Great review. Garmin is definitely on my list, but my dilemma is they currently do not make a super capacitor version of the camera. I live in Phoenix and it is a hazard to have a battery operated dash cam in the car during the summer, especially if the battery is lithium chemistry. It is much safer to use super capacitor dash cams here since in the interior of the car can reach 160F+. I've had cases with laptop battery swelling up just by leaving in the car for 9 hours because I forgot it bring it into office one day.

I live in Texas where it can also get pretty hot and have only ever had a problem with dash cams where the entire camera body mounts directly to the surface of the glass (as opposed to a mount that attaches to the glass). That said, the quality association that comes with Garmin (who has decades of experience making devices that can withstand extreme heat) is also why I went with them. So far, so good! That said, you can also go with the Mini2 which doesn’t have a battery at all and can use the OBD2 adapter instead!

Great Video! I would say based on your sample side by side or Top / Down video of both Cams, the 47 doesn't seem to be missing out on much at all..Meaning the 140 vs 180 really aren't that different per your samples. The best test was at the intersection but even then when you driving and approaching (Street corners, Intersections, Passing Cars, or still on the Hwy) traffic you're talking miliseconds of a difference in view. Therefore, for me I think the 47 would be best and and less fiddling with resolutions etc.

I have three Garmin 45's (older model) in my Fit (forward, reverse, interior). I love the magnetic mount. They're over 5 years old now without problems, although I don't drive much. 8000 miles total. I also have one Garmin 57 (forward) and two Garmin 47's (reverse, interior) in my Civic. These newer ones don't give you the option to keep recording (30s, 1min) after power is cut off. But Garmin did abandon the "we'll only charge if using our cables" nonsense in this generation. On the 45's, I had to make special micro-USB connectors with a resistor in them to mimic Garmin cables.

Hi, thank you for your review!🙂👍 To me it looks as if you can't see license plates and street signs that are a little further away so well on the 67W. Especially at night. But that could also be due to the compression of the video.
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Both are true; you can definitely see more clearly in the raw video (I had to export the video at one resolution and of course KZbin compresses it), but the 67W is also designed to capture a wider field of view at the sacrifice of some of the finer details. If a vehicle were to hit you, however, they would be close enough to be able to read their plate. That said, if someone is doing something far away from you I don’t think anyone has any business reading their plate.

The tandem has an interior cam which is slightly different than a rear cam that looks out the back window. Personally I always back into spaces so for me I don’t feel like I need a rear facing cam but some folks won’t drive without them. It’s all personal preference. Rear facing cameras can be hard to install and wire up, though. Especially if you have a vehicle with a lift gate that doesn’t have a power socket in the back.

@joshjamescars9 күн бұрын
All the cameras can record continuously if connected to the OBD2 adapter and if it’s set to constantly record. In essence, whenever there is power supplied to the unit it will be on and recording. And yes, the camera fills up the memory card and when it is full, it automatically deletes the oldest clips first to make space for new recordings. So how long your footage is available on the card depends on how much capacity the card has. I recommend at least 128GB.

Josh, as others have said this was a great informative video. I have been searching for something more discreet so these choices are great. I also like the magnet mount. Josh, with the Mini 2 with OBD Constant Cable you can set the amount of time you want it to record when parked. So you can turn it OFF if the car is in your garage, or switch it to record for 12 or 24 hours. There's a little slider on the side of the camera for this purpose, I believe.
@joshjamescars11 ай бұрын
Yes but the problem with that is it won’t respond to a bump in a parking lot beyond that set timeframe like every other dash cam out there will which is what I want. So, if your car gets hit and the camera isn’t powered, you’re out of luck to get any kind of info.
@juliava60511 ай бұрын
But it's not going to get bumped in your garage, right? So you turn it off. Now if you are parked elsewhere and want it turned on, you simply flip the little switch. Am I misunderstanding? No but that’s an incredible hassle to have to do every single time. Do you want to be reaching under your dashboard every single time you park your car in public? I wouldn’t. @@joshjamescarsthanks for the reply. My original question isn't very realistic. I imagine it would pick up at least 1 incident (bump / hit) in a couple hour time span? Thank you for the response.

Thank you for the review! One question: To use parking guard/mode, constant power cable is required anyway, right? Even with a battery, 47/67W can only last 30 minutes. As a result, mini2 and 47/67w should be the same in terms of parking mode?
@joshjamescars4 ай бұрын
If you want the camera to record the entire time you’re parked then yes, you will want the constant power cable. However, the idea with parking guard on the 47 and 67 is that it can wake up if it detects a bump, record for a minute to capture the event, and then turn off again without drawing any power from your car’s 12 volt battery the way the constant power cable does. That’s the big benefit of the internal battery.

