The butterfly is a Mourning Cloak Butterfly, one of the earliest in the Spring. In Canada, it is not unusual to see them sunning themselves on top of the snow.

When I was young..in my late 20's, we moved into our first house...right next to a Mr. and Mrs. that were master gardeners in their mid 60's. Their yard was beautiful!! We had no money, so pulling out the badly neglected plants and tossing them really wasn't an option. My folks were great gardeners themselves so I knew a little....in our new yard we had a hedge of "Snow Ball bushes" (viburnums) that were way out of control. In the spring as soon as their flowers had dropped I grabbed my pruners and took those babies almost to the ground- a true rejuvenation pruning! My neighbors watched the whole process but only looked skeptical and said nothing. As the summer progressed they grew into a beautiful shape. The following spring they looked fantastic! My neighbors by then had become our dear friends and they told us they had their doubts those bushes would ever come back. Its been over 30 years and I still have those bushes!

I began pruning my two very large, over grown Loropetalums yesterday, and instead of pruning all willy-nilly as I have done the past few years, I used things you have taught me in all ofthese pruning videos. I kept thinking things like, "open the canopy," "that branch is pointing in, cut it," "that branch is touching another one, cut it," "that is a weak branch, cut it," "this will allow the plant to put energy into new growth." I've never had pruning lessons before, and I'm so thankful for the things I am learning from you.

@@tishgordon Still do 2. The reason you want depth is because the plants don't like their roots messed with. Since you don't want to divide them, any extra seeds will just be waste. You want to plant your cup contents as is with as little disturbance as possible.

This video is so exciting! Spring is soooo close! When my family first moved into our current home, we kept pulling this "weed" growing under a crape myrtle. No matter how much we pulled it out, the leaves just kept coming. Finally in late winter that weed had flowers on it! And it wasn't a weed at all, it was a gorgeous hellebore! Just goes to show even with our inexperience knowing what flower verities are out there, those things are T.O.U.G.H.! Now we know how to properly care for it and have purchased more ;-) Thanks for the great video!

What a gorgeous butterfly 🦋. in my family there is a saying that based on the color of the first butterfly you see in the spring you get to know how your year will be. If is a dark colored one you will have a healthy year as you you well be full of color and life 🦋 And if it a withe/yellow one you will might be having a rough year and might get sick. So, your year will be amazing🤩

Laura, last spring I hurt my eye trimming my hydrangeas without protective eye wear...I have peripheral vision loss. My eye Dr said healways wears protective eye wear when gardening because of all the eye injuries he sees! I love your videos!

Confession time: I’m a long-time gardener & fearful pruner. I jumped in with both feet this weekend...in part from the info you share & the confidence it brings. Hopefully I did it well...if I made a mistake, I learned something!

I have 2 paniculata hydrangeas. I had 15 macrophylla until we started having bad droughts and late freezes. So I’m I big fan of paniculata. I walk at the Botanic Garden and I watch for their pruning to begin. Which is todsy!! I was just there. Did you know you can stick the cuttings in the soil, keep them well watered and by spring you can have a new shrub 🥰 they root very easily . I put several cuttings in the ground and usually one or two will root

Thank you for the hellebore info, after several years of nothing I'm finally seeing new growth. Wasn't sure if should cut off all those ugly old leaves, will get my clippers out. Working on the hydrangeas even though the buds aren't as far advanced as yours are. Have a great day.

Thank you for showing us the helibore pruning. I pruned on my first plant and killed it, so just recently bought more plants to replace it. Hopefully I won't kill them this time.
