 20 cm away from my face cos it was public phones. I managed to get into one of the best university despite all that. This brings back so much memories.

I teach English to Chinese kids online. They spend literally their entire childhood working towards that exam, with little to no free time. Every time I ask my student a question like "What did you do today?" Or "what will you do this weekend?" the answer is one and the same: homework. This is true of five year olds just as much as it is for teenagers. Can't help but feel sorry for the poor kids-even the indolence of youth is taken from them.
@thanhavictus
@thanhavictus 3 жыл бұрын
In the video, when I saw their parents say that they are proud of their kids even if they tried their best, And to see that father say that he's okay with his son not doing well and just doing other things, it was truly wholesome. I know the Chinese put a lot of emphasis on testing, but the South China morning post really showed a wholesome perspective you don't often get to see

@@thanhavictus well yeah, the entire reason their videos frequent on the front page of KZbin is to boost public perception of China in the West. Don't get me wrong, there are many things I love about China, but the modern educational culture there is just inhumane

@@jpaqon Nah I dont think so. I went through all those so called inhumane stuff and now I'm super grateful. That's the expedient to build capable men when we only have limited resources. Some countries chose a different way and they breed creatures such as australian teenagers from the poor, while the kids of the rich get well educated. Btw your students could have done anything else in their weekends but they could not describe it in english so they just went for the no brainer which is homework. Very relatable experience to me.
@disappearintothesea

@@jpaqon I don’t think inhumane is the right word. A lot of East Asian countries still have deep rooted Confucius ideas so until you understand what meritocracy is to the culture you’d find it difficult to relate. What’s inhumane, however, is having kids shooting up their classmates (apologies if you’re not American).
@jpaqon
@jpaqon 2 жыл бұрын
@@disappearintothesea I don't live in America. All I know is that with both Chinese students online and the university students I've met all share the common trait of being unimaginative cogs in a great and terrible machine of pseudo-education. It isn't right to blame Confucius for the current education malaise in China and other Asian countries; it is the fault of modernity taken to its worst extremes, reducing the person to a mere unit of economic potential. China is more western than the West, and is the innevitable conclusion of all materialist cultures. Only classical, truly humanist pedagogy can provide a voice of protest against the Moloch of the industrial education system.

They helped me figure out some things for sure. I thought the 2-days (16 hours) of licensing exams here in the US for my profession was hard. Until now in Europe, wherever I saw a Chinese student in the library or on the street, I treated them the same as every one else. But now I will treat them more respectfully because the journey they all go through is itself epic enough to be respected amongst other students of different nationality(ies).

The whole country starts at the same time (regardless of the time difference). The examination papers are state secrets until the beginning of the examination. All the examination rooms will block the nearby roads, block all electronic signals, and all the police will be on standby. It's not perfect, but it's the fairest test in china

Since I was young, no matter what subject it was, he never asked me how it went except only once we meet after I am done giving my exams. If I say I did well, he smiles, if I say I did bad, he would be like, its okay concentrate on your next subject. That way I was always less stressed if my exams went bad.
