I just followed your advice: with fresh meconopsis betonicifolia seed, from my own garden, I have seedlings within 10 days. Thanks a lot.

This was a really great video, really informative! I find Meconopsis to be a confusing genus, working out what's a hybrid and what's a variety within a species.

I have finally been able to get some Blue Poppy seed, only M. horridula, and your advice is invaluable. I've not heard of the trick with grit so I will give it a go & let you know how it goes. I'm living in Tasmania at the moment. I tried to grow M. grandis in Brisbane many years ago & the thing promptly died just after I got it. Too warm & humid which has been a problem for many cool growing plants I've found. Hopefully the Tassie climate will keep them happy.

Excellent Rachel. I germinated mine in a cold frame…. Moss was a problem on the surface of the modules, I used a tooth pick to remove it from around the seedlings… you are advised not to transplant the seedlings but I managed to do it where 2 good seedlings were close together…

Congratulations, Brian, and well done. Watering with epsom salts is safe for meconopsis and will get rid of lychen. It may help with moss too. I can tell how much you cherished those meconopsis by the use of the toothpick 🙂

I was successful last season at growing one lingholm from seed (from many) to almost blooming in the garden. I took photos the whole journey, until the morning when the bud was certainly to bloom a rabbit ate the bloom stalk! Oh the devastation! lol but alas I will try prob again and protect it better.

I have always planted seedlings in the garden at the same depth as they were in the pot. Watch out for slugs when they go out. Meconopsis are very tasty apparently.

Very interesting video. I have 6 plants all bought at Harlow Carr in Harrogate. The first 3 plants have been moved twice before 3rd time lucky in the ideal place and the next 3 I bought joined them. I have often wondered about how to collect the seeds as the seed pod seems to be different to normal poppies. I have been reluctant to grow from seed as did not want the disappointment if they do not work. I dont have a green house but do have a cold frame, would it be possible to keep them in there? Thank you
@GardeningatDouentza

Maybe you will give seed growing a go now. Yes, a cold frame works as well as a greenhouse. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your video! I am in a place that gets some periods in summer that are hot and dry, and I am wondering if you think I could grow them as an indoor plant? If I maintain the light requirements and the moisture? I feel like that would be easier than worrying every time it goes about 30 degrees Celsius!!

I fear you would struggle to grow the blue Himalayan poppy indoors. It is a plant that needs winter cold.

One blue poppy flowered and as it’s June, can I collect the seeds, or just put some grit down in the location of the current blue poppy, hoping it will survive (as it’s a shady area). Advice appreciated.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Жыл бұрын
Well, if you're going to sow in the ground that would be the right place. Sowing in pots, however, always yields better results.

Hi there and thanks. Yes, I'm sorry to say I think it's a bit too late to sow meconopsis. The seed won't get the cold it needs, unless of course we have an unexpected cold snap.

You mentioned that you are gardening in the equivalent to zone 9 in the US. I don't think that is correct, because zone 9 includes the Southern tips of Flordia, Texas and California. The weather in these places is very hot and rarely ever freezes. Think of oranges and palm trees.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Жыл бұрын
According to the hardiness map we're zone 9.

What you may not understand is that these are a mountain plant. So think of a high mountain in Florida where the temperature is cooler due to elevation, but moist.
@sazji
@sazji Жыл бұрын
Zones are about low temperatures; they don't tell much about the rest of the climate. For example, Atlanta is zone 8, but so is Seattle; Atlanta has hot humid summers and hot nights, while Seattle is cooler, especially our night temperatures. Thus the things we can actually grow here are quite different. We can grow Meconopsis but it would be pretty much impossible in Atlanta.
