@David Malcolm matter of perspective, I think most people will agree that the key to a fulfilling life is a certain amount of hardship. Studies have shown after interviewing the world's most successful people from athletes, CEO's and entrepreneurs that they felt happiest when they were achieving something that was previously thought impossible for them. In other words, this type of insane exam would be like a very worthwhile challenge to those who want to test their mettle academically. Also something for people to compare themselves to. For example, top lawyers don't really care how much they get paid, they just care that they are getting paid more than their rivals within the firm. Competition to prove yourself has been ingrained in the story of humanity since the beginning of time. Heracles 12 labours is just one example. Olympics is another modern example. Of course, not everyone is up for such challenges, which is why there are 'normal' universities, and 'normal' jobs that people can take. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
@popinzxcv5 жыл бұрын
@David Malcolm I agree with you, but I don't think its as hellish as you believe. It seems to be a unique aspect of Chinese culture ever since the world's first meritocratic exam was created to push every child to be an academic. They are obsessed with the possibility that there child may be a huge success through an exam. The traditional Imperial exam would guarantee you a prestigious job for a lifetime. But it's not that simple, being successful nowadays has always needed many other attributes combined. there are those in China that still become successful without getting amazing scores in the 'Gaokao'. I believe the main drive for these kids, parents and everyone else going through these tough exams is a matter of prestige. It gives your parents something to brag about, something for you to write on your resume etc. I won't deny that it is very hard to get into the best Universities of China, but that doesn't mean if you don't get in you're subjected to poverty. It just means you'll find it much harder to enter into jobs. But its the same anywhere, if you don't have the name brand of your Uni, you need to be creative in getting some work experience, extra-curriculars to get an advantage over your peers.

As a Chinese who studies at US now I can tell it is how it is in China. Because there're too many people competing, and it is considered as a life mattered thing cuz many people are poor and this is like the only chance for them to change their lives and compete equally. Even though it's brutal, you have to deal with it. Cuz better college = better jobs and salary. However I don't fit in that system well so luckily my parents sent me to US.

linkinmetalica Don’t make conclusions so fast. I didn’t say that university is the only factor that influence ur work. What I meant is higher education provides u more opportunities. Yes, there certainly are many ppl who don’t have degrees and get their jobs. But it must be some good reasons behind, like u said, their work experience or their talents, etc. But don’t u think if ur an employer looking at many applicants with similar backgrounds. The one who went to Ivy schools is more likely to catch ur attentions? Cuz that means this person has the ability to learn things well and may have a great potential. And even some research show that ppl with higher education tend to have more income. But that’s definitely not the only thing that matters.

@@directorlunchie2322 Kid, US SAT exam is way easier than Gaokao exam. Don't you know that Gaokao exam is one of the toughest exam in this world. They can only appear once in their lifetime. Also, your English sucks as well. If you talk about Harvard, only brilliant and smart students get admission there but still it's not difficult to enter in different colleges. Pls keep the conversation going on improving the educational system. It is unrealistic to assume the productivity of knowledge workers can improve in efficiency or effectiveness by breaking their hearts and minds in the process of learning...widely accepted literature on increasing human capital strongly discourages this standardization of learning that rips you from creating valuable knowledge but instead forces you to spill out what is in your head.. China is an incredible country and I truly believe it will not stale in this system and people also hold the educational system to account for not increasing their capabilities/way of teaching/stucture for all their students that sacrifice everything for this exam.

Kura Pika Haha, flasks are common hot water containers used in China, not necessarily a symbol of good luck. People in China has get used to consume hot water as a good practice to kill germs. The tap water was believed not safe to drink because of less well filtered, sterilized, or purified in China. I am not sure if the water sanitation has been improve significantly recently or not. The practice of drink water fresh out the tap water may still not common in China. Another reason that hot water is preferred in China may associate with the benefit of warm up the stomach. Chinese people like hot water just as Americans like ice water.

One interesting but sad thing is that when I went back to my hometown Songjiang, Shanghai this summer and visited my high school teacher, he told me now in Songjiang or Shanghai, this Gaokao is no longer valued as much as what we used to do 10 years ago, especially for wealthy family. Reason is simple, wealthy family has strong social relationship and financial resource that their kids have many more opportunities other than Gaokao. But this will never be the case for poor family. BTW, back 10 years ago when I took Gaokao, even rich kids and family also treated Gaokao seriously.

Actually memorization must not be put into a shameful act of learning. In fact, memorization is just a step towards understanding a concept. I believe understanding is more important than memorization yet you still need to memorize at least. Read Bloom's taxonomy and you will see there what I'm trying to point out. You can't connect different points if you don't know the nature of these points. Sometimes all it takes is to rotely memorize first the points as dry as they are then try to understand them once you connect two or more points leading towards understanding.

It is very rare that higher education give you this skills. This is why employers don't want hire people without working experience after university. You need to teach them again.
