I buy compost from our city by the bag and hand toss it on my yard, wood and all. That wood product breaks down pretty quickly and adds to the moisture retention. I will keep throwing it down by hand. I came here to see if I needed one. I do, but I don’t. 😂. Our compost is heated to temps that kill the seeds. I’ve never had an issue with weeds in my yard.

I got a similar one called Vevor, It’s a great tool, I got it for $25 off Marketplace, but there under $100 on Amazon now. Makes spreader compost easy. I always used it after I aerate and overseed. Helps to add nutrients to the soil, and just a nice layer to hide the expensive seed from the birds.

I am really curious how well that spreader works for sand. I plan to top dress with sand about every year, finishing with the 30"-36" leveling rake. I suspect that it falls through too quickly, but i see that it is listed as an option. I can see it working a bit better for top soil, where it has a mix of sand and peat/organic matter.

Heads up - this product will NOT work with mushroom compost. The diamond grates are too close together. After a while it just bunches up and nothing gets spread. Had to eventually transition to spreading by shovel. I’m sure it’s better with peat moss however.

I've had a Lanzie 24 inch spreader for two seasons. I use it once a year. But it makes that job much better. Loading it is a pain. But I like how it keeps the bigger particles out of the turf. Only 2 feet wide makes for many passes. I'd rather have a wider one & pull it with a lawn tractor. You should use gloves when handling "stuff" like compost or even seeds. Do you not use hearing protection when using a mower?
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 2 ай бұрын
@@ronstrong9560 hey Ron! Definitely many passes. I tried using gloves initially but in order to open and close the clasps you needed your finger tips to work them. Gloves made this a lot more work so I just said forget them! I would have been taking them off and putting them on hundreds of times

It was rediculus trying to spread peet moss with this thing. Not even a 100' single pass. I needed over 40 after installing a new septic system . Holes are wayyyy to large for peet. You mentioned sand. Are you joking? You wouldn't get a 6' strip with that. For finer materials like peet you need to use 1/4" hardware cloth painstakingly sectioned on with galvanized wire. You will have lots of peet nuggets that may break up slowly to go over unevenly spread areas, which sort of worked. Major PITA for peet. I would never recommend for that purpose. These are mostly marketed as compost spreaders for a good reason. Of the 4 or 5 brands I saw all had the same size diamond shaped holes. Only one manufacturer mentioned using it for peet, so there you go. Now if I want to spread compost, I'll have to take the 1/4" mesh off, that took me an hour and a half to put on. I wish there was something better for homeowner use. Thats my 2 cents. Great Channel BTW.

Buy coarse peat moss, stuff like Sungro white label. Or read what is available in your area. Peat mosses are available in many grades or degrees of fineness. Saying it is no good without telling us what product you used is less helpful for others.
