Fantasy phylogeny is the fabulously fun. The lore goes deep. Back in 1989, 'Dragon Magazine #150', Stephen Inniss wrote an article about the Mind Flayer homeworld. Here, he suggested that carrion crawlers might be the larval form of something. It also suggests that carrion crawlers are somehow related to illithids. Fun to think of garbugs as being the arboreal cousin of the deep sea chuul, both developing carapace in their final life stage. I like to think that somehow in the seas of time, a wizard is trying to ship live illithid tadpoles, putting them in just the right stressful conditions to cause them to metamorphose into tiny, carapaced crustaceans: their adult form. The truth that the elder brains don't want you to know. *Cue Futurama "Popplers" episode*

My favorite tinfoil hat theory is that carrion crawlers are closely related to the "serpent" which occupies the head of the chuul. This is the first time I've heard of the garbug and I love it as the other side of the equation. I choose to believe that carrion crawlers ancestors started out as a tiny parasite, but evolved to be gigantic scavengers as a result of deep sea gigantism. Like the relation between the tongue-eating louse and the Giant Isopod. I must say, I love that your story also includes carrion crawlers as neotenous nymphs. Firstly because it makes their caterpillar body shapes make sense. Secondly because the one other creature in the Forgotten Realms which has a giant neotenous version is the Neothelid. And carrion crawlers sharing a common ancestor with illithids feels good, lore-wise.

Correct me if I'm wrong (it's been a while), but wasn't it established that Chuul were the bio-engineered creations of the Aboleths as muscle? Or was that strictly Pathfinder lore? Then again with those early D&D modules like Barrier Peaks having a crashed alien vessel there's no telling what weird shit got loose.
@anotheruser92242 ай бұрын
@@theblocksays You are not wrong. 5e lore makes the chuul an aboleth experiment, designed to collect magic items. 3.5 lore described the chuul as the creation of a wizard named Ashranezr, who lived on an island and played Dr. Moreau until death. Maybe Ashranezr was an aboleth. Why not? Both times, the chuul are described as a united creature - part tentacled-brain-parasite - part giant crayfish-like thing. I enjoy having occasional alien technology pop up. If you meet a lizardfolk priestess with a mechanical arm that is rusted in place and packed with mud, you immediately know she has a backstory. If you can coax out of some of her tale, perhaps there is another wizard playing Dr. Moreau, callously amputating limbs and attaching found alien technology to the citizens of the swamp. Trying to get the machines to work again. You immediately has a detestable, disgusting villian set up in the wizard. And if you have spells that regrow limbs maybe you have a new friend. (And a rusty Gauss gun.)
@anotheruser92242 ай бұрын
@@theblocksays I fit the lore together with the chuul being the result of aboleth combining the ancestor of carrion crawlers (the larval form of something) with an giant arthropod. Perhaps a modified garbug? I also like to think that the Mindflayers are the future descendents of chuul parasite. The whole thing feels like Larry Niven's Bandersnatch, as the livestock are the only leftovers of an empire. (I also think that Niven's Grogs are the fate that we can eventually expect for Mindflayers.) Imagine being sent into the future and coming back, not to a Planet of the Apes, but a to a Planet of the Bovine Tapeworms. That is how it must feel for the aboleth. No wonder they insist that they have no idea where illithids came from.

Aren’t these the origin of the tyranid termagaunt? You could take all of the various crustacean monsters, add them to the mind flayers and make Tyranids for D&D. I don’t think it would be all that difficult. It would be a good counter for the spider-worshipping Drow.

Blood Feeders, .. Dig large pit to crawl in, fill with wood and cover in render down fat into oil and mix with lye. Place swealing pigs and some blood letting to draw predators. Once the bugs are crawling in the pit with side air flow holes to roll up in with plenty wetted down damp hay which will mold, cover with heavy netting and lite the pile. The wet hay will create a lot of smoke choking the air causing lung damage. As for the effects of the blazing bone fire, since it is in a pit .. just add water or dirt cover after the bugs are dead and harvest charcoal after site is cooled. Bacon fried ants/crayfish ? Now humans have a history of .. trophy .. hunting and importing and eating exotic animals. And people with our current global market collect dried sun-bleached crab shells .. so, .. AJ I offer up this spell in your honor: FLAVORFUL LIBATION- 2nd level wizard, conjuration. The wizard creates a delicious potation that magically appears in his hand. A +2 drinking straw or greater is a material component. If this palatable elixir is consumed while the wizard is studying a magical tome for which an intelligence check is required, he gains a +2 on his roll. The drinking straw is destroyed upon the spells expiration. However, if the player rolls a 1 he has spilt the drink on the magical tome and destroyed it. I’ll let you flesh out the details..
