About the birch. I wonder if it was because we had a couple of “false springs” where the weather warmed up, then we got slammed with cold temperatures. That happened more than once this year. Tree started to bud out and got nipped, affecting the top more because budding at the top started slightly before the bottom? We may never know. Reminds me of that Japanese maple you had in the pot next to the house. 🤞 hopefully it’s nothing more than that. 💚💚💚

I thought the same thing. It's common to see this type of thing in my Ohio zone 6 where we get a lot of spring moisture and then temperature fluctuations. I'm no expert but maybe the unusual amounts of moisture Laura got this spring is making the tree react to spring temp fluctuations differently.

I was thinking the same and especially those brunches were higher than the rest and the freeze affected those buds for sure. It might not get new buds this year and exposed without leaves during the summer might finish the tips off....Will see, I guess!

Laura I have heard very solid advice about trees from Howard Garrett. He has a great website and local (Dallas) radio program. He talks constantly about the flare of the tree must be exposed to air. No soil or mulch covering it. He also mentioned that most canned and burlap trees are buried too deep and we should not plant at that depth. He also goes by dirt Dr.

Hi Laura. I love your show, been watching for awhile. Thank you for sharing so much helpful gardening content. And dahlias are my favorite flower, so I love watching you plant and harvest them. SO beautiful. About the birch problem, I worked at a gardening center for several years, but not a "professional" tree expert by any means, so I went and did some research online. Most of the research said that if the bronze birch borer has infested the tree, the top canopy will start dying back, and often it will show up after the first two years after being planted, like possibly in your case? One university research site said that these borers attack stressed trees, like from exposed roots, hard soil that's compacted, where construction has taken place, or from drought. And it did look like you may have birch borers from the video you showed. I saw a couple of black "d"s on the trunk. The "d"s are their exit holes and only about 1/5 of an inch in size. There won't always be frass, often just a clean dark "d". I saw one photo online of a borer exiting the tree, clean as a whistle? YUK! ha Anyways, I know you know gardening WAY better than me, but thought I'd share. God bless you both.

Regarding the birch, I had a similar occurrence with a Japanese Maple. Arborist came and diagnosed a fungus in the soil. It has been getting deep root treatments for about 2 years since the diagnosis.. The top branches did not recover but at least no more die off has occurred. Not sure if that might be your issue with the birch but it sure looks similar. Love your channel and learn tons. Thank you!

Birch Trees, more than any other tree I have noticed, are sensitive to messing with the forest and/or plants around them. They work with the established fungal/root network to supplement their needs. Potentially, water that area more broadly and add some mulch for a year to help the fungi network grow and help him establish new networks. He and your new maple are going to be buds 😅!!#SecretLifeOfTrees

I see that in trees all the time around here (Reno). Looks like you had a frost/freeze that took out the tender buds. If they don’t bounce back next year, cut them back. It’ll look bizarre for a year, but it could come back. It’s very likely a result of all the false springs we get. Nice job on the dahlias, such beautiful flowers! Can’t wait to see the shed! Things are really coming along 😊.

I planted dahlias from seed last year. I left the ones in the ground covered with excess soil and some shipping material. I'm in zone 7B. I stored the tubers, that grew in planters and wrapped them in damp vermiculite and newspaper... THE ONES LEFT IN THE GROUND ARE HUGE AND STUNNING ALREADY! the others are ok but not worth the work. We had the coldest winter in years! I know what I'm doing this year!!! Already saving packing material! Successful experiment and much less costly than buying tubers. Maybe Laura should try a small section, hell they almost survived her pots. As I recall, some did!

Good morning Love your channel!! In my experience bring the soil down to the basal flare and water throughout the summer. If the tree is lacking water or nutrients the upper canopy is the first to go much like how frostbite works ( how my husband describes it to our clients, we own a tree are company). If the soil is too compact or high the roots will begin to grow upward to find water and can girdle the trunk in the process. Just some info I’ve picked up along my career. Good luck, and thank you so much for your continued educational videos!

I live in southern Ontario and several years ago something similar happened to the birches in my neighbourhood. My birch clump was fairly young, and all mine died. They looked fine in the fall and then failed to leaf out in the spring and never did. People with more mature trees had the tops die off just like yours, except even more severe. Everyone with a young tree lost theirs and everyone with a more mature tree, like 15 ft and up, ended up with an 8 ft tree.

We had something similar happen to our river birch when it was about the same size as yours. In our case it was because the previous owners had planted grass right up to the base of it. Once we pulled the grass back about two feet from the base it then finished leafing out. 🤷 the tree is about 25 feet tall now so fingers-crossed it’s a similar situation with yours!

Last year we had the 17 year cicadas. That’s what a lot of the damaged trees looked like. Our new dogwood had places that looked like a mini tiller went past. The first guy from UT thought the tree was gonna have to come down and be burned and we had a whole new species of something. Finally the specialist came out and Recognized immediately that it was cicada damage. All the places have healed themselves and the tree looks wonderful. Just a thought :-)

can't wait to see all those dahlias, and color-blocking is going to be spectacular (and oh so easy when you make your arrangements, lol)... have no idea about the tree - it is beautiful so i'd go with the freeze - maybe just got nipped or something... maybe one of your tree guys is familiar with something like that - might be worth a question to them... looks like you're doing everything you can; it is a beautiful tree!! looks like such a pretty day there; and painting the flower cottage! oh boy!!! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤

That has happened to several tees in our area… sacadas really damage the trees when they lay their eggs

A ton of dahlias, it's going to be gorgeous! I can't believe how good it looks with the woodchips between each row. If you do that every year, it will improve your soil tremendously! Hugs🤗❤🤗

I'm glad to hear that you're leaving the dahlias in the ground... I leave them (Washington State zone 8b), mulch them up and they come back. You're going to save yourself soooooo much time !

Excited to see your dahlias! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 On a side note: coming from someone who drives big John Deere tractors here on our farm I was yelling to the screen “No! Don’t do that!” 😅😅😅 Good call Aaron to bring Laura back down 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 you guys are the best!

@Gardening On Taylor Mountain, yes, it was a bit nerve wracking seeing Laura being raised up. Especially, since she wasn't harnessed or tethered in...😱😱

Its nice seeing Laura in a T-Shirt! Crazy how different parts of our country have such different weather! I'm in the lower FL Keys and I wish it was a cool/late spring for us, its been over 80 since March! Today its over 90. But it feels like triple digits. But I want to know if anyone grows dahlias here in south Florida? I'm thinking of trying some in a container.💚

Regarding the tree that has leafless branches, did you ask the tree people when they came for advise? If not maybe a photo could be sent to them. Just a thought.

I think everyone needs a Paul in their life. Our weather is finally starting to get warmer and I spend yesterday cleaning out flower beds and man-o-man my back and legs are sore today. I wish I had a Paul to help with yardwork.

got my order from swan island dahlias. they give great instructions. they require a low nitrogen fertilizer, but like high potassium and phosphorus. so like a 5-10-10. wondering if your stuff has that. I know your dahlia's look great, so whatever your land and sea has, it must be working. They also recommend using bone meal and slug and snail baiting at planting. lots of water during the summer, not by hand, but sprinkler. and then spraying for spiker mites and mildew, and pinching! sounds like a lot of work, but worth it! looking forward to my "Year of the Dahlia" as I'm calling it. Can't wait to see yours and all the transformations coming.
