Laura, you can use a small wet/dry vacuum to get the extra water out of the trays. And yes, it would be nice to have a plug on those for drainage. But until then, manual extraction.

I have a hard time not overwatering succulents, but I think maybe that syringe would be the answer. Thank you so much for referencing the equipment you use so viewers can find them. You might be able to use something like Sticky Tack, the stuff teachers use to hang stuff on walls, to plug the drain holes. It molds like clay and it's easy to pinch off just the amount you need.

I set my watering can under a downspout (to catch rain water for plants...orginally), but it doesn't matter how many clean bowls of water I have outside for when my kitties are out they inevitably drink the rainwater out of watering can😂, (that and puddles, saucers, my glass😮, etc.) So Russel snagging a sip out of watering can was such a "YEP" moment😊, lol!

We have the same terrible hard water issues here in Utah. We had the typical salt softener in our home. I got sick and tired of having to use the fridge water (not salt soft water), and still getting hard water spots on my houseplants. I discovered a few years ago a water softener (conditioner) that does not use salt, it uses citrus instead. It’s totally safe for houseplants, has the same benefits as a salt softener, but where salt softeners kill houseplants this one is completely safe for houseplants. It’s the NuvoH2O system. It’s small and could possibly fit under the counter in your Hartley. That would help a ton with water spots on your houseplants because you can get water on the leaves and it doesn’t leave spots.

There is so much in the greenhouse that i think should be in the Hartley ! The olives and citrus.😂 Put a peice of aquarium tubing on that syringe it'll make that a little easier

Enjoyed this video! I’ve ordered from this company and agree they send wonderful plants. Tell me more about the grow lights you are using that prevent plants from stretching or refer me to a past video if I’ve missed it. Seems I’m constantly adjusting the gardener’s supply lights. This is tricky because of their loose chain setup on the light hood. Nothing like the hood crashing on your plants to get the heart pumping! Plus all the plants must have the same light distance requirement on the shelf. Thank you!

Some of the succulents are nice. I am not a huge fan of the overly smooth ones - something about them makes my skin scrawl. For your reusable water idea, you can get one of those Rainpoint indoor watering systems, set the pump tube in the trays, and lead it out to where you want it. That's what I do for my fire escape hardneck garlic grow bag. On rainy days I have the Rainpoint pump line in the catch-all tray and have it pump out water every hour into a gallon so that the grow bag is not sitting in water and garden water is not falling on pedestrians.

Love all the beautiful succulents! I have many of the same varieties. Mountain Crest does a really great job. I have found that using 16 ounce condiment bottles (with adjustable opening tips) purchased just for watering succulents are so helpful at keeping the water off the leaves as well. I can’t keep succulents alive! I fail every time I try. I just bought one more because I have faith that I will get it right this time. It’s a small one in a little planter and it’s bone dry so I gave it a tiny bit of water. I think my problem is overwatering so I’m going to be very light handed with it. I spent crazy money on a bunch of succulents last summer and they did great for awhile and then they all started losing stems and died.

Those MCG succulents are absolutely gorgeous! Since you have so much trouble with the hard water, have you ever thought of installing a water softener system for your property? It would be great for your house and greenhouses! Not sure of the cost, though.
@Erin-tk5jw8 ай бұрын
I think they have a softener for their house. I just moved to a house with a well and softener, and from what I’ve read, plants don’t like softened water because of the sodium content. I don’t know how important it is, but I’ve been bringing in water from an outdoor, non-softened water spigot to water my houseplants.

Pretty succulents! Having that hard water must be a huge pain for anyone, let alone a gardener! How can you keep your watering system clean and not clogged up all the time? I'm sure you use some kind of filtering in your house for appliances as well.
@jenford70788 ай бұрын
Love the succulents, especially the rosette looking ones! Question: Could you install a water softener system just for your studio and greenhouse or isn't that feasible? Hard water is the worst, an acquaintance ruined the look of their steel siding because they had a sprinkler system that was aimed at their shrubs along the outside walls, by summers end it was a giant rust stain.

Could you cut off the tip of that syringe to fit the hole, add a little silicone caulk or plumbers putty to seal around it and then add flexible clear tube to the tip, which you can stop with a clamp or fold it back on itself the same way you do the solid drip tubing in the garden. The tubing could be held with a command hook on the side of the tray when not in use to keep it tidy and out of the way.