Also made it impossible to use any kind of sunshade! It felt to me like they took one of their (admittedly great) home security cameras and put it in what they thought would be a great housing for a car. And yes I can definitely do a video on that, though I think it will be quicker to look up “how to dress dash cam wire” or something to that effect and I’m sure a bunch of great videos will come up showing the best ways to “dress” the cable once you have the camera in a spot that you like. Cheers!

I don’t think that’s hugely useful unless you’re a ride share driver and want it for liability purposes. I also don’t want a camera watching every second of me in the car. Any comment on how it stays powered on? How often do you need to charge it or do you hide the cables and plug it in all the time?
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Most dash cams need to be wired all the time. The batteries in them are only there to power them for a few minutes here and there for incident detection while parked. So yes you use the included cable and run it to either a USB port or the OBD2 port in the car and then dress it nicely.

How does the Mini 2 differ from the 47 when using Parking Guard? You mention that the Mini 2 is CONSTANTLY recording. Does the 47 not constantly record when hooked up with the OBDII Constant Power Cable like the Mini 2 does? If I'm interpreting Garmin's manual correctly, the Mini 2 and 47 operate the same with Parking Mode with the only exception in that the 47 has an internal battery so it can record up to 30 minutes without the need to hardwire to the vehicle through the fuse box or OBDII port.
@joshjamescars4 ай бұрын
The mini2 requires the constant power cable to record when the car is turned off, period. So if you don’t use the constant power adapter, it won’t record anything once you turn off the car. The 47 will record even when the car is off because it has an internal battery.
@joker21004 ай бұрын
@@joshjamescars I understand. Your review implies that the Mini 2 constantly records without impact to the vehicle. Garmin's manual and video demonstrations state that the Parking Guard only records when there is movement of the dash cam, which contradicts your experience with the Mini 2. It is implied from your video that the 47 doesn't share this same issue. I'm not sure why your Mini 2 was constantly recording throughout the night in your garage unless something was banging on the vehicle constantly. Did you have the same experience then with the 47?
@joshjamescars4 ай бұрын
@joker2100 I think you misunderstood what I was saying. As I said in the video, the Mini2 does NOT have an internal battery or a gyro. So it cannot detect bumps. The Mini2 is either on or off. It cannot “wake up” like the 47 can because there’s no internal battery. So the reason it was constantly recording the back of my garage door is because that’s how it works. It’s on or it’s off. Period.
@joker21004 ай бұрын
@@joshjamescars Thanks for the clarification. I don't think I misunderstood. There wasn't enough details into why it was recording all throughout the night in your explanation in the video. Either way, I appreciate your extended explanation.

Thanks for the review! I wish you had spoken about the WiFi capabilities. It seems like their documentation focuses on having the WiFi all the time but what I wanted to have was a camera that when I returned home and parked that would then connect to the WiFi and upload all the footage from that day. Do these cameras do that? Have you tried that? Or do you have WiFi in your cars that it uses? I can't imagine that even the WiFi cars have it working when it's off and parked, that seems like a recipe for disaster (gives someone plenty of time to break into your WiFi and potentially screw with your car). Thoughts? I also read that the footage is stored in one minute videos on the SD card. I assume that means that to create your vide at the end you had to load at least 10 different videos? Is that why there are breaks in the video, because after recording for a minute you had to restart the recording for another minute? That would make it impossible to get an unbroken 10-minute video then?
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! I didn’t speak about WiFi because these cameras don’t fully do what you’re talking about there. The WiFi is mainly used for connecting to the camera and pulling clips down from it should you get pulled over or something like that. You might want to look into the one that has a 4G data modem built in (also requiring a subscription fee) for a truly cloud based dash cam. I’ve never personally felt the need to have all my dash cam clips in the cloud though, as I can just go down to the garage and pull the SD card out of the camera. Way, way faster to do that. As for the clips, all dash cams save footage in one to two minute clips. It’s how they manage storage on the SD card. They’ll constantly record and when the card is getting full they’ll automatically delete the oldest clips. And the video at the end was broken up into different pieces because it was from two different 30 minute drives and I didn’t think anyone wanted to sit through an hour of video LOL. So I edited it to show just certain parts of each.

Good video. But I have one complaint. You pointed out how Garmin was being disingenuous by saying the 67 can do 1440p and 60hz, but then seconds later your chart says the same thing! I think it's fair to say that most people will pick the higher resolution over 60fps (otherwise just get the 57). So the chart should say that the 67 is 1440p and 30fps. Perhaps you could add a note that the 67 can do 1080p and 60hz. I think your chart now implies that the 67 is "BEST" based on the same lie Garmin was telling.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
What I said in the video is that the “67W can do 1440p and 60fps (not 60hz, by the way), but not at the same time.” also, the 67 has benefits beyond that, for exams it has a 180-degree field of view versus the 47 and 57 that have a 140-degree FOV. And for me, that is a big benefit because it allows you a MUCH wider view at intersections and while parked.
