I noticed aphids on my milkweed plant , the stems were completely yellow and I started to go get the bug spray to get rid of them and then I remembered Laura saying that sometimes it is good to have a sacrificial plant for aphids. I stopped and looked closer and saw a few ladybugs so I knew I would not be spraying it. Today I looked and the stems are completely clean of aphids! Good job ladybugs! 🐞

@@dlsdyer9071 I am working on eradicating quack grass from an area I will place my raised-bed vegetable garden. I was digging deep in the soil when I encountered this strange tan colored sack-like thing. It was a toad! He just sat there, you know how rabbits sit still in plain sight as if that makes them invisible. I had to gently scoot his butt so I could continue digging in the area while keeping an eye on him. Several minutes later, I think I may have unknowingly put pressure on his body. I heard a squeal. Toads squeal?!

Me as well. One was completely covered in yellow aphids and the one next to it was clean! I didn't want to sacrifice it though as it was the nicest one. They were already struggling as I think they get just a bit too much shade. So I used my gloved hand to scrape them off then hosed it down a bit.

Mint story. When we first bought out house, we knew nothing about plants. The previous owners planted mint in the ground against the house. It only took 1 growing season for the mint to wrap itself halfway around our 1,100 Sq ft house. The smell was so strong, I could smell it through the walls. I ripped it out 7 years ago, and it wasn't until last year that I stopped finding it randomly. Don't put mint in the ground. 😆

@KittyClark08222 жыл бұрын
If you grow any kind of mint, you need to border it. Keep it cut and don't let it seed. Mint is a fantastic addition to a herb garden. I use the Mint leaves in my handmade soaps and I infuse the mint in olive oil for a multitude of uses, mostly in my soaps. Mint is great when you use it for tea when you have a cold or sore throat. Don't give up on the great mint plants. Just keep it bordered. It's a shame not to grow it. I also sell the seeds from my mint plant in the spring. Great addition to the herb garden. Lemon balm is also a plant that grows wild and spreads like fire, but I could not do without it. I keep it contained and use it all summer and dry it in the winter. I know your mint grew way out of control but keep one mint plant and look up all the things you use mint for. It's not just a pesky plant. It's a great Herb.

@lurk19533 жыл бұрын
There are cultivated liatris and wild types. The wild ones are invasive in Ontario. They are probably the ones with the long tap roots. You don’t want those - they spread everywhere and choke out natural habitats in wetlands. The govt is trying to eliminate them with different techniques (insects etc) but I don’t know that they’re having much success. The cultivated ones on the other hand are very well mannered. In fact I wish they spread volunteers a little bit more!

Not a perennial but could you talk about the difference between all the proven winners petunias? Supertunia, Supertunia vista, mini vista, doubles, blanket, crazytunia, Good and Plenty, Surfinia, trailing…This was my first year with containers and I have to be honest I was in over my head with all the varieties and what each one did. There are a ton of videos explaining them but I would love one that has that “Laura” quality explanation.

I love your videos because you are giving plenty of ideas about perennial plants. Thank you so much.

Hi Laura, I love your list but was wondering about how to care for the phlox and will they bloom more than one a year.

So FRUSTRATING!! I want them ALL and just don’t have room. . . Thanks, Laura for imparting your amazing knowledge. 🌿

Discovered gallardia this year...fun to see it pop up in her video here. Gallardia blooms late spring to frost...and I always love that!

I love and really appreciate these videos!! Can you do a video on plants that tolerate/ do well in poorer soils? I have too much poor soils and fertilizer/organic matter/compost can get expensive!

Not knowing where you live, but check with your city garbage disposal (dump). Where I live, they have one site that they will dump compost into a trailer for you ($15 per cubic yard), or at another site you can shift it yourself and take as much or as little as you want for free. DH and I filled a small truck bed and topped off a flower bed. Going to do it again this fall when everything is getting ready for winter so that I'll be ready for the spring without waiting for DH to have enough time.

Hi there I 'take my hat off to you'. 👏 staying on top of your garden seems an impossible task. I am in South Africa and most plants you plant, I can't find here BUT I am still learning SO much. My garden is 20 yes old. Big, but a speck compared to yours. Your zoning prep. and so much more, has helped me get over my utter feeling of being overwhelmed. I appreciate your channel so much. Blessings Jenny

Liquid fence has been a lifesaver for me and my garden. I spray it faithfully every 30-45 days and I have created a deer free garden! Northern California 9a

Thank you ! I’m surprised you don’t grow Lantana?? Such a heat lover, pollinator magnet and the color is vibrant. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a video. I put the shorter type in my pots and they are insanely pretty as a filler/spiller. Do they not do well in your area?
@angiezavacky43473 жыл бұрын
Lantana is not a perennial in her zone , but she has used several as annuals in pots and the landscape at the college.

They are not perennial in zone 6. She used a few in a container not too long ago. Which I was surprised how many because when I grow them as an annual in zone 6b of VA they get HUGE. I can’t wait to see how they grow in that small container she put them in packed full of other plants.

I know you can’t cover ALL the varieties of plants. But the “Siloam Peony Display” Daylily is a rockstar in my garden.
