That concrete will support anything you will put on it . Good job. Watch all your videos; Nice you give temperature both ways. Stops confusion 50 years ago I worked US Military in Bavaria. Used to be a whole lot colder there. Don't how it used to be in the Pyrenees.

The cleaner not having a little brush on it would probably result in a class action laws suit here in the USA. ;-) The project is coming along very well, especially for a crew of two!

That was funny - I see all the cool gadgets and the ease of using materials in the US - so jealous. Plus I have to try and translate what I need to the builders merchants - sometimes it is a little testing.

Keep in mind the "summer" diesel will gell in winter temperatures. The are anti-gel additives I would recommend putting into the diesel tank.
@HomesteadingUncontained
@HomesteadingUncontained Жыл бұрын
We don't tend to get freezing temps here, so the diesel should be OK but I have encountered that before when I bought an old diesel car with winter temps -40ºC below..... had to be towed each morning down the road by a petrol truck just to get it started 🤣

We always used 'duplex' nails when forming. Much easier to strip since the second nail head remains proud of the wood - no getting on your knees to squint to find the screw head that is full of hard concrete. Just bring a crowbar to pull the nails and pop the forms apart. I'm really curious why you've chosen shipping containers for your main home design. The few container builds I've seen appear to be disasters - it's a lot of non-standard work required to fit in things like doors/windows and attach cladding/architrave etc etc (REALLY think about how those details will be done - it's quite difficult - how do fit a 6" wide door or window to a 1/8" piece of wobbly metal? As soon as you start cutting holes for windows/doors etc, shipping containers quickly lose their integrity/rigidity). Unless you've got experience with metalwork, I suspect it will be much more difficult/expensive/frustrating than you expect. There's a reason why almost nobody uses them (builders aren't dumb - they know costs - and if using shipping containers were cheaper, they'd use them). I STRONGLY advise that you rethink using shipping containers and use conventional (lumber/masonry) framing instead - vastly more forgiving/versatile. And I doubt a metal container building could meet Passive House standards anyway - at least not easily (and PH isn't cheap - very problematic for first-time budget builders!). Consider 'Pretty Good House' standard instead - it's meant to get near-passive house efficiency at lower cost using easily-available materials. Good news is Europeans have access to efficient, high-quality windows/doors at relatively affordable prices. If you haven't found Matt Risinger's Build Show YT channel, take a look. Especially at Jake Bruton's content (he's a very practical, cost-conscious builder who specializes in passive house building (Matt is mostly a luxury home builder so his buildings are often $$$$$). Besides the Build Show YT channel, they also have a website (buildshownetworkdotcom) with more content. While geared towards a US audience, I think Jake offers some innovative and very practical cost-effective advice for building efficient homes (honestly, I'd try and contact him and pick his brain, even pay him for a 1 hour consultation if needed - money well-spent methinks. Aarowbuilder.com). Both Matt and Jake are on Instagram too.

Cheers Arthur - the main reason at the moment for the use of containers is to give me the structure, the metal frame. After working on this garage I may opt to have the same company fabricate a steel frame for me for the house - I will price up both methods. I am an engineer but not a structural engineer so designing a wooden frame house with the correct loads etc is a little daunting for me. My last house I build was a kit and was constructed by the kit company and handed over to me to finish. This is the first I have deigned and build from scratch. I am still 50/50 as to what I will choose. As long as the outside design stays the same the local authority are happy as there are no rules on how it is constructed. I do watch Matt Risinger and also the Perkins Brothers. I will check out the others you mention. Very interesting.

I hope that you are having a great New Year's holiday. It looks great. I think that the base gravel will washout. If you compacted it good it would not move. It will take any water and it will soak into the ground. You have plenty of drainage to take any surface water away.

Great progress guys, I’d definitely be trying to get that bottom board out… if you take it out and any gravel does come out it won’t be an issue anyway as it’ll fill with concrete when you do the rest. It’s a minor detail in the grand scheme but could cause cracks or stains etc in the future

One thing, may not be an issue in this case, I think your drainage pipe is installed in the wrong direction. usually it's installed with the female part of a joint at the high end, if you want to connect this into other units like an inspection chamber which would have an angled channel with female high inputs or any bends this could cause problems later. It's definitely that way in CZ and DE and relates to the flow of water, which you want to run from the upper pipe to the inside of the lower pipe. Might be different in France? Hope it's not an issue with it now backfilled with concrete, if you need to fix it then you could cut off the female joint at the bottom and apply a bevel. At the top it's more tricky but you can heat the pipe and push the male end of a new length there, practice that first. Keep up the good work and this great content.
@qnner
@qnner Жыл бұрын
You are correct. Installing PVC pipe this way creates little "dams" along the path downwards and it will not clear the water properly. Finding that glue in FI is a struggle as most of our PVC pipes have sealing lip or gasket. Nice to watch your series as you tackle building conundrums. Hope all the best for coming years!
@richcarne
@richcarne Жыл бұрын
Now I think about it, are you sure this grey pipe is designed to be buried externally? We use an orange/terracotta PVC pipe for underground drainage know as KG that can be buried up to 4m deep and can take loads like concrete and other traffic above. All grey pipes are internal to the building. With the loose un-compacted sand below all this concrete the pipe can be cracked. whilst all those US channels are nice, they use very different materials and approach from us in Europe I suggest getting local advice on drainage solutions.
@HomesteadingUncontained
@HomesteadingUncontained Жыл бұрын
The grey PVC pipe is all good for underground here - it is the only pipe available. I will put a junction on the end anyway before the inspection chamber as it is a myriad of different pipes going into it. This particular one is purely the exit of the French drain from behind the wall, not sewage or heavy rain water. It should be OK.

Question? Why didn’t you tie in both drains into the first pipe you concreted in?
@HomesteadingUncontained

The rear drain goes around the back and side. the front surface drain I did afterwards just to not over complicate the initial pour....it was too difficult to get my head around it all in one go 😬

Don't hand dig when you've got a mini-x on site! Just move on close to the forms, turn your tracks parallel to the forms, put your teeth back on swing your cab at the slab and your main boom the opposite direction so that your dig line is as parallel to the form as possible then pull parallel to the slab. All your boulders should just roll out easy AND your tracks will move in the direction of work flow. Don't give up so easy, it is worth figuring out how to run that thing. Just pretend you have no other option but to use it, you will get very good if you do that.

Exactly. "Why have a dog and bark yourself" as the old saying goes.
@HomesteadingUncontained

Trouble is, I wedged the bigger boulders up against the form boards. So the teeth of the bucket could not grab them from behind to pull. Also my boom does not have the side movement (hind sight I wish I had ordered that option). Mini Ex gets a good workout in the next video though - to the point of failure ☹️

Good concrete should have less water in the mixture, like a damp soil, not like fluid. Another thing is, that sand under the pipe wasn't compacted at all, so the concrete that you pour on top will crack a lot.
@HomesteadingUncontained
@HomesteadingUncontained Жыл бұрын
It was very minimal sand, just to level the pipe - the ground underneath is clay so it is pretty tough. With the amount of rebar going in, it should be fine.

I dont think it was a good idea of putting that Cement around the edge of that pad on that stone. Because Water may get under that. And with the concrete on that stone under the pad. The water wont have no way too drain out. Youll end up with a Underground Pond under your pad. And if it freezes It will crack the concrete pad. Normally You put stone around the pad that say any water will drain out...Just a suggestion. I would hate to have that pad crack with all the work you put into it. This is just a suggestion..But other then that its lookin good ..

it is well drained now and it will be surrounded by the driveway and pathway. It should be OK, plus it rarely goes below zero here. fingers crossed. 🤞
