First half of video, Me thinking 'alright, lets see how it does with stronger shocks to make up for the loss of resistance from the bushings. Garage54: Let's remove the shocks.
@AgneDei3 жыл бұрын
Very good idea. Those bearing bushes work like super low resistance racing metal bushings (those also have zero play, no dampening effect, and way less resistance than rubber bushings). Those would work great with super hard springs (170-200% of factory tension), and high end shock absorber's with regulated negative rebound dampening (that fixes the suspension knock, and usually offers a bit more travel). Additionally on racing versions of suspensions for normal cars generally the suspension arms/wishbones always get reinforced with additional welded metal plates to make them resistant to twisting and breaking in weak points). One last thing to get a complete suspension package is addition of hard anti-roll bars with hard polyurethane bushings (due to the way they move even on racing cars those usually don't get metal bushings). At the end of the day you'd end up with a tarmac track ultimate driver's machine lada, epic :D
@vincentrobinette15073 жыл бұрын
They're called "Heim joints". They allow rotational movement on any axis, but don't have any longitudinal play whatsoever. The only reason they're not used in street cars, is that the couple road noise into the cars chassis, making a very noisy ride. The do, however maintain suspension geometry, and would make it handle like a sports car.

As someone who just finished replacing the bushings in their radius arms with heim joints (similar concept), this is actually very informative!! My takeaways are that if he had proper bump stops and limit straps set so the shock wasn't bottoming out or overextending, and if he added a bit more damping with some more serious shocks this would have worked incredibly well. The way the wheel was able to cycle up and down so rapidly on the small bumps resembled something with MUCH more serious suspension then that little thing (8:03). One thing he didn't mention though is that I'm sure it would transfer MUCH more road vibration, clunks, rattles, to the cab since bushings dampen that as well. Guess that was the least of his worries on a road like that haha. Never seen this channel before, thanks for bringing this guys antics into english for us! 👍

What a cool idea to replace the bushings with bearings. It was very interesting how it improved the performance over the rough road like you said, except it was just a little too soft since normally the bushings resist the movement so the shock has to do less. It sounds like if you just put in stiffer shocks to make up for the bushings being bearings, it might actually be a good upgrade for cars in general for high performance handling over rough roads at least if not also for racing and everything. It would make sense because you would have such more precise control over the car suspension travel and you could really tune the shock to perfection without having to take into account springy rubber intermediate parts affecting the suspension tune. I wonder how it works for cars with the aftermarket poly hard bushings. Then it's basically just a journal bearing at that point?

There's a reason to use rubber bushings. They can deform when non-pivotal forces are applied to them as in braking, cornering and acceleration. The only bearings which can do what is needed are spherical bearings that allow movement in 360 degrees. They didn't use spherical bearings or the difference in the ride and handling characteristics wouldn't be so noticeable.

I actually always wondered this. It wouldn't be reliable, but freeing up articulation should always be a good thing. Never thought that the bushings might actually be part of the process, by limiting articulation. Better shocks, or better yet proper hydraulic dampers, might make this work short term for say...a track car. zero unwanted rebound or deflection, and fully smooth articulation would be a boon on a track. Might need better antisway bars too.

that's actually the reason for going to urethane bushings in 4xx4 suspensions. the urethane bushings hold up to the rigors of heavy duty suspension working and allow for a "bearing" type of movement without the need to totally seal out water. solid rubber bushings are great for suspensions with less travel and the need for more precise alignments.

Yep, right down a narrow alley with brick walls on either side is exactly where I want to drive a car with marginal control. 😲

by far the funniest video the intro had me dying and the stupid grin on his face when he was showing us the bearings like he already no its going to be a bad idea

i Would love to see this setup with the bearing bushings with slightly stiffer springs, heavier dampers and stiffer anti roll-bars. I think it would handle even better

lift the suspension taller, keep the suspension with shocks and bearings and you have a rally lada or well, something close enough IMO

Wow, nice experiment! I was expecting the rear to be broken as the rods are rotating around two axis as the wheels are moving differently. btw the front track was widened during the action by wheel spacers or similar. Normally you can not see the ball joints on Lada. Keep the good ideas! Put twice as long wishbones!
