Are they growing In soil or pots? Can any of these varieties overwinter out in the garden? Or do they all need to go into the cellar?

All are grown in the ground and brought inside as dormant plants. When we want to take cuttings, we put on heat and under lights and green material grows from the rhizomes under the ground. We snap those off and they root easily. The old plant is thrown out.

How do you prevent spider mites or that black pest covering the back of the leaves?

Neem oil with a little soap and well mixing, sprayed as a find spray will take care of aphids. For spider mites, you need to water more. The environment is too dry.

Is this a perenial plant ? Can stand cold in Alberta?

No, they won't survive the winter. We cut them down, dig them up and put in a pot and leave somewhere cool but not freezing. Then when you want to wake them up, bring them into a warmer environment and give them light. Shoots will grow from the roots.
