Off the top of my head, a garden city is an idealized city design, dating from the 18th century. Apart from a rationalized design with straight roads (originally), a lot of room was alloted to greenery and spaces like small squares or other open spaces. The concept has been reinvented several times, sometimes more succesfully than other attempts.

Looking great Akruas, I'm glad to see Altengrad growing more and more. Perhaps an early grass strip airfield would be an interesting idea for the city? There are a few good assets on the workshop that would be suitable for such a time period including Fokker F.VII and Junkers Ju 52 aircraft. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Altengrad, keep up the good work!

Okay, so, wow! Akraus, I'm just in love with Altengrad, I'm really clueless on how one man can build such beautiful city! The creaticity that goes to build something like this is awesome! Hope a save download will be availble when you finish. Thank you for doing this!

This Chateau could be used as an event house or as a town house in the current times. The town hall of the city i work for was also a private mansion back in the days.

I love your series and especially that you put so much thought into which kind of projects stem from which historic period. I absolutely adore the garden city because it is such a neat symbol of its time. I would love it if you could also do more social housing. Slums were a huge problem in the 19th century in central europe, so architects put a lot of thought into how to fix that (with garden cities being one idea). I am thinking big, uniform, modern buildings like e.g. the "familistere de guise" (I know it's in France but still) or seeing that this is the 30s, some brutalist complexes! Keep it up and thank you :3

Yes, I downloaded some packs of 30's housing, just waiting to build forward to use them in a suitable area.

Nice to see the Dublin house's in use. They are modelled on houses in the suburbs of Crumlin and Drimnagh. Dublin has several Garden City suburbs which included large geometric shapes of crescents, circles and ovals. Marino is the oldest and most impressive, Cabra East and Cabra West are also notable but came later on. Garden City is sort-of proto-suburb in the UK & Ireland context as it was about seperating out uses and emulating UK Villages in a sort of "cottage-core" take on city housing. This was taken to the extreme in the US where they turned into modern suburbia and quickly started orienting to the car and not pedestrians. It's like lesson No. 2 Irish town planning :-D

We have garden cities in Norway too, we call it Hagebyer, most big cities have them. We also have something called Kolonihage, it's a district in the city that is small plots of land where you can build a small one room building, and a garden around it to plant whatever you want, people use it just for like a home-from-home garden living room or porch for the spring summer and autumn.
@Akruas3 жыл бұрын
I think those are called allotments? Super common in Germany and CR, we owned one back in the day. Really difficult to build in cities though, too small and needs to be super detailed to look good.
@guillotineschnapp38623 жыл бұрын
there is a garden city in hamburg germany that looks almost identical to yours. it's called "Fritz-Schumacher-Settlement" after the guy that got it built in the 1930s. it's either detached or rowhouses with large gardens and the gardens are connected with footpaths on the backside.

You could think of splitting up the city in districs and building some kind of town halls for every district. Like a lot of bigger cities in europe. You could build some huge representative governement buildings like a ministry of foreign affairs or something. :) The map is really beautiful and the details are great! Glad youre doing these projects, always watch it.

Great episode as always. Maybe you could build a small spa town in Altengrad ? I mean these were very popular at the beginning of the 20th century and they make for nice cities with hotels and parks etc. Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic could serve as inspiration if you like the idea :)

You know, by building railway infrastructure buildings, especially railway stations, you can put several buildings in their vicinity that are very similar in terms of architecture. It was a very common procedure used by railway companies to accommodate railway workers and their families. Such workers' housing estates. ;) And as allways, great video :)

As always, I can't always build what I want, it's not like I can just search for "train station architecture style" in the Workshop, there are sadly not enough buildings, despite the fact that there are probably thousands.

It’s funny to me that you call this a “garden city”. In the Netherlands, where I live, almost all middle class house are in neighborhoods like this and I even think most people in our country live in suburbs with this style. If you watch Silvaretts The Netherlands Cities Skylines series from 2016, you’ll see most of what he builds is in this “garden city” manner.
@Daniel-vj9oq3 жыл бұрын
Same here. Housing estates and suburbia like this are everywhere in Ireland, well the houses here are literally from Ireland. Some of what is low density in Altengrad would be mid to high in many towns in Ireland.
@dontenty56433 жыл бұрын
Where i live everyone is in apartments and outside there is a lot of smog (except our city park) and we have the No.1 ugliest building in our country. Our city was literally built cause a king in the 1600s wanted a port, doesn't matter that the only western coastline my country had during that time was a swamp that's still causing problems to this day.
