Just wanted to provide some more context after seeing some comments. I decided to go on the ol' Wayback Machine and compare the release of the Best Adjustable DB content and price changes for Powerblock. They actually weren't as close together as I assumed when we recorded this review. Nearly every company has been raising prices this year as well, so it's not surprising a USA-made product like the Elite series jumped in price. I stand by the comment that I think Powerblocks and NÜOBELLs are getting closer in competing for the best value spot, but I hate making a statement that varies from reality. Hopefully, prices decrease in 2022 as owning a home gym continues to get more expensive across the board.

I just purchased the nuobells (80lb) and they are set to arrive later today. I chose them just because the design allows me to use them for the same uses as a traditional dumbbell . Also for drop sets and faster pace workouts you just can’t beat the speed of weight change

First day impressions:It arrived in a waist high box. kzbin.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 Each dumbbell was in its own foam box within the shipping box. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

I have the original Powerblock 90s (I think I bought them in 1995). I have absolutely used and abused them for getting close to 30 years now. They were a 1 time purchase that cost less than a year's gym membership. I've been through multiple benches and racks during this same time but my Olympic Weights (bought used from a gym that I used to work in back in college) and my Powerblock dumbbells have stood up through everything. Just last year I had the plastic casing on the outside of one of the clips break when my son dropped them at the end of a set. I super-glued it back on and it's fine now, but even that didn't affect the usability. I can testify to Powerblock's durability. They have essentially lasted me for my whole life and I expect them to continue to (I'm 50). Nothing beats free iron weights. They really last a lifetime if you invest in them.

I love the Nuö Bell. I started off with a pair of 50’s and loved them so much that I bought a second pair of 80’s so I could super set without having to go back to the cradle. It was still cheaper than buying a full set of 5-80lbs dumbbells. It would be great if they went up to 100 lbs but imo anything heavier than 80 I would probably feel better if it was a solid dumbbell with no moving parts. They only downside about the nuö bell is I am afraid to drop the weights at the end of the set like I used to do at the gym but I find that my lifts are a lot cleaner and more controlled because I don’t want to damage the mechanism.. so I’ll take it! The other advantage that wasn’t talked about nearly enough is how the nuö bell actually looks and feels like a real dumbbell. The flat ends and the size of the dumbbell as you adjust it is really second to none!

I love the durability of my powerblocks but one thing not mentioned people should be aware of is that the weights are connected via those outside tubes, not the central handle. It may sound trivial but you can feel a difference in how the weight is distributed around your hand rather than through the central handle.

Love all the options now, and your reviews are very comprehensive. I've had my Powerblocks since 2001. THOUSANDS of workouts. Still going strong. Never had a problem with the cage design and quite like the square form factor (never had one roll off a bench). One thing I don't see in your reviews is stands. My Powerblocks came with super durable, steel, angled, thigh high stands. If I have to sit them on the ground, a lot of exercises become full body (I have to do 160lb squats before and after my bench press). Love to see the stands these other manufacturers sell.

Even the noobs (which is me) will outgrow 50lbs real quick. Buying tips: I bought from Smrtft and got them on free shipping promotion, which they do periodically (especially around holidays). Also, for some reason, they didn't charge sales tax to my state, which saved far more than shipping. The sales tax discount was not true for all retailers I looked at. @@GarageGymReviews Something else I like about the PowerBlocks is that you can use the lower outer fittings as double handles. They work fine even when held upside down and for close grip skull crushers or RDL's the two-handed approach works really well. For goblets or waiter curls I use the outer plates and bind them together with a velcro strap, and suddenly you have four dumbbells for supersets.

I've had PowerBlocks for over a decade and they are still like new minus some missing paint in the corners of the plates. As of right now, I can't put that kind of trust in Nuobells. But the ONE thing that really keeps me with PowerBlocks is the 2.5lb increments, without having to use some kind of magnetic change plates... which I still have to use occasionally on the power blocks if I'm looking for a 1.25 lb increment. For me to consider Nuobells in the future I need 3 things. 1) Time-proven reliability.... 2) Smaller increments.... 3) A bit higher weight capacity.

I ended up selling my PowerBlock pros last year and got the Nuobells. Personally, I just didn’t like the boxy feel of the PB and sure there’s the “2.5 lb increments”, but having only one added weight in just threw off the weight distribution in movements like a curl, which I didn’t really like either. I often include super sets in my workouts and another issue I had with the adder weights was the fact that switching them out to go up or down by 5 lbs definitely took a little bit. If it was just a quick 10 lb increment switch (say 40 to 20) then it was fine but otherwise it took a while with the PowerBlocks. I love the Nuobell’s feel and quick adjustments and I haven’t had any issues with the adjustment mechanism. With that said, I never throw my weights around, even when I had the PowerBlocks so they should last well.

Fan of the Nuo bell here. I've had no problem with them for the 6 months I've owned, not really a surprise there. I do agree that fragility is somewhat of a concern, as it's on my mind when I'm finishing my set and putting down... but as others point out, that means a bit more control brought into the movement, and the weights have been great with careful use. They switch great, feel solid, great knurled grip, I love the stand I got for them separately. I really enjoy using them and hope they last me a good long time. If they did a 100+ lb version, I would hope for more metal parts and a premium price point to support and lend confidence in the extra weight and size.

Holding up like a champ, same nice clicky switch, fully functional in all movements, no noticeable degradation. I have the same green 80lb. Nuobell set (with the stand), it's my favorite piece of gym equipment, I use it every day I work out. The minor annoyances are the bit of play between the plates when you're lifting and it's sometimes tricky to put them back in the cradle, especially with heavier weight. Instead of trying to perfectly slot them back in I lean the bottom of the dumbbell against the closer plates in the cradle to make some more room then lower the top end in. No idea if this will help with longevity of the components but I take a moment to click on each weight increment rather than just quickly twisting through to the desired weight. I considered the Powerblocks but I wanted a traditional dumbbell, the Nuos are so pleasant and efficient to work out with that it was worth the possible sacrifice in durability compared to the more utilitarian options. If anything breaks I am confident I can get the replacement part necessary, but the only issues I've heard about were shipping damage. People who know they were careless in tossing them around don't complain.

