He did tbf. Its the pragmatic defensive style of play thats let him down. The players are too good to be playing that way and they’re not used to it at their clubs. He also sacrificed formation and tactics by insisting on using players not suited to it. Too many out of position getting in each other’s way and relying on individual moments and luck to win games.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Two recent appearances in the final of the European Championship is pretty good going compared to how England have faired in the past with the previous "golden generation". Yes and no. He did get the team to semi’s and finals, but he’s he’s always been very lucky with the draws avoiding big teams and losing when he did. His tactics and reliance on moments and sheer luck to win games was always doomed to fail. You can’t beat teams like Spain without a proper plan of attack. He was preparing for pens when Spain scored their second goal.

When you compare the teams Spain played to get to the final compared to England you have to say he’s at least been a very lucky coach in virtually every tournament where he’s managed to get the team to the latter stages, always somehow managing to avoid the big teams then losing when he did.

Thanks for the memories, Southgate. Didnt have to take on that mess after the Allardyce fiasco but did and turned it around. Took the team as far as he could and has stepped down at the right time. I think a role with the FA would suit him. He's done a lot behind the scene to get the set up in such a good place.
