Hi Eve. Great material. I am in the process of updating my rear yard and have a quick question. When interviewing landscape designers, what significant questions and or information should a homeowner obtain aside from licensing, references, and how long in the field? Thanks in advance.

This video was really helpful for me, I recently started my own business doing native landscape design and I have had a hard time figuring out how to price my services, especially when I don't know how long it will take me to finish a design

Eve thanks for the video. Landscape design is widely misunderstood and under appreciated. Horticulture is hard and requires knowledge and experience. By and large the advice you get from people who work at garden centers or big box stores is useless and uninformed. If you do it right the first time not only will you get a much more attractive garden but it will save you money in the long run. Almost all DIY projects make major mistakes. Pouring concrete, fence construction, irrigation design, correct pruning and planting techniques, not to mention the hardest part of all correct plant selection and location are examples of areas crucial to saving money. Pros will save you money; take it from a 43 year design build contractor who came in behind hundreds of failed projects. Not map, blue prints or drawings is the correct nomenclature. Never heard the word map used in the trade until this video.

Not trying to be funny lots of people just want your expertise, they don’t want you to do the job just your recommendations and what plants and so on. Not saying everyone is like this, I’ve learned overtime if they want it done they’re going to let you fly free, give you an idea of what they want done, but not everyone is like this and I guess take the good with the bad I always did piece work “paid by the job” bc with years of knowledge your going to get the job done faster no matter what and I find that a better way to price things and sometimes you still underprice the job. Usually on larger tree jobs you sometimes under estimate, always have a great climber, this is trial and error and keep them, loyalty in every aspect of life!!

What is the best way to find a landscape designer in my area? What qualifications should I be looking for and what questions should I asking to ensure I'm getting a designer that is going to be able to build something from my ideas, wishes, wants and needs, but also to interject their professional knowledge when needed? I definitely don't have a budget for the best of the best, but I also don't want to choose someone that I figure out midway through, and I loose money on, that they're not what I'm looking? Is it the typical choose three different people and get a quote? Since I'm assuming the good one's will charge to have an initial visit, it doesn't sound like getting several quotes is an option with types of designers.

The best way to make your choice is to look at some of their designs and get a feel of communication and if you feel comfortable with them

I love to refer contractors to my clients and be there during the initial meeting with a contractor. This way when the client hires someone that I have referred, then I know it's going to get done right. I only refer contractors that I have worked with etc. I also like to stick around during the installation phase to ensure that things are flowing smoothly. I can also use the installation for social media content.

I want to click on the card to see the other videos, but I also don’t want to stop watching this video! Instead of using cards, can you please put the links in the description? (Or do both?) Those cards are audience retention killers btw.

I'm binging all your videos because my yard is in terrible shape from the previous owner but I'm glad I grew up with my father knowing landscaping and having done mowing, even now I work a mowing job so for the most part I'll be doing everything on my own but it is nice to have all this extra advice just for what I don't know or consolidate what I do, I'm super excited to get started and I'm hoping my landlord will help me on some of the costs

I'm in the midst of following a plan I developed and compared to what I have seen done by "pros" I don't think I would ever hire a pro unless the site was very problematic and the "pro" could show me a great portfolio. Planning took me several months of spare time. The basic concept was developed about 20 years ago with DIY installation of a brick patio and planting two crab apple trees for shade. Dimensioned sketches were followed by CAD drawings. My problems have been budget, glacial till soil and neighbors who have weed patch lawns and unmaintained trees. My mistakes have been mostly related to plant size. We are in zone 6b with a microclimate due to being near the shore of Lake Ontario that moderates our temperatures and provides more moisture. There are many useful free resources including You Tube, Books and some garden center staff. If you have a few evenings a week free DIY is worth the effort.

Eve, not a map. It’s a plan or drawing. Your videos are very informative.
