My husband built our coop then built a run for our chickens ..its 30'L x 15' Wide x 6' High nothing can get in to them from below or above. He built it attached to the coop so they come out of the coop right into the run . We had 1 run same size on each side of the coop . We down sized chickens so we took one side down but we love it and don't have to worry about our chickens...we have had chickens for 15+ years and not 1 chicken loss to predators and they only lay in the coop 😊

I'm so lucky that we have friends who plant way too much and I can buy fresh veg and reward them for their work. I plant herbs, because I like them fresh, tomatoes, of course, and eggplant because we love them and if you buy them from the store they are too often soft already. Plus the eggplant shrub is so gorgeous, it could be al landscape plant.

What a wonderful video!! I love the look at the freeze dryer! Can you keep going with this series, and how items taste and how they taste reconstituted? I'd love to see how red peppers reconstitute, green beans, celery. Some of these things dont taste right dehydrated, so I'd love to find better alternative to preserving.

Make sure you open the door after defrost so it doesn’t mold inside. I actually just leave the door open and hit no defrost and it defrosts on its own without using heat. Also I find a lot of times food needs extra dry time, especially strawberries. If you notice they become spongy in the jar, they probably needed a bit more time. I learned about the dry test which is when you weigh the trays after the cycle is complete and then add more dry time and weigh again after 2 hrs to be sure it hasn’t lost more water. If it has lost weight add more dry time until they don’t lose weight. 😊

We absolutely love our freeze-dryer! Preserving eggs and milk for when hens stop laying and cows are dry has been a game changer. We freeze dried cucumbers and cherry tomatoes and find they could almost sub as potato chip alternatives. Grated cabbage/ zucchini/carrots all are amazing in soups. Definitely don’t love peas freeze dried. The consistency isn’t terribly enjoyable. Hope you love yours❤

I just found your channel this morning. I have been trying to live exactly like this. My goal this year is to learn to can from my garden. I am studying up on owning a dairy cow. Im worried that its hard. Learning how to keep them milking. I guess its good to have another homesteader or cow owner to breed with.

I tried doing seeds indoors a couple of times and really didn't see the necessity. It seemed like more trouble than it's worth. Well, to be clear, only because I do not have a green house or any room or a good set up for all that. But it also didn't seem like veggies take that much time to grow from seed and you can get organic herb and veggie starts at the store to stagger the growth.

I used to buy I think it was, Special K cereal from supermarket. They came out with a strawberry version. Those were freeze dried. And reconstituted in the milk in no time. But usually they did not last that long, those were the first things I picked out to eat. I would love a freeze dryer. Corn would be a could thing to try. I have had that and it was delicious.

We only use H seeds, never highbred we put up 1gal tomato powder, 180qt tomato sauce with 150 plants You need to decide if determinant or indeterminate are best for you... And depending on what you are making with your fruit, are they just for topping a sandwich or salad ? Or canning salsa, sauce, paste, powder? I stick close to amish paste, roma, san marzano with a brandywine for fresh eats

Congrats on getting the freeze dryer! I’ve been wanting one. I do have a suggestion. When you are loading your freeze dryer, I would put the raw protein items on the bottom. Just like you should store raw meets in the lower level of the refrigerator. You wouldn’t want raw meat/ protein products to get splashed on the fruits. Just my thoughts. Love your videos!

Recommendation for egg shells If you have a dehydrator you can dehydrate your eggs shells and crush them up or blend in your blender and use as calcium in your garden. We found this to be a great way to give our garden calcium as plants can deplete the levels.

I will go further use like items together like just strawberries or just fruits with the same consistency, because all ingredients doesn’t have the same dry time, some products can be dry and some not fully. And strawberries can be tricky also because the little seeds on them take more time to fully dry if you want them for longer storage.

Nope - you have to defrost between runs. I’ve tried to use it for one more run and it failed miserably. I wound up having to put my trays in the freezer, defrost the unit then start over. Also, you didn’t say if you did warm trays but that will help a lot. I select warm trays and that helps me while emptying my trays so that I can leave my other trays in the freeze dryer so I don’t have to worry about moisture seeping back in them. Don’t mean to be a bossy know it all, just have had my freeze dryer for 2 years now and trying to give you some helpful info. The only thing I’ve found that takes a super long (seems like anyway) time to reconstitute is potatoes.
