Barn Find Mercedes Benz SL R107 survivor - Will its V8 start? For this barn find, the car in question is a Mercedes built during what is widely regarded as the finest era for German robust engineering and build quality. Having owned a handful of 1980s era Mercs, and upon discovering the car was languishing only a few miles from where Jonny was born and raised, he had to film this convertible garage find.
We were contacted on the show by a viewer called Ben Drew, whose parents bought a 1981 R107 380 SL Merc when living in America during the 1990s. Ben was only a lad, but he remembers living in San Diego, and his Mum always fancying a 'Dallas spec' (or Beverly Hills Cop spec, depending on your preference) SL. His Dad has never been a car person, but agreed and they found this car for sale in a copy of Auto Trader. That was 1995.
Being a 380 it is a 3.8-litre V8 - the first of the then-new design alloy V8s - and being a US spec car, said 3.8 isn't the most powerful. US market cars were somewhat strangled for smog regs, which wouldn't be such an issue if Mercedes hadn't decided to use a single row cam chain (as opposed to a duplex). These were prone to failure, and many engines ended up lunching themselves and being replaced under warranty.

Thank you Adam. Got to say I was gutted (and tired!), and it is hard to see comments from people when they presume you can turn up to barnfinds with an RAC van full of spare parts and tools. I'm not a trained mechanic, and we do what we can with the tools and time we have. I intentionally don't recce the barn finds first, so that it remains authentic and honest. Thank you for enjoying the films. Jonny

@@TheLateBrakeShow For me, this is actually a huge part of the appeal of your barn find series. Sometimes you succeed and sometimes you don´t, but it is always very entertaining to watch the process. What you´re doing here is exactly what most of us would be able to do in a similar situation, not having a crack-team of specialists or bringing every possible tool and a load of parts to a barn in the middle of nowhere. Not knowing the outcome makes it so much more interesting to watch. The way you present this show makes it feel like I´m in the barn with you lot, having a look and getting my hands dirty. I love this type of content, so please don´t change your approach to it.

K-Jet really doesn't like being left to sit for years. The injectors need to be removed, pressure gauge attached and fuel pump jumped to just see what's what. There's a better than even chance the warm up regulator will need refurbing and a new set of injectors. Possibly also the meeting head although they can be made to come back to life with a bit of time in the oven on low and a soaking in acetone. It isn't a simple job, but once they're up and running and regularly used, will go for years.

Great fun! I wouldn't be surprised if the starter motor was the issue. Seemed like it was the weakest link, not able to operate at full speed. Might be the battery cables to it have broken down I suppose, not giving it enough current. Great cars. My dad's oldest mate had one in the 70s, always seemed unimaginably flash to me.

Oh bless you, fella - you looked absolutely exasperated... I was sat here, just willing the old girl to fire up - I imagine the accompanying cheer of success would've been something to behold...!! I guess we're just going to have to wait a wee bit longer for that moment, eh... The R107 SL holds a particular place in my heart. Back in '88, I got a job in a local Merc car sales showroom and the MD ran a 500SL in Blue Black metallic with cream leather interior - the classic MB combination. And it was in this car, in August 1988, that I took my, now wife, out on our 'engagement date' to a local restaurant where I proposed - thankfully, she said "yes"... ❤ So, thank you, Jonny, for bringing back such a wonderful memory - always great work, fella. 👍

Very nice! Top tip for storing a car long term, Jonny. I got this from an old bloke with a mint mk3 Zodiac that's been in storage for over 12 years. Leave the doors open & place several cheapo plastic shopping bags on the carpets, in the boot & engine bay. The rodents use them for nests & don't attack upholstery, wiring, etc! His mint Aldrige interior was testament to that. Cheers. Leigh.

These barn find series are my favourite Johnny. Not that I don't appreciate all the others. There's something special about meeting an owner of a car that's been put away for a long time and witnessing the emotional connection with the cars. It would have been epic to see this old gal running, but I reckon that mechanical fuel injection was to blame. They are a tempermental thing and I think after a good service, it should fire right up. As an owner-driver of Mercedes-Benzes for 20+ years--including one SL--I found this video interesting. That stated, it baffles me why anyone would not keep such a beautiful car in running condition. It always costs exponentially more to bring a neglected vehicle back into running condition. Either keep it in running condition & drive it & enjoy it, or sell it to someone who will & enjoy the money in another way. This is just common sense.

Always take a correct spec battery Jonny! Like most V8`s, these need a big chunk of battery to get them going. My Jag refuses to start with anything smaller than proper spec, even when jumped from another running at the same time, but with its proper battery, it spins over perfectly & jumps straight into life. Its possible removing one plug would have helped it spin over quicker & helped it start too. Also, I`m suspicious of the bitten plug leads (should have used a spark checker on each lead), & I`d have cleaned up the dizzy cap & rotor.

Only the US version had a weak chain (single row roller) but all of the V8's M116 and M117 are suseptable to chain related engine failures. I always check the chains on the various ones I work on ( I have 4 in the shop at the moment) by removing the covers, looking carefully at the left hand rails ,which break often and get swallowed up into the timing gear. The I turn the engines until the cam timing marks line up. I then read the timng damper near TDC.. Any reading between the '0' mark and 5 ATDC is near enough but more than that it's time for a new chain and tensioner rails. I was working on a '450SL' yesterday which was a LA delivered car, converted in 1978 to RHD but was actually a 350SL.... What is going to kill off a lot of the early 380's is the fact that first 380's are 88mm bore and rings etc are NLA .🙄😐.The next series are 92 mm and boring the blocks is a very labour intensive job that requires the Nikasil block to be heated then acid washed in the bore to expose the silicone.

There were 2 things I wish you’d done (unless you did them off-camera)…first off, I never saw you check for spark! To me, it sounded like the engine wasn’t getting either adequate or any spark. Next, I was wishing you would either remove the belt going to the alternator or at least loosen the belt and check the alternator to see if it had seized. At the end of the vid, I was yelling at the screen, “check for spark!!”

I was watching with my dad. It was always one of his favourites. Briefly explained your Mercedes interest and said "i wouldn't be surprised if he put a bid in for it" lol. The end you said you were tempted. Cracking show he was never really into TG but near the end was willing for it to turn over like I'm guessing we all we're lol. Great show and I'm sure if he wants to he won't have any problems with people interested in the car. Great show as ever, good video drop lol 😉

Bummer you didn’t get her going after all that effort but ye gave it a good go. I know with my 3l jeep if my battery isn’t a huge amperage she won’t start either. She was almost there but I’ve been in your position before with that slow engine turn. Very frustrating. Ignore the haters and smart asses Jonny, you are doing great content. Fla

hi jonny, inside most starter motors, there are 2 sets of carbon brushes, so starters get twice the amount of power flowing through them. this sounds like 1 set is duff, so only half the power, therefore only half the speed. we used to have an old transit that used to spin over at that speed, but it amazingly never failed to start. it was parked when the MOT ran out one winter, then wouldn't start in the spring, until the starter was repaired. a can of ether is the way to go, much better than petrol for that initial startup, + much easier to store/carry/use. it looked warm that day, did my "will it start" for the year on a cortina in kent last month, 37 degrees in shade, but it did spin over nice + fast.....
