I really appreciate the inclusion of Sarah, she gives a realistic view of how difficult some of the stuff is that you make look easy. Kind of like putting an average person in the olympics for comparison.

I sanded 25 yrs of teak and mahogany, sand clean and varnish repeat many times on yachts. You guys did such a great job and together , very refreshing as lately people vlogs have been picking up distasteful comments. Good for you

my wife and I have this exact Edwardian cast iron bench frame. We replaced the slats with white oak slats. We used a oak stretcher on the bottom versus the angled iron seat support. Ours also had the curved iron center support. Yours tuned out great

I like this colab work with your wife. With both of you working on it, it makes a wonderful present for grandparents. I was going to ask if it was for yourselves as it's make a nice item in your own garden or yard, something you worked on together. I fully understand the struggle when she stands on a box for extra height I, myself, a really short woman standing at 4ft 9 in.

I too have have two old reclaimed cast-iron bench ends. But not the wooden slats. Nor do I have the metal 'straps', or the nuts n bolts. Think I'll watch your video, though... might help me with my restoration. Thanks for sharing.

The strap is just a piece of iron or steel you can make yourself with a torch and hammer

Where can I buy a replacement for that middle back beam? I've purchased other benches and they are either missing or broken. I'm also needing the underneath support beams. Help! :)

It is just a strap of 1/16" steel with holes drilled at every slat and bent to match the shape.

What did you do to protect the cast iron from rusting? I noticed you only power washed the iron. I have a bench I am workin on for someone and I am using a wire brush attachment on my drill to knock off rust.

I use a self-etching primer. As long as it's just surface rust that will set it in nicely. And then coat it with a good extra year paint.

What size did you cut the slats to. I'm repairing this same bench, but it didn't have boards. I'm mainly focused on the width. Thank you if you see this and reply.

Most of them were 2 in but the ones around the tight radius were inch and a half on mine. You should just be able to measure from center of screw hole to center of screw hole and then subtract a little bit for the Gap you want in between them.

Great video! I have an antique garden bench I'm restoring and need the metal supports that connect the cast iron sides to the bench wood beam on the underside. Do you know where I can find these?

Those are just straps of steel. You can bend them to the shape pretty easily. You can find similar strapping at most big box stores.

Very nice job. I have the exact bench I want to make nice. Cool to use no power tools but at 72 and female I don't think I can. Do you think having Lowes cut the wooden slats would work if I just replaced them? I know wood is much more expensive than 2 years ago.

I have a similar bench but it’s sort of like a swing but it has the wooden slats and they are so old I’d like to do the same thing that you did what kind of wood do you use?

If it's outside I would suggest a white oak. It's very water resistant. Red oak is less weather resistant though. So be careful.

I recently did a similar job using cypress (which is what I had available). I plowed a groove down the length of each of the bottom slats and set a half slat onto it to form a tee, making sure that each piece bowed upwards along its length. The somewhat bendy slats are now stiff and strong, even with my huge posterior sitting on them.

Too funny! I live near Green Bay and I can honestly say, I never see anyone wearing a Bears hat!! You must be pretty popular in Illinois wearing that hat. Great job on the restoration. I did the exact same thing to a bench left by the previous home owners. I painted mine though.

So the iron sides which by the way each weigh atleast 60 lbs..did they just stand straight all by themselves as you put the first cross pieces on??

i eather leaned it up agents a post to get the first one or braced it on my leg. each of the sides are about 20lb. so they are not that bad.

I think that was just odd lighting color. It's a self etching primer prior to the recoat. If you really want to I have a second channel where I do all of the how-to. Anytime there's a video on this channel there's a corresponding video on the other channel where I talk through all the steps and provide all the information. This channel is more for the easy watching who do not really want to do it they just like watching it.

@@WoodByWright Thank you, got it. Does experience tell you if the Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy is ok to put on stained wood? Their description on Amazon says, 'Seal bare or new wood to protect against damage'.

