1500W would be like a fart in the wind up here in Northern Michigan. I've got a 10KW ceiling heater and even it struggles on really cold days.

Yea, last year I used a 1500W milkhouse heater to keep some cats warm in my garage. It easily added a hundred to my utility bill every month without even trying. Electric is definitely not an efficient way to go.

They'd also benefit from insulating and air sealing the garage well if theyre going to spend money heating it.

Need one of these for my garage. My master bathroom is right above the garage, and it gets cold and freezes my pipes in the winter.
@mikecampanella19902 ай бұрын
Get your garage ceiling dense packed with cellulose. They drill holes in the ceiling and blow in cellulose to fill all of the joist cavities at a density where it won't sag. It will have you losing far less heat to your unheated garage and save your pipes. I had over ten degrees of difference in my bedroom floors after I had it done. It's not a very expensive process!

I insulated and finished my garage with drywall and it obviously made a huge difference in both summer and winter. I put a portable AC/heater with a hose to window vent and it works well but to not insulate first seems like a massive waste.

The issue with smart devices from China isn’t that they can see when you turn on your heater, it’s that the device is on your network. You’re guaranteeing them a connection to monitor your activity, potentially steal password, and even credit card info as well.
@justinmilla2 ай бұрын
Get a good router like unifi and you can carve out a separate network with firewall for your connected devices and just like that technology saves you from technology.

A Colorado power company required customers have smart thermostats in their homes. When there was a heat wave, the customer couldn't lower the temp in their homes to what they wanted. The power company had taken control of their thermostat. That's why I wouldn't have any smart devices in my home.

"Smart" devices can be hacked and possibly compromise your home network and your other connected devices. Also 'smart' devices companies can discontinue their support and is some cases completely stop your device from even performing the function for which you purchased it.
@baxt14122 ай бұрын
In this case I imagine it would only be bricked for smart functions. Doubtful it would stop the basic heater function
@jeffweber82442 ай бұрын
Equally bad, the hacked device can be controlled. E.g. an adversary could turn the heater on or off, allowing pipes to freeze or just wasting energy.
@roadracermark79462 ай бұрын
Smart means control. They will decide if you can use something smart in the future.

"Smart" is fine if it's a very basic computer board that's cheap to replace and just gives you an app. Never getting an alexa though that listens to everything I say. Not about who gets the info, about them keeping and storing your info and the agencies who can access or buy it.

Smart devices pose a security risk because they can be used to gain access to your internal network. While your ISP's router typically acts as a decent firewall, introducing devices that 'phone home' bypasses some of this protection. This opens up a potential entry point for attackers to access other devices like laptops, desktops, security cameras, or even the router’s internal interface. It's not so much government surveillance you need to worry about, but rather cybercriminals looking to target small businesses for ransomware attacks.

Smart is fine if the device can be controlled locally by a hub that doesn't phone home. I use Home Assistant and am down to my last couple of devices that send data outside of my network. It's faster and private this way

Smart devices and spying. The app has access to your phone, the connection to Google or Alexa let's them track the rest of your home and listen to all of your conversations, and they may be able to remotely disable devices to cause chaos. Not just know if you are heating. I have smart devices, I just have a better understanding of what the potential risks are.
