I just shot my first LPV in the 430W. I was really surprised at the situational awareness and the capability of the GPS. Thanks for this additional information, I'm sure I'll be using it my next flight.

I was on a practice flight Friday and wanted to know exactly how to do what you show in this video. Thanks so much for posting this. On my next flight I will give this a try.

Nice Tips. To avoid the GPS miscalculating the fuel on the last tip, you could just use the nearest airport from direct to, and select the departure airport in an emergency.

Thanks. This helps as this thing has some nuances and can be frustrating if something happens on the fly.

Well done. As a subscriber to your magazine I am always looking to learn more. The OBS function is one that not many pilots know about or use on the 430/530, would nice to have a video on that.

If your departure airport is first in the FPL, then scrolling to it, hitting direct-enter-enter will make it the active waypoint even though your just left it. Once it is active, hit the PROC button to pull up procedures for your departure airport. I do all round robin training flights this way.

Excellent! BTW "Activate Leg" can also be done by hitting [Direct] twice and [ENT] to execute it.

Great, very informative video! I will second @Ellexis77, though: the difference in audio levels in a couple of places was really a problem for me watching on the iPhone with headphones -- had to turn the sound way up, then got my ears blown out at the end.

Another method on making sure the aircraft continues to the next fix when in the hold is to move the curser to ‘hold’ on the FPL and hit the ‘clear’ key and erase it.

Hello. Nice tips. Is there a way on a Garmin 430 to capture and record flight data for use later? Sim card or something?
@GTthebusiness8 жыл бұрын
in the event of an emergency on departure, to get back to your destination,n couldn't you just use the direct to function, then pull up procedures, instead of putting your departure airport at the end of the flight plan?
@OldBoatDriver14 жыл бұрын
More than one way to skin a cat obviously, but this is a good tutorial. I'd like to see more of these from IFR/AvWeb. For a guy like me who flies airline FMS most of the time and the Garmin 430 only 40hrs/year, this is great!
@snakeater19764 жыл бұрын
To intercept the "Leg" you can also highlight LoYER and press Direct, Direct, Enter and it will also intercept :Leg".
@Bartonovich523 жыл бұрын
Won’t that just fly direct to LOYER? That isn’t what you want to do. You want to intercept the leg not fly direct to a fix. In an FMS this is so much easier. Line select the waypoint you want and put it in the active waypoint for a direct. Or select the first waypoint of the leg you want to intercept and put it in the from waypoint.

How to create a hold in the GPS?And how do I change the inbound course or track?
@MrPhFischer7 жыл бұрын
Hi. My GNS400 doesn't show me the dashed line between legs to turn before. So, the aircraft goes to the waypoint and just after that it turn to the next waypoint, losing the axis. Is that a way to active this dashed line?

is there a trick in the Gramin 430 to create a hold when its not a published hold?
@jbskies14 жыл бұрын
@robertklein2001 Hit [Direct] [Direct] [ENT] is the same as [Menu] then select "Acitve Leg" [ENT]. As you said, it is different from the [Direct] [ENT], which go direct to the next way point.

Direct LOYER direct again does the same thing as Activate Leg

To load an approach to an airport NOT at the end of your flight plan; would it be wrong to touch ‘PROC’, then activate a cursor, then scroll to the identifier and spell your airport identifier? Wouldn’t that accomplish the same thing?
@BeechSundowner14 жыл бұрын
As with anything with life, 500 paths to end with the same result. For the last tip, I probably would just hit direct, key in the airport code and enter, and load the approach as normal. No need to keep the original plan since you are returning from the departure airport anyway.

Nice tips. My trainer has this system but my CFS will not let me use it! He insist that it is all done manually with paper and pen. This is where I disagree with him. These navigation aids are made to make the pilot work load much more efficient and accurate. But he says that pencils never run out of batteries and charts don't break when you drop them like the iPad will. I suppose that is true, but calculating a holding pattern is time consuming and tedious. Pressing a few keys on the ol' Garmin is much simpler.

+Täking Thë High Roäd Then I'd get a new flight instructor. I agree that becoming too dependent on the GPS is foolish, but so is not using it at all.
@charliefoxtrotthe3rd3358 жыл бұрын
gevmage I can use it, but not for testing purposes. Yesterday we lost three fuses in the dash and the damn thing went out. He looked at me with that smug "I told you so" look and I am kinda glad I did know how to use a paper chart! We lost all lighting as well. It was still light out, but still scary too!

Really great tips here. But alas, nothing goes together like Avweb and bad audio production. The instructional voice-over is about half the volume of the intro. Their podcasts are usually worse! At least the price is right.... :)

No doubt Jeff knows what he is talking about but this video is more likely to make a new user feel dumb and unlikely to learn anything except utter confusion. If this is some kind of advert, it leaves AvWeb looking pretty useless. This video fails to show how to initialize, or how to set up your Garmin Simulator to be the same as the video. Then there is no clear aim or objective of what the video is about, or any clear guidance along the video. It rambles, and leaves a new user totally confused. Jeff needs to pull this one down and start afresh.
@billsheehy256410 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. In an emergency situation where you need to immediately return to the airport, you should be concentrating on actually flying the airplane, not scrolling and pushing buttons. This would be great if you have a qualified co-pilot sitting next to you. I have flown for over 40 years without one of these, and I am still alive and still flying.
@gevmage8 жыл бұрын
This video is not for beginners with the Garmin 430. There are other videos for that. This video shows the fastest way through a couple of common but easily-confusing paths in the 430 software. The assumption of this video is that you use the 430 frequently already. And if you're in the clouds and something goes wrong, yes, fly the airplane first, but if you're using the 430 for primary guidance, this video is about some of the ways of doing this quickly and in such a way you only have to do them once, so you can concentrate on other things.
@8literbeater5 жыл бұрын
I guess it's too much to ask that it should go without saying that a video showing tricks and secrets is not for a BEGINNER!