Recently purchased the Nuobells and love them so far. To me the biggest issue with adjustable dumbbells is the fiddlyness and time it takes to change them out. It’s the last thing I want to deal with when working out. The Nuobells are as fast and no-fuss as it gets. They’re also quite solid and balanced, unlike the clanky ones I’ve had before. Time will tell about the durability, but I’m not the type to slam things back into their trays and twist harder if something seems stuck, so I suspect they’ll last me a good long while.

I don't understand how people talk about the Powerblocks being "well made" and "indestructible", but then fault the Nuobell's for using plastic mechanisms when SO DOES THE POWERBLOCK. The entire system is based around a super flimsy-feeling plastic peg -- the thing he slides in and out in the video. The system relies on the shear strength of that plastic -- the same plastic that can get brittle and weaker with time. And it's that plastic which is actually HOLDING THE WEIGHTS. On the Nuobell, the weights are being held by a metal rod, and it's just the mechanism that MOVES that rod which is made of plastic.

I’ve had no issues with the nuobell so far but like others have commented, me being aware of their (relative) fragility has changed how I use dumbbells and their role in my workout. It’s quite difficult for me to utilize the nuobells as a primary chest exercise (I bench about 290/300 max right now, so I would be able to take advantage of the 80 lbs as a higher rep option). However, instead the nuobells have become a way for me to lift with much more control and stability, which is the point of dumbbells anyways. I would like to see a 100 lb option but I bet there’s some construction limitations that make mass producing 100s and up difficult.

NÜOBELL No Brainer for me, especially with the new price tag of powerblock. Powerblock looks clunky, looks and probably feels uncomfortable. I don't think NÜOBELL will have any major issues with durability. Yes, would be nice for NÜOBELL to go up to 100-120 pounds, but 80 pounds in the home gym I think will be more than enough for 80% of the people. Thank you for amazing review.

I'm currently working on acquiring a full set of fixed dumbbells since that what makes sense for me and my garage. As far as adjustable dumbbells go, while both these seem like great options, I can't see the need for anything more than adjustable dumbbell handles, whether they 1" spinlock handles or 2" Olympic. I get it, they're a pain in the ass to load and unload, and can be awkward to use, but they are durable, versatile, and affordable. Before I started on my fixed set, I have (and still sometimes use) the Olympic handles and they just work. Better yet, the weight for those can be used on my barbell and my various plate loaded pieces.

The knurlings of my nuobell started to rust quite badly, and thankfully it was still under warranty so the suppliers sent me new handles which are easily replaceable. Yes. Or more accurately, you have to be somewhat precise. It's not super difficult, it's just something you can't do absentmindedly. If you look at 6:45, he had it on the lightest weight and 7:15, he's got heavier weight on and he fumbles a bit trying to get it right. I don't think that it's a problem. That's just how they are. But at the heavy weights when I've just finished a set and the dumbell is falling out of my hand, I put it down on the floor otherwise there's a risk of back injury.

If you've got a home gym, chances are you prioritise efficiency and versatility in your workouts, so speed of change is probably your #1 or #2 critieria. Once you've tried the Nuobells, it's hard to use anything else. I've had 32kg Nuobells for 2 years and used them 3x p.w. They're the 3rd set of adjustables i've owned, with the first being Powerblocks and the second, Ironmasters with the 2nd and 3rd add-on kits. While Nuobells have some quirks, and require some maintenance to facilitate smooth changes, the feel, comfort and changing speed make them the clear winner. I'm over 50 and don't lift as heavy anymore, so don't require the superior weight capacity of the Ironmasters (with add-on-kits), nor their ability to withstand the occasional drop. Finally, some commenters seem pre-occupied with the potential to damage Nuobells if you drop them. Firstly, if you're in the habit of dropping dumbbells, you might want to think about lifting lighter. Don't pick it up if you can't put it down. Controlling weight is a key part of strength training. Secondly, if you must drop because of say, a joint injury, you can easily build simple timber drop boxes filled with scrap rubber. I made these for use with my ironmasters and they worked a treat. Thirdly, if you drop any adjustable dumbbell other than the ironmasters or spinlocks, you'll potentially damage their adjustable mechanism. You can damage Powerblocks by dropping them, believe me.

After spending 2-3 years testing various adjustable dumbbells through the pandemic I found the best combination for me is the 5-50lb personal trainer set powerblocks and the 90lb ironmasters. It’s pricey yes but you get the best of both worlds. The quick change for the lighter sets but the stability and ease of racking with the ironmasters. Trying to carefully place a 70lb dumbbell in the nested set of powerblocks I found difficult vs the ironmasters just placing them on the stand. It was these little things I found that I liked. I loved nuobells but it broke on me several times and I just can’t run the risk of something like this failing on me. Until the connector pieces are made with metal or something more durable than plastic I will reconsider maybe the gen 2 nuobells if they make it.

I have power blocks, like you mentioned, I've had the around 15yrs. Yes they are big and bulky! But I was very happy with them. "HOWEVER" what I found is that ear that bolts to the rod, that connects the two plates together is not steel. It's just molded rubber. I found out because I had to move them from one room to another. My set weighs I think 127lbs so I broke them dwn to move them. Big Mistake! I guess after so many yrs the rubber got brittle and the ear broke off. Something to thing about, had they made that ear part of the casting they'd never break! I'm sure they've taken that into account.
