garage conversion to living space

So today, it's day one for me on this garage conversion, stripping out the old electrics from the garage and completely rewiring the room ready to convert this garage into a new utility room and playroom.
So when working on a garage conversion, I like to completely start from scratch and rewire the whole garage, including a brand-new ring main brand-new lighting circuit. It's important to note that with this garage conversion. The main consumer unit for the house is now not going to be that accessible for the future plans so we have to think about what else is gonna be changing when it comes to doing a job like this garage conversion, especially as we are now going to change it into a living space.
Turning a garage conversion into a living space is pretty straightforward. As long as you follow the formula, getting everything in place first time is essential.

Nice to have you back Mike and doing electrical for a change 😜. I use oval conduit sometimes on a job by job basis, more so if I’m thinking I will be back at some point to change things and can easily get cables pulled in and out 🤷🏼‍♂️

Cap the tails with unistrut, and bond the unistrut back to the MET. 2 gang skt to form a safe zone is a good idea🫡 Excellent job as always Sir 👍

Metal capping dates back to mechanical protection but the later reason for capping 1970s onwards was to prevent the plaster reacting with the insulation. Think the plasticizer reacting with the copper in cables between 1965-1972 it's the same principle. I mostly use all round back and oval conduit now as I get fed up of change orders causing a massive headache if I don't pre-empt them.

metal capping is good for helping cable finders find cables though as the metal will flag up very quickly before someone hammers a nail in

Great video, what are they doing with the gas pipe I do the same idea with the socket you can get thick plated metal capping to comply with the regs for the tails

In Ireland we have to use plastic conduit and chase them into the walls along with our backboxes or put conduit and backboxes onto wall direct if its being dry lined, but it is not acceptable to clip direct to walls. Takes a lot longer and people still drill into cables but the only advantage Id say we have of not being allowed to clip direct is it makes the property future proof allowing to pull the cables back up the conduit if needs be or add more cable down.

capping was used , because the lime in the old plaster would eat into the cable and cause it to degrade.

Look at that dust from cutting that ceiling ,,, no mask ,ear protection or nothing wouldn’t have people with no regards for health and safety working at my house not only putting themselves at risk but putting my health at risk as well ,no no no
