One day I will get gardens this full! ❤️ I can’t afford to do it all at once, or to start with such large plants, but in time they’ll get there. Do you have any “family heirloom “ plants? I have irises, peonies, forsythia, mock orange, etc that are older than I am, and that were started from splits off some of my grandmother’s and great grandmother’s flowers. Those are my favorite plants because they are ties to family. I tell my children about those people as we walk through the garden. It keeps their memory alive. ❤️ I LOVE your channel! You keep me going through garden failures and burn out, and get me out in the dirt to keep working on my garden dreams. Thank you so much for your hard work and inspiration. 🌸🌺

I LOVE heirloom plants, and try very hard to make them the emphasis in my gardens. I read the other day that iris are considered heirlooms after 30 years by a couple of the major iris growers.

@Julie royce, oh my stars, I have never heard of the "family heirloom" gardening. I would love to have had cuttings/starts from my mother, grandmother and great-grandmothers' flowers, trees and shrubs. They all had such beautiful varieties in each of their yards. You have such treasured possessions in having the heirlooms in your family. I Love Love Love that you tell your children about their lineage!💖💞 Hopefully, your children can carry on the tradition! HUGS

@@dianequist835, I live in the home I was born and raised in, and the same irises have been here my entire life. I am 44. Of course we split them, but we have never planted new varieties in their place. The rhizomes came from my grandmother, who was born in the late 1800s, and I believe she got a couple of hers from her mother, who lived up the road. It was very common here to share flowers, as for many years the only other way to get them was by catalog, and people didn’t have a ton of disposable income. (We are rural.) They planted many things from seed each year, to help around the farm, like marigolds for pollinating around the vegetable gardens, and certain flowers to keep away deer, etc, but ornamental flowers came from friends and family who shared starts from their own. I share these with family and friends when I split them, to keep the tradition alive.

@@kimberleyfrasquillo3684, I think they will! My sister passed away in 2019, and my daughter, who is now 16, suggested that we plant a memorial iris garden in her memory, because my sister so loved the irises. I think we’ll do just that when we split them again later this year. ❤️

@@julieroyce8945 I absolutely loved reading your post! I could hear your love and sentiment in your words. Flowers play such an important role in history, and sadly is overlooked sometimes in women's history. The beautiful stories of women coming together in their various social constructs to share flowers, produce, recipes, words of wisdom, sad losses and births .... Iris are my favorite flower. They just sing to my soul. I'd also love to get my hands on some heirloom rhubarb. Another thing often shared among women.

I recently bought 10 of the pink profusion at my local lowes…they had them discounted to $2/plant because they hadn’t watered them and they were struggling. But I trimmed them, planted them, and they’re already putting on new growth and taking off! Check those discount racks GA fam, they’ve been loaded this year!! I’ve gotten SO many great deals this year, my garden is filling up super quick! Thanks Laura for another great video, and I hope all the GA fam has a beautiful and blessed day!

I was at my local Lowes over the weekend and I too got some discounted plants because they just didn't water them. Gave them a good trim and water and they're coming around. Kind of hard to see so many plants under stress due to lack of water but catch it at the right time and there are bargains to be had.

Everything is coming together! I love the astilbe under the lilac. Such a great pop of color. We also have a large garden under three massive oak trees. We started the garden in 2020 and used wood chips as mulch as well. At first I was not impressed with it, but wood chips have helped our soil so much in that area by aerating the heavy clay soil so well! We covered the chips with dark mulch and fast forward two years that area is full of earth worms, good bacteria and the garden is thriving!

Astilbe and echinacea are my absolute favorite plants! Astilbe is nostalgic for me. My kids gave me one many years ago when we lived in our previous house, and I didn’t bring it with me to our new place. This year my oldest son gave me one for Mother’s Day and I’ve planted where I can see it from my rocking chair on our front porch! There’s just something about watching astilbe blooms dance in the breeze that makes them look almost magical! I’ve tried winter sowing echinacea, but they are so slow growing, is that normal? I doubt they’ll be big enough to plant out this year so I need to find a way to winter them over without a greenhouse! Now there’s a challenge! You’re correct about them being later bloomers! I have two in my garden that I picked up on clearance last year and they have buds but look like they won’t bloom for a while, thank you for letting me know that’s normal.

OMG! I love that astilbe with that lamium! Beautiful compliment! I hope that you don't extend the boxwood, and get rid of the lamium, Laura! It amazes me how you can plant so close to the trunk and under trees and not encounter any roots. I am constantly hitting roots and rocks (greetings from a Canadian suburb). Based on your experience, I stopped using wood chips and any type of mulch and am only using compost now. I love how it breaks down and feeds nutrients back into the soil. Thank you Laura!