If it is just stained then it will work fine as the stain does not seal it.

So I just did the Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy on the top and sides of my boards. Product instructions say 2 days to cure at 80 degrees. From your experience do I need to wait the full 2 days before flipping and hitting the other side? Also what grit do you sand this product with before applying the Marine Varnish? Thanks

Great work, guys. Doing a similar project with Sapele (Mahogony) lats and just wondering about the finishes...you put on a penetrating epoxy coat first, then followed up with a varnish?

Yup. The penetrating epoxy hardens the wood and gives a good surface for the varnish to bind to. It also makes it easier in the future when you redo the finish

I don’t want to stain it, I want to paint it. Would spray pin work or should I paint it on.

Spray paint would be fine. Just make sure you do four or five very light coats. The downside to it is if you put it on thick or even a full coat it tends to chip off

White oak. It is far more rott resistant than maple for a lot of the other hardwoods.

Can you tell me what gauge of metal you used for the strap. I have been supplied with a strap that I am simply not capable of bending into shape. Yours looks much thinner.

This one is around a 16th inch. It's not very thick at all.

For mine they came with the old bench. But they are just strips of steel. You can pick them up at any big box store and drill the holes bend them to shape and a vice.

I’m rehabbing what appears to be the exact identical garden bench. What is the brown/orange product you spray on the cast-iron before you spray the black? I assume some sort of rust retardant? I’ve got black rustoleum, but perhaps I need a primer of another rust inhibiting product.

It is a self etching primer. It bonds with the metal far better then strait paint.

I'm finding that the more I do, and especially so the more I do things for her/both of us - I recently made Teresa a breakfast tray, and I'm currently building us an old-fashioned brick, wood and glass greenhouse - the more she takes an interest. She's started lending a hand with things, like some recent fence repairs, and now the greenhouse. She's even gone and helped me buy the wood to re-roof my shed workshop, a job that had been on hold, due to my lack of funds/materials. ❤️

Any chance you might know where to get that middle support that runs up the back? Or did you just buy something from a local home improvement store? I recently finished a restoration , but I’m afraid to even sit on it without that middle support. Thanks for any help!!

It is just a strip is 1/16" steel strapping so you could pick up a strip from most hardware stores and bend it to shape.

Hi we are doing the exact same bench. Can I ask what your wood dimensions are please? I know not all the pieces are the same size...or are they. Got a cutting list for me maybe? Also what wood did you use please?

We use White oak. I don't remember what the dimensions are on them we don't have them anymore they gave them to my grandparents. But there were only two different sizes. I want to say one was inch and a half by three quarter and the other one was two inch by three quarter.

Did you replace the metal bracings on the bottom or were those original. If you replaced them with new ones, where did you purchase them from. I just got a cast iron bench ends but it didn’t have any of the bracings and I desperately want to refinish it. Thanks. I really enjoyed your video.

Mine were original. But they were just straps of mild steel 3/4 in wide you could go buy them from the hardware store and drill holes for each panel.

I have the exact same bench. Looked up redoing a slat and iron bench. I have no boards to use as a reference. Could you tell me the dimensions you used for the boards please?

they are all 4' long and 3/4 thick. the larger ones I believe were 2" wide and the thinner ones were 1.5"

Where did you get those metal support “bands” with the screw holes? The ones with the screw holes. I need to buy some like the one you used in this restoration.

They were on the bench I took apart. But you can buy 1/16"x1/2 steel rods at the big box store and drill the holes where they intersect the boards

Hi Im from the uk and have one left behind in my council house by the old owner that rented the place nothing wrong with the wood just needs to be taken apart and wood sanded down and a nice new paint job but can’t get it apart as the nails and screws are rusted is there any tools that can break the nails and screws don’t want new wood

I would use a pe itrating oil. Here in the states I use PB blaster. Not sure if you can get it over there.

In this condition around 20 to $30 for the set. Depending upon the auction.
