My mom found a bench someone was throwing away and has wanted to restore it. You have given me some great ideas on how to restore it for her. I never thought of using used oil for a finish. You did a wonderful job and the bench came out beautiful. Thank you for sharing this project. Just subscribing from Mercer, PA

Used motor oil has its place on fences and posts but I can't say it had much eye appeal on the bench. A nice maple stain might have looked better with the white cast iron.

I agree, the video has great ideas, but used motor oil for something that will be touched by hands and rubbed by clothes.... not the best of them.

I just need to know where did you get lumber and if I go to lumber store what should I order. I can’t find replacement lumber on amazon under $300 that’s ridiculous. I can go buy 2 more at that price.
@BernhardHofmann6 жыл бұрын
Nice work mate. Please consider a dust mask though, especially if you're working with treated timbers like deck boards. Oh, and only burn them outside; they're full of nasties. I'm loving the engine oil idea though; I've got a lot of that in the garage looking for a use and now I have it! Big thumbs up. :)
@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP6 жыл бұрын
I know I should use a dust mask I always use one when working with mdf but often forget with everything else as for the engine oil try it on the wood first some woods I've found don't soak it in so well other than that it works great on outside projects good luck buddy

Sharpen, I have two bench ends and looking to buy slats etc. I am missing the piece of metal that runs between the metal ends. It’s a metal metal rod that gives the whole thing stability. What is it called and where can I get a replacement?

Thank you for this video. I have a single seater cast iron outdoor chair I am going to do up. I liked the idea of using the (used?) engine oil and I presume it doesn't mark clothing when it has dried. I don't have the tools or workshop you have but your video has been an inspiration.
@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP5 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks very much just make sure you buff the oil of and give it time to soak in the only problem I've come across is after about 18 month outside it will need to be repainted good luck

@@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP Thank you. Can I use used engine oil?
@mandiegarrett17065 жыл бұрын
@@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP Great video and idea on use the "used engine oil". To make it last longer, what do you think about using wood sealer like Polyurethane after "used engine oil" dries? Have you tried that or does the "used engine oil" will have some kind of chemical reaction to the sealer and would not work. Thank you.

What is the best way to line up the slats and the metal frame? I have a bench almost exactly the same as this one, but I cannot get everything to line up properly. Everytime I try it comes out wrong. I haven't drilled the holes yet because all the slats just don't line up. Any help would be appreciated. thank you.
@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP6 жыл бұрын
Hi Catherine I must admit it's not the easiest thing to do I cut all my slats to the right length then bolted the top back one on then put the steel rod across the underneath then bolted just one length on the bottom and it sort of pulled it all together but don't worry to much about the measurements I've done a few of these and the measurements are abit of sorry can't help much more apart from your not alone it is tricky cheers paul

You DON'T wipe down wood with old burnt motor oil. That is so stupid. What he should've done Is do a burnt wood treatment then used a thin coat of polyurethane.
