Leaving the stem ends on your bean plants will limit the amount of beans the plant will grow in the future. If you’re gardening for quantity, you need to pull off the stem end of the bean. Love your energy!

Yes true point, the plant will spend too much energy realizing the pod is gone and then dry out the stem to drop it. Pick from the stem of the pod!! Soooo much energy my god I have half the garden and produce and I dread canning and putting my bounty away

It's ok not having an organized garden. I'd refer to it as a natural garden. 😊 This year we did the square foot gardening method WITH companion planting. (We've always planted in rows in the past.) By having so many different plants so close together our production has gone up because of the large amount of diverse insects. We've been gardening for 13+ years and have never seen the variety and numbers of insects as we have this year. It's been amazing. Congratulations on your dehydrator. What a wonderful gift!

Here's a tip to preserve basil: if you want dry basil, you need to harvest the flowers before they open and just spread them in a single layer to air dry for about 7 days. It will give you the best dry basil you ever tasted. As for the leaves, you can process them in your food processor with olive oil and store in small containers in the freezer (some people freeze it in ice cube trays and store it in ZipLock bags). I use both methods and use one or the other depending on the recipe I'm preparing

With onions, if you snip the blooms as they start to grow then more energy will be directed towards the bulb. Then when you are ready to harvest, bend the stalks over about 2 days before you want to harvest them, once again it will cause the onions to start storing sugars and begin the dormant stage. Your bulbs will be much bigger. (Love your garden and energy)

Why do we do it? We love our plants and gardens and all the surprises they give us. Life is good with our own home grown foods. I love watching you share your garden and harvesting and processing. I always take a pair of scissors or snips with me to the garden and I snip the green beans at the connection to the vine. If you remove that from the stem it promotes further growth. If you leave a piece of the green bean on the vine with the connection, it makes the plant think it still has a green bean there to put energy into. The tomatoes on that trellis are doing so well because you probably had oyster shells crunched up for the chickens, or egg shells, and that is phosphorous and calcium that the tomatoes really love to fruit.

Yes, totally agree with not leaving any part of the green bean on the plants. Your plants will produce more green beans by removing the entire green bean. Happy harvesting!

Have you tried labeling the trays in the dehydrator? Tape or plant marker maybe? I haven’t harvested my lemon basil yet but glad you brought up the potential drama.

Last year, I transplanted small overwintered onions as an experiment, which I planted in september from seeds. Lot of them went to flower, however, I broke off the flower and bent the tip left of the flower so the water will not get inside, and to my surprise, they still grew and in the end, when I harvested them, they were bigger than onions which did not go to seed. I just had to make sure to consume them first, but I cured them as the rest and they lasted for 2-3 months...I am doing the same thing this year, onions sowed last year are already transplanted...it's like lazy gardening 😂

Beans and peas add nitrogen to the soil .hence strong tomato growth.i do the same thing. I'm experimenting this year interplanting vining squash for cattle panel arches I installed a 1/2 inch irrigation tube above the arches. Keeps fire smoke off plants no bad things . Surprised cause I was told you have to water below. Above way better and air conditions my house when I open windows..double win
