Super cute terrarium. We cleaned out old large Yankee candle jars. Added the soil and rock and then foraged the yard for moss and decor. I have had mine covered with the candle top for two years now and it’s beautiful. It was a great way to recycle. We did this for a party and all the guests brought one home. They loved making them. Enjoy the day.

I make terrariums with my second grade students each year. We use two two-liter bottles that I cut so we can plant in one and the other nests into that one to create a cover. This year we planted a philodendron, peperomia, and a tradescantia plant in them. We always plant them before winter break and then the students take them home for Mother's Day in May. This year we have about 70 terrariums sitting in my classroom windowsills.

You can always make a cone out of an A4 sheet of paper and direct soil or little ricks to the area you want them to go in instead of trying to fit your hand in a tight vase :). Great terrarium!

Laura, the next time you and your mom go thrifting/antiquing, be on the lookout for a large Lazy Susan so you can get a 360 degree view of what you're working on (and can turn it to the camera easily). I have one on my potting bench and another on my crafts table, and they make viewing what I work on easier. Now you've got me in the mood to make a terrarium!

You could put a lid if you wanted to. Just turn one of your gray pot saucers upside down over the opening. That’s beautiful and very timely, I have a 2 gallon pickle jar with a lid I’ve been wanting to turn into a terrarium but could not remember layering. Your tip on the gravel was helpful because I was under the impression it was a necessary element, but the faux layer is beautiful. Thank Miss Laura!

I never put fairies in my fairy gardens because I once read, " You can't see fairies with your eyes because they live in your heart." Instead I put their belongings, a table and chair, a wheelbarrow, or a tiny bed. Anything that shows they live there.

I love how the fairy’s hat looks just like the moss flower she’s sitting next to. Cute! For folks trying this project perhaps they could mock up their arrangement on the table first and then strategically place the outermost/less reachable plants/stones first and work your way to the exit of the vessel they are using rather than trying to go back in and around without dislodging things. Chopsticks or long tweezers would also help with the long skinny vessels you spoke of.
